Post by: canal woman on Sunday 27 February 11 14:16 GMT (UK)

 Please can anyone help me?

I am looking for   Sarah and Joseph TURTON in the 1841 census   and their children
John 11/12 --- William 9---Mary 5/6---Thomas 4.
I feel sure they ought to be in the Wolverhampton / Tettenhall areas ...........

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume from your heading that Josephs occupation was a boatman

Do you know where any of the family were born  ??? that would help

Why do you think that ???, with that occupation they would have moved around a lot .

Hello.

Yes, you assume correctly.
The first indication that Joseph was a Boatman was on his sons baptismal entry in Tettenhall Parish Church in 1831.
and from then onwards he and his Family always gave their occupation as Boatmen .........
They moved about a lot  Mitton, Tipton, Worsley and Tettenhall. [although to settle is not really what they did  , they sort of holed up for ???? the night/day  and then carried on moving.]

I have them as a family on the 1851 Census in Tipton,  but have not found them there in 1841...so wondered if they were in the Wolverhampton area.

sallie

Hi,
Looked hard but they are being very elusive.
The nearest i ve come is
1841 HO107/998  17/8  8
Compton, Tettenhall
Thomas Turton 5
Mary Turton      1
Elizabeth Cartwright  20
Possibly others in household
If ages were confused? I see you have Cartwright  in your surname interests. There are several Boatmen living as neighbours.
Also but not holding out much hope!
1841, Water Row, Wolverhampton.
Ho107/1001  1/24  17
Joseph and Sarah Churton and family but his occupation is Lab.

Hello Again.............

Thankyou so much for replying to me and showing so much interest..................greatly appreciated.............

 Sarah was Sarah Cartwright....................
 Joseph  is just Joseph Turton.

Their Children until the 1841 census were

  John                     Worsley           1829
  William                Tettenhall        1831
 Joseph                 Tettenhall        1833
  Mary                      Tettenhall         1835

  Thomas              Mitton                 183???

The Churton bit is not suprising as Turton is often miss spelt and can cause problems..........

Joseph and Sarah Churton and family but his occupation is Lab.

This one is a real quandary, they have a 15 years old Hannah with them but Joseph and Sarah were not married until 1829  but as no relationships are given she is not necessarily their daughter, John fits with the right birth date and Joseph 8 may have died.... all possibilites but cant prove any.

Tried searching them using just christian names but as not POB is listed in 1841 it like looking for a needle in a haystack  :(

ThanKyou so much for spending your sunday afternoon looking for them.
Sarah and Joseph were married in 1829 you were right,
and they spent about 20 years having babies.
I have the later years of their life but it is the earlier years I am missing hence this 1841 bussines.
I think that a visit to Wolverhampton Archives is now in order.

It is so difficult when you are looking on the canals.. they could be just anywhere!
Thankyou again ................

sallie

No problem  :)

I did notice however that in 1851 Joseph's occupation is listed as Publican, his sons were down a captian of a boat  and boatman

Just thanks.

They were Boatmen from the beginning until my Grandfather , who had a coal Wharf... all very uncivilised!! and then they became Publicans.

I will continue in my search for the early famillies............ just thanks for your help.

It's possible they were moored out of enumerators reach in 1841. Well that's what I'm thinking about my Whitehouses.!!

Hi...
Think that I could agree with you on that one.

Parrish spent  her valuable time yesterday afternoon looking for my Turton family and was not very successful.[it must have been so so frustrating]
She found 2 children  but the others of the family were not forthcoming................... very difficult.
I know they were on the canals but WHERE...[speak to me !! wave your hand and stop hiding!!!]   maybe they are with your Whitehouses!!

Re the Turtons.  I have John Turton on my family tree.  Married Harriet Webley or Webberley 15/11/1868 at Wolverhampton, Harriet being the sister of my GGrandfather's second wife Eliza Lunt nee Webley.

How wonderful, I am so pleased.
I have spent all winter and the last 20 years looking for the family of John Turton.
Harriet married William Turton, who was the son of John.

they had many many children but as far as I can find out only 2 survived and married, a son called Richard and a daughter Ellen.

If you would like to share any more of the family with me, I would happily share my knowledge with you.

Glad to help Sallie.  Send me a personal message, and we can swap data.  Would love to know more about the Turtons, and I know someone else who also connects who would like to know too.
Also have more data on the Webleys, who connect in to a lot more canal families.
It's great when this happens out of the blue!!!!!

Need to make a correction anyway for those reading this thread in the future,  Had a bit of a rush of blood to the head when I read these posts!  It was John Turton's son William who married Harriet Webley!  Sorry folks.

Thank you so much for the information.  As I used to live in Wolverhampton I have been in possession of this  for years now, used to use the old record office when it was in W'ton  libruary.
I think I am now at the stage of hoping for unseen information, wherever that might be.
Quite by accident i have found that the Turtons used to live in Barnton Cheshire, this is amazing and I am following that line with great interest. also a number of then lived in Middlewich Cheshire.

Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone had found or knows how to find information on Sarah Cartwright (who married Joseph Turton in 1829 in Wolverhampton). I may be related to Sarah and looking for information on her family.
Thank you!

Hello Cimbrio.
My 3x great grandmother was Sarah Cartwright.
she married Joseph  in 1829 and they had a considerable number of children.
John Born 1829 is my line .
She came from Wombourne in Staffordshire and her family are entered into the Parish registers of St Benedict Wombourne.
