Title: Williams marriage
Post by: dodger123 on Wednesday 16 March 11 05:56 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Could anyone please help me find a marriage cert for my wife's 4x great grandparents - Robert Williams b abt1820 and Ann Williams (nee Rogers) b abt 1820 in Oswestry, lived in Selattyn (he is a farmer).  I have the birth cert of their son Robert Williams b 4 June 1846. We are also having issues finding them in the censuses.

Help would be much appreciated

Hi Dodger,
I may be way of here but will post this anyhow just in case we find confirmation later.
Willliams/Roberts sound Welsh to me;

Possible Marriage;
Robert WILLIAMS
Anne ROBERTS, 12 November 1833, Nevin, Caernarvon, Wales
IGI Extracted

Where did you get that Robert/Ann were born c 1820. Was that just a guess?
Robert Snr may have died post 1846 and Ann remarried and they would appear under that new name in 1851 Census.

Just a few possibilities as I cant find them in 1851 ::)

Well this one has me stumped!
Ok,
When/who/where did Robert Jnr Marry?
Have you got him on any Census?
If so when/where does it say he was born?
What doe the M/C of Robert Jnr have on it, Witnesses etc?

Trish :)

Hi, Trish

Robert jnr aged 25 married Sarah Salmon aged 30 on the 7th of May 1871 in Ostwestry.  Sarahs father is Robert Salmon (a malster) and Roberts father is down as a Labourer. Witnesses are K.....Roberts and Elizabeth Roberts.

1881 census - They moved to West Derby.  Robert is down as a Woodturner and kids are Thornburn and Gertrude.

Cheers,
Phil

Thanks Phil,
I am going to try and follow up Annie Francis, 35, Cousin in 1891 Census with Robert/Sarah
Wish me luck ;D

For others who may wish to help (and I need it)
1881 Census RG11/3700/73/30
1891 Census RG12/298919/32

Christening;
Anne FRANCIS, 21 June 1857, Selattyn, Shropshire
Parents DAVID and MARY
(Source F/S Pilot)

Marriage IGI;
David FRANCIS, Father Robert
Mary JONES, Father Thomas ROGERS
24 December 1852, Selattyn, Shropshire

So Mary must have been Widowed and nee Rogers so probably Mary is a Sister of Ann ROGERS.

Not much help with the original question though!

Thanks Trish for the info, I find it is very interesting and I have something to follow up on.  Robert Snr and Anne Williams are becoming a hard nut to crack.

Cheers,
Phil

They sure are.
Heres another mix into the pot!

1871 Wales Census
Chirk, Denbighshire, Wales
RG10/3784/43/1
Rowland FRANCIS, 33, Head, Mar, Miller, born Llanfair, Denbighshire
Mary, 34, Wife, Mar, born St Martins, Shropshire
Elizabeth, 4, Daug, born Chirk
Jane, 2, Daug, born Chirk
Alfred, 1, Son, born Chirk
Sarah Ann, 3mths, Daug, born Chirk
ROBERT WILLIAMS, 26, Lodger, No Occp down, born Sellatyn, Shropshire
Roberts EDWARDS, 20, born Chirk

Date of Wales Census was 02 April 1871, so if this was him he had time to go back to Shropshire to Marry Sarah.

Trish :)

EDIT;
Any other contributions from other Chatters welcome!

There's rather iffy possibility for Robert as a 14 year-old servant (carter) in Hordley (RG9/1884/70/8) - he gives his birthplace as St Martins, which is the same as his son in 1891.

Not especially convincing or helpful, I'm afraid!

How about this as a possibility for Ann Rogers in 1841, if Mary (daughter of Thomas) is her sister?  If it's the right one, it puts the marriage between 1841-1846.

HO107/915/86/ 6 - Llywynymaen, Sweeney, Oswestry

Thomas ROGERS  60  Coal Miner
Eleanor ROGERS  58
Ellen ROGERS  25
George ROGERS 15
Ann ROGERS  15
(All born in county.)

Thanks for coming in here MR :)
I am going to give this a rest tonight and look at it again tomorrow.
I have been unable to find Robert Jnr in 1851 with or without Parents.

Thanks Trish and Manchester Rambler for your help.  Still trying digest and work on the information you have provided. Still can not find the marriage for Robert Williams and Anne Rogers as this will confirm both their fathers.

Cheers,

Phil
