Title: East / Smith / Reynolds
Post by: CMBS on Monday 14 March 11 12:21 GMT (UK)
Searching for birth details and parents of my 2x great grandmother Emma East or Smith born 1856 Leicester. Emma East married Thomas Reynolds (born 1850 London) in 1875 in Wellingborough, Northampton. The 1881 census states Emma's birthplace as Thealby / Shearsby, Leicester. On the birth certificate of their 1st child Stephen Reynolds born 1877 Northampton, Emma gave her surname as Smith. Their 3rd child Maud Reynolds born 1880 Sneinton, Nottingham has Emma East as her mother. Also searching for confirmation of mothers name - Emma East or Smith - on the birth certificate of their 2nd son Thomas Reynolds born 1879 Northampton. Family info states there was a Romany Gypsy connection with Emma East /Smith. There was an uncle John Smith who was a Baptist Minister. I'll be very grateful for any info to confirm this.

Hi! Many thanks for your reply.  On the marriage cert Emma East gave her fathers name as John East (deceased) occupation Horse Dealer. Of course saying he was deceased doesn't always mean the father was actually dead!

On the 1861 census (RG9/2302) I found a John East born 1826, occup Horse Dealer living in Nether Broughton, Leicester. Unfortunately he didn't have a daughter Emma.
John East's wife Elizabeth changes her name on every census:  Senta/Senty/Lenar/Centilinca/Sentilena.  On the 1861 page following John East was a list of 38 Travelling Gypsies some called Smiths and many others their name was unknown.
John East married Elizabeth Smith in Rutland 1843. Her father Samuel Smith muscian.
Emma Reynolds née East died in 1887 in Bristol. Husband Thomas remarried Emma Laura Loviett. In the 1891 census Stepmother Emma Laura gave Thomas's childrens birthplace as Uppingham, Rutland - which isn't correct as I have some birth certs. So there must be a connection to Rutland.
You can see I've researched this family quite a bit. Sorry if this answer was a bit long winded but I continue to hope I'll find info on Emma's parents and birthplace.
Regards.

Hi. Is this Maud Reynolds the same Maud Reynolds born on 21 May 1881 in Radford, Nottinghmanshire, England?  She married Stanley McGowan on 17 November 1900.  Maud is our Great Grandmother.  We know she's Romany Gypsy and left the community when she was approximately 4 years of age, with her Father when her Mother died.   We are trying to trace her lineage.  We think her Mother was known as Gypsy Smith and came from Devon. She used to read tarot cards and tell fortunes. Thanks! Marina
