My wife and I will be visiting Leitrim in April 2011. My grandfather(John Boles) and his family were from this area. I have his Irish birth certificate. Where do I start to find where he lived-the house or any relations ??? Thank you Jim B
-
Well I presume you know their religion.
Is there an address/townland on cert?

Any g/uncles or aunts?? You know his father's name so is he here on census??....
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0c9c/
The reason I ask about townlands/address is that Manorhamilton could be where the birth was registered but they may have lived 10 miles away. Do you recognize any of the townlands (in 3rd column) in census on the cert cert?? You also should have father's occupation...
If, for example, they were Methodist then that would cut down on which church to look for etc..
You have plenty of details on the cert if you don't overlook them!!

??? Looks like I am just learning this site, I am unable to post or follow up on answers. Here are answers to the questions- Grandfather-born the 24th of September, 1890, name John Boles, father James Boles, Gortmacorkoqe?, mother Eliza Boles(Higgins), father was a farmer. Church baptism record, Killargue Roman Catholic parish. Date of baptism 28/09/1890. Thank you Jim B

Ah... you locked the thread!!
-
This looks like them on census! http://www.rootschat.com/links/0c9b/
Church website with email address; http://www.drumlease-killargue.com/
You could email them about records, graves etc.

I've unlocked the original thread and merged it with your second one to avoid duplication and confusion.

Jim,
It appears this is your family in Gortnacorkoge in both census,1901+ 1911.
There are a number of families of the same name in various townlands around the village of Drumkeerin & others a little further out in Killargue.
The family was mostly Methodist or Church of Ireland religion, but those in Gortnacorkoge & a couple of others were Roman Catholic.
On checking the Irish Telephone Directory, there is no one of the name now listed in the area.
There are some listed in the neighbouring counties of Roscommon & Sligo.
There is a Genealogy Site which covers that area & all of North Leitrim. It is Drumkeerinfolk@yahoogroups.com.
It is f.o.c. only requisite is that your ancestors come from this area.
Need to apply to join.
There are about 8 messages relating to Boles Family on the site, giving family genealogy, relationships to others etc.
Once you join they can be viewed.
Think you would be very interested.
Let me know if you have difficulty in accessing them.
Not sure if can be forwarded, could try if I had your email address
Maura.

Two in the phonebook in that area and two in Carrick on Shannon...
http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/search/residential/Leitrim/Boles.html From outside Ireland (071) 91 xxx would become 00 353 (71) 91xxx

We should be iln Manorhamiton the 13th of April. I contacted the church but they did not respond. Where should we stay in Manorhamiton? thanks Jim :)
-
But they weren't in Manorhamilton, they were in Killargue.. did you phone the one in the phonebook? (*)
Accommodation http://www.discoverireland.ie/Search-Results/List.aspx?Search=1&CategoryID=400&LocationID=10 depends on what you like..

Jim,
The current telephone directory lists only 2 Boles, households in Leitrim,1 in Killargue & 1 in Carrick on Shannon.
The latter has moved & the other ( a Boles widow of the late Jim) is recently
deceased.
As regards where you base yourself,Manorhamilton was only the Registration District & wont yield anything significant for you.
In fact you would be closer to your roots in the village of Drumkeerin.
For registration of B.D.M. the office is in Carrick on Shannon.
Any Church Records which remain ,pre 1864 are only available in the Genealogy Centre in Ballinamore.
They are no longer available from the local churches.
Cant see any accommodation locally but can enquire on your behalf.
If you wish to P.M. me in the next couple of days I will have some info.

Hi Jim,
I was wondering if you found out any information on the Boles family. I am trying to find a connection between my ancestors and yours. My grandgather, Patrick McPadden, emigrated into Canada in 1925 to stay with his cousin, John Boles (your grandfather's uncle) and his wife, Mary Comber Boles in Montreal before coming into the US. The only possible connection I can think of might be my grandfather's mother (Mary Higgins McPadden) and your grandfather's mother (Eliza Higgins Boles). I just haven't found out what that connection could be. Other than that I can't find anything that could connect Boles and McPadden. I'm trying to plan a trip over to Leitrim (hopefully this October).
Thanks,
Heather

Hello: I had a few problems with the site getting back to you. Yes we found relatives in Manorhamilton and more in the cemetery behind the Catholic church on the main road. We were shown the Higgins family home(foundation) and there was a relative living nearby which we were unable to contact. We did find Boles relatives in Manorhamilton. I used the family history center for the county for help. Jim Boles

Hi there, if you're looking for the Bowles family then they are descendant from the Carrigans and McPaddens from around Tullaghans.
-
I am descended from Boles Tullyskeherney, Manorhamilton and Difreen, (close to Glencar) and also to the Boles from Fingreagh, a few miles from Drumkeeran.
-
Just adding some information about the townlands mentioned in post #16, above.
