Oldcourt is a townland of about 870 acres, and is located about 4km east of the town of Blessington. The townland is shown on the 1st edition 6" OSI maps - see Oldcourt, Co. Wicklow (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,701724,714913,5,7)
Do you know what religion your Merrigan family were ?
see : Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)
The townlands of Ballyknockan and Blackditches (upper & lower) are just over 12km to the south of Blessington

Hi
Thank you for the info and they were Catholic
-
RC records for the parish of Blessington, which includes Oldcourt, only go back to the early 1820s and the NLI films only go back to about 1852.
I'm not sure when the parish was founded, but I'll see if I can find out..

RC Records for the neighbouring parish of Blackditches, which includes Blackditches Upper and Lower and Ballyknockan (Civil parish of Boystown) go back to 1810, and may include earlier records for Blessington.
You can see a map of the RC parishes, details of the dates available and locations of records on the Irish Times Website - see : RC Parishes (http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/wicklowrc.htm)
I'm not absolutely certain but I think the parish of Blackditches may sometimes be called Valleymount after a village in the parish where the church is located - see : Valleymount (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,698794,707418,5,3) (OSI Map)

Hi Shane
The info l have on John MERRIGAN and wife Mary came from M Merrigan who lives in Ireland and has a very large data base on the MERRIGANS from all over the world and l would think that l may not get back any further then 1800's on my Merrigan side of the family but one thing l don't have is John and Marys death info so if you can help with that l would be most grateful

any idea when their deaths might have been - did they die in or near Blessington / Blackditches ?
If they died after the start of civil registration (1864) then they should appear on the Civil BMD Index.

I had a quick look at the index for death registrations in the area (district of Naas covers Blessington, Baltinglass covers Blackditches) and didnt see anything promising for John's death. There is maybe one possibility for Mary's death ...
Name: Mary Merigan
Registration district: Naas
event type: Death
Quarter/Year: Oct - Dec 1893
Age : 82 (est. year of birth 1811)
Volume : 2 / Page : 641

I am at a lost and have NO idea of when they died their last child was born around 1840 l think
but l do know that they had a daughter Margaret Merrigan who married a John WHITE/WHYTE and they lived in Ballyknockan so l am thinking they may have moved near her

just a word of warning about death certs ... they dont contain all that much detail.
see : Details included on a Death Cert (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433043.0.html)
Other than the name of the deceased (married name only for women), the only real clues can be the place of death, often just the name of a townland, and maybe the informant name - which can sometimes be family member
Shane

Hi Shane this is the nearest l have got to finding them in over ten years so l have to check and hopefully this may have more info and it may list one of the children as the informant
Do you know if there is a prepaid site that l can view the record on

You need to order a cert from the GRO to see the details.
see : Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433040.0.html)

Hello ~
My father just found these posts after I announced I was finished with out "Merrigan" branch. I've been doing research on this branch for roughly about 30+ years. I have lots of info and connections. Plus still always looking to connect with others with reliable information. So this is the info I have at the moment re: John Merrigan , and yes you're right going further back will take an act of congress or to find an old family bible ~ Hopefully this helps :)
John Merrigan b. abt 1793 Blessington, Wicklow, Ireland / d. abt 1875 Bolton, Lancashire, England
m. Mary Lynch ~ b. 1795 Co. Wicklow, Ireland / d. New Ross, Waterford, Ireland ~ She was previously married to a gentlemen by the last name of RILEY.
children:
Bridget Merrigan
Eliza Merrigan
Margaret Merrigan
Thomas Merrigan
John Merrigan b. 1817
James Merrigan b. 1821
I'm confirming some other information but now that I've found your posts I'll be able to reconnect once that information becomes available.
Nice meeting new relations. Welcome aboard!

I have an ancestor John Merrigan b. 1793 he married Mary Lynch. I believe they were both from Old Court Blessington Ireland. What I'm looking for, cause I can't seem to find anything connecting them, is info on Mary Lynch. I don't know if this is her maiden name or if she was married to a "Lynch". She was previously married to a "Riley"...but I can't seem to find anything on John and Mary together and what their history was. Can anyone help me?
Thank you

What denomination were your Merrigan / Lynch family ?
Due to the early date you would need to check for parish record for this family, so the first step is to check what records and dates are actually available, and if any of these are currently online.

Shane ~
I'm sorry I am just now seeing you responded to my post.
To answer your question John Merrigan was from Old Court, Blessington, Ireland
There is more info on the following post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,517926.msg3734385.html#msg3734385
still trying to confirm some information. I've been told that Mary was actually born "Cronin" and when her mother remarried to "Lynch" she took on his last name.
Any other assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your time and efforts.

I think it may be mentioned in the other post - your dates are well before the start of the RC parish records for the area. Average starting date for rural RC records in about 1830.
Baptisms for some of their children and also a (2nd?) marriage are probably in available records - think a marriage date was given earlier.
-
The index on RootsIreland is showing a possible John Merrigan marriage, in 1826.. doesn't seem to be in Blessington RC parish, or to someone named Lynch or Cronin (or Sullivan). Unfortunately early parish records give very little detail - so all that marriage is likely to show is the date and the names of the bride and groom, possibly also names of witnesses.
edit : figured out the parish for that marriage - Wicklow town, RC - so over the mountains and about 50km to the east of Blessington.

Hello Again ~
After researching the many branches of the Merrigan family (mine specifically) I keep coming up with other information that seems to cross this particular line. So I came up with a theory and decided to revisit this post to see if anymore clues might answer my question. It seems there may be some truth to my theory regarding Mr. John Merrigan of Blessington...My theory is that Mr. John Merrigan had a second marriage (don't know if it's before or after marrying Lynch) but it appears he is one in the same and his other marriage was to a Eleanor Byrne. It appears that they married in 1808 maybe in Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, Ireland.
Is there any way to verify this (which would connect a great many dots for a bunch of us who have the same people in their trees but can't make the connection) as well as confirm a second marriage?
Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again
Tara

I was off on the information on the above post. Please delete this post regarding the additional marriage. Eleanor Byrne was actually his mother. Thank you.
