Post by: Sharon01 on Saturday 12 March 11 20:20 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I have come across the surname  Le Juge De Segrais in my family tree, does anyone have any idea where it originates from. I can not post details as person may still be living.

Also not sure if posted on correct board, please move if necessary.

Thanks

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Did a quick search on Google and there's lots of info on this name - mainly in French so I'd hazard a guess that France is the origin. Most of the items have a translation facility alongside them.

Also found this item if it's of interest - there is a mention of a GHISLAINE LE JUGE DE SEGRAIS

Have you found any more about your Le Juge de Segrais family. I was researching the name also, there was a family in mauritius., I was hoping for more information too. Aimee Amanda married Henry Ritter in 1828 in Mauritius. And my Gt Gt grandfather referred to Henry Ritter as his uncle.

Hi,

No, I have not really looked into it. My great aunt was married to someone of this name and think must have got divorced as she remarried.

Thanks for that,  I have seen the tree before, and it gas nothing new.  I am really trying to get more about Mr Ritter, and the sister of aimee amanda. So far I can not link Henry Theodore Simon to george henry Ritter. Must see if there is someone in Mauritius who can try the archives there.
But thanks anyway

Hello! I’m very late to this chat, but Sharon01 I think your great aunt might be my grandmother who died back in 1994.
By chance I’ve been doing a little bit of research over the weekend and found this link so thought I would reply.
I share some names with you: Salkeld (my great grandmothers maiden name), Stewart (my great grandfathers name - my grandmothers maiden name). I do not know Fagan’s but i’ve heard my dad speak about them. He had cousins in London with that surname.
My grandmother married Le Juge de Segrais we believe after WW2. Apparently as the story goes they were divorced within a year. My grandmothers marriage certificate to my grandfather says her marriage to le juge de segrais was dissolved but she signs her name le juge de segrais on the marriage certificate when she married my grandfather.
This was all kept a secret from my father - I guess the divorce must have hurt her and been humiliating for her. For those times and for working class folk I think getting divorced was quite rare.
My dad only found out from one of his aunties who had also been keeping the secret when both his mum and dad (my grandparents) died.
We can find all birth and marriage certificates of my grandparents but we cannot find the marriage certificate of my grandmother with le juge de segrais which made me wonder whether she got married abroad for her first marriage to de segrais.
My grandmothers second marriage was to a far less exotic but clearly more devoted Weaver from Bermondsey.
Hope this is helpful to you.
Good luck searching.

Hi Sharon 01
Thank you so much for your message. Unfortunately for some reason I cannot PM you back, so thought I would write here.
Thanks for sending over details of grandma’s first marriage. It has been a massive help in piecing together a missing part of the puzzle. Very difficult to get that kind of information when both grandma and grandad are deceased so thank you.
I would be very interested to know why the family travelled down from Hexham - was it just for work? Also John P Stewart, what would be our great grandfather, it seems he was living with another family as a young boy up in Hexham. Would be interesting to have some info on him too if you have it.
Very best wishes
