Thanks for all the information, the places which i told you are where abouts they would be. I'm trying to find his parents now. Samuel Garnett - He was in WWI.

The Arthur GARNETT who appears in the censuses as the father of a Harry Samuel GARNETT of the right age (born Islington, not Hunstanton) did marry a GREEN first time around. Arthur was born in the Rugby area, his birth registered there in the Jun qtr of 1857.
Marriage, Jun qtr 1880
Arthur GARNETT
Mary Jane GREEN
Medway 2a 730
NB Arthur was in Linslade, Bucks (might this be where you get "Lindsdale" from?) with his mother Harriott in 1871: RG10/1560/32/11.
(He'd have been a bit old for WW1 - perhaps that was the next generation?)
-
why do you think his father is samuel? have you seen the marriage cert?
Eng births & Baps has:
Harry Samuel Garnett bap 16/7/1882 Burnham Ovary,Norfolk
s/o Arthur & Mary Jane garnett
Burnham Ovary very close to Hunstanton...

Looks like the right one - maybe not stayed too long in Hunstanton - maybe christened in Islington.

i've been told by the grandson of Harry Garnett that his father is Samuel Garnett. I've come accross that birth aswell from familysearch.org
-
matbe he was Arthur Samuel...
was the LDS one submitted or extracted?

It actually looks as though his birth was registered in Islington (in Dec qtr 1881) and, from your finding, that he was baptised in Norfolk.
-
right, that makes sense.
could send for marriage cert harry = Ellen - should confirm father.
Arthur Garnett bap 12/7/1857 Rugby
s/o Henry & Harriet Garnett
Diddy

how much are marriage certificates?
-
just looked at the 1901 cenus with Arthur as father - occupation compositor - same as Harry on the 1911!!
Diddy
-
worth posting a look up on the London board first - someone might check it for you.
Diddy

It seems to have been Harry Samuel GARNETT, rather than his father, who served in WW1.
Harry's military records show that his next of kin was his wife, Ellen, of 1 Paradise Place, Scoles Green, Norwich. His children were named as Ivy, E___? and Millie. A daughter was also registered to this couple in Norwich in 1916 (see FreeBMD).

Okay great, i just need to get the marriage cert to confirm parents.

Does anyone know if the Bertram Garnett listed as age 5 in the 1901 census moved to Doncaster in later life. Bertram was the name of my grandfather, who died in the 1960s, and would have been about that age. I also had an auntie Ethel.
Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat, Graham.
What was your Bertram’s birth date and mother’s name and maiden name?
Here is the family on the 1911 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWF8-LPR
They have an additional two daughters.

Hi jamjar
sorry, but I don't have much information available. My aunt Margaret (Bertram's daughter) did some research into our family history, but I haven't got that information available. I just know that Bertram came from London (East End?). My great-aunt Ethel lived in Ilford for many years, and I still have relatives in London. The ages seem to match what little information I know.
Thanks for the reply anyway.

Hi Graham,
There seems to be only these two births recorded for Bertram Garnett's:
Births Mar 1896
Garnett Bertram mother's maiden name Cloiser W. Ham 4a 322 This one is the one shown in the 1901census aged 5
Births Sep 1914
GARNETT Bertram mother's maiden name Cowton Bradford 9b 150
and these two marriages:
Marriages Sep 1922
GARNETT Bertram Fox Doncaster 9c 1699
Marriages Jun 1943
Garnett Bertram Vincent Bradford 9b 70
and these two deaths:
Garnett Bertram born c1897 died1962 England & Wales Deaths 1837-2007 Doncaster, Yorkshire, Your grandfather?
Garnett Bertram born c1914 died 1986 England & Wales Deaths 1837-2007 Keighley, Yorkshire,
so it looks very much like your grandfather was the one born 1896 who moved to Doncaster and married there in 1922.

Hi Chris
thanks very much for the information. Yes, my grandmother's maiden name was Fox, and 1962 sounds about right for Bert's death. My father was born in 1924, the eldest of Bert's 3 children, so again the dates seem right.
Again, many thanks.
Graham
