Title: White / Haines of Clare
Post by: Jessies Mum on Monday 28 February 11 20:01 GMT (UK)
Hope someone may be able to assist.

I am attempting to trace my 2x great grandmother who according to her marriage certificate was born in Clare, Ireland.

She was Elizabeth (or Eliza) Marie White, born circa 1854 to parents Francis White and possibly Michelle Haines.  Not completely sure on her mother's name as the certificate is just a little difficult to read on that spot.

At some point though, she has left Ireland and in 1874 (age 20) married my 2x great grandfather in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

ANY information would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks. :)

Clare is one of the more difficult counties to research due to the fact that the BDM records aren't readily available online. Civil registration didn't start until 1864 (1845 non-catholic marriages).

Have a look at the links in the Clare Resources forum & particularly www.clarelibrary.ie.

In Griffiths Valuation taken mid 1800s there is a Francis White & a Frank White both living in Ruan Common in Corrofin. They are freeholders.
I'm not sure that Michelle is a name that an Irish woman would have had in the 1800s. The surname Haines isn't in either the Tithe Applotments or Griffiths so hard to tell whereabouts she came from. Perhaps if you could scan in & post up the portion of the cert with her name somebody might be able to decipher it?
