Title: Robert MILLARD - 1789 - London
Post by: Jessies Mum on Monday 07 March 11 20:14 GMT (UK)
Hello,

Am tracing my husband's family tree line - have his 3x great grandfather Robert born in London in 1789 and marrying Martha Button in 1812.

I think but am not certain that his father was Joseph and mother Hannah Alder?  I do not have dates of birth or death or marriage for either of these two or whereabouts they may be in England.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

Where did Robert's marriage and death take place in London?

The IGI has his marriage in Somerset admitted the entry is submitted by a church member so should be treated with caution. The IGI has very poor coverage in general of Somerset parish registers.

ROBERT MILLARD
MARTHA BUTTON
Marriage:  11 AUG 1812   Mells, Somerset

A possible for the family on censuses

1841 census HO107 948/7 folio 64
Church Lane Kilmersdon Somerset
Robert Millard 50 Carpenter
Martha Millard 45
Lucetta Millard 15
Samuel Millard 15
Edwin Millard 12
Frederick Millard 10
John Millard
Ann Catley 15 F S (Female Servant)
all born in county
Adult ages, those over 15, are usually rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census

1851 census HO107 1932 folio 892
Coleford Hamlet Kilmersdon Somerset
Martha Millard 58 Head Widow Tea Dealer Grocer Kilmersdon Somerset
Edwin Millard 22 Son Carpenter Kilmersdon Somerset
John Millard 18 Son Balcksmith Kilmersdon Somerset

If it is this family Kilmersdon and London are over a 100 miles apart. Kilmersdon and Mells Somerset are about 4 miles apart.

Regards

Valda

Hello Valda,

Uncertain about Robert's birthplace - just have "at London" provided.  Certainly have their marriage at Mells, Somerset - so cannot be certain about the birthplace whatsoever.

The family in the census rings true with some of the younger children.

Hi

Though the 1841 census born in county question can be unreliable, so far this is the only record you have. On it Robert states he was born in county, which in this case was Somerset.

Do you wish me to move your topic to the Somerset board?

Hi Jessies Mum,

Full record of the marriage entry confirming Robert was of this parish  at the time of marriage (though no guarantee he was born there). Unfortunately no MILLARD witnesses to help.

http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Marriages&RecordID=609004

Children's baptisms also available

http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/Search.pl

The marriage of Joseph MILLARD and Hannah ALDER was in Shepton Mallet

http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Marriages&RecordID=616583

There are a couple of baptisms listed (no Robert) and others to Joseph and Jane with a possible second marriage in 1782 (status not listed so can't be sure it is the same Joseph.) A burial in 1780 also listed on FreeReg for a possible Hannah - no age provided. I this is Josephs wife then Robert could not have been born to this couple between 1787 and 1790

Cheers Kris  :)

Just taking another look and it may be worth noting that also in Kilmersdon is a Richard MILLARD according to the census born 1793-1796. He is born in Batcombe and  is also a Carpenter. There is a Thomas in Batcombe in  the same age group also a carpenter. Some older MILLARDS also (not all are carpenters)

A few marriages   . I note the name Ann EDNY since the Richard in Kilmersdon seems to listed (submitted entries) on the IGI as Richard Enedy MILLARD.

John MILLARD of Batcombe = Jane JACKLET of Batcombe 12 Apr 1789 Batcombe with Upton Noble
James MILLARD of Batcombe = Mary GERRARD widow of Batcombe by licence 17 Apr 1792 Batcombe with Upton Noble
Thomas MILLARD of Batcombe = Hannah GILES of Batcombe 27 Apr 1789 Batcombe with Upton Noble
William MILLARD of Batcombe = Ann EDNY of Batcombe 25 Mar 1788 Batcombe with Upton Noble Possibly listed as aged 75 and Ind in Batcombe in 1841 Ann buried 12 Nov 1844 Batcombe aged 82 - now there was a William buried in Kilmersdon 14 Apr 1846 aged 84. He is not in Kilmersdon in 1841 so looks like he may have moved in with son after Ann's death. Going by those IGI entries I suspect this couple are very likely to be Richards parents but are they also Roberts?

I suggest you take a look at Batcombe PR's.

Cheers Kris  :)

Have just discovered that Robert had a brother - Richard, born 1795.  Does this assist?

Just wondering if there is anything new out there on this family - maybe if I trace Richard Enedy Millard it may bring me in line with Robert possibly.  I have it that Richard may have married Mary - no surname.  Anyone help me shed any light?
