Alice's birth looks to be 1909 from two sources. I have her marriage certificate from November 1932 which gives her age as 23, and her death in 1968 (Free BMD) gives her age as 59.
Her marriage certificate gives her father as Joseph - deceased.
On the 1911 census I find two Alice Closes, born abt. 1908 and 1910. Both have fathers of the wrong name.
The Free BMD shows a 1909 birth in Tynemouth, but that is one I found on the 1911 census, her father's name is Thomas.
Her marriage was in Uxbridge, Middlesex. Her address at that time given as Rickmansworth.
Any ideas?
-
The age of Alice Blower (nee Close?) on her death certificate is given by the informant and could be incorrect, and it has been known for the father's name on marriage certificates to be wrong.

Do you know if Alice had any siblings?
-
Are the witnesses to her marriage, family members perhaps?
-
The witnesses don't appear to be family, not surnames I recognize, anyway.
I don't know of any siblings.

Indeed, so I could be looking for anything.
-
All Alice's children are dead, BTW. There is nobody to ask.
-
Give us all you know, what exactly does it say on her marriage cert?
Do you know if she came from 'down south' .......ie Uxbridge,or had she come down from farther up north?
We have come across plenty of challenges before and with ALL the facts can often unravel a few clues.Making up a dad's name on a marriage cert is often done to hide illegitimacy of course.
Do you know what date she celebrated her birthday,if not the year?

OK, here's what we've got.
8 Nov 1832 Register Office Uxbridge
William George Blower 25 years Bachelor General Labourer 13C High Street Harefield Father: Henry Blower General Labourer
Alice Close 23 years Spinster (No profession*) Moorcroft, Ablons Rd, Spoor Park, Rickmansworth (address obviously wrong, but that's the best I can make from the poor print quality here) Father: Joseph Close, deceased General Labourer
Witnesses: Emily Jane Joyce, Elizabeth Matthews
* No profession - doesn't look like she was a domestic servant, which maybe could have explained her being a long way from her birthplace, if one of the northern births are correct.
I have no idea if she might be a northerner. No idea at all.
-
No sign of a death for a Joseph Close in the Uxbridge area, BTW.
-
Alice's address is likely to be Moor Park Rickmansworth.
You can post a small section of the cert here for people to give their opinions.
Carol
Added- there's an Aston's Road there today.
-
Here's the address, although your guess sounds right.
-
Morningglory - women's
names occupations were often omitted from marriage certificates even if they were employed. ;)
-
I wonder whether an email to Uxbridge library asking for an electoral roll look up of around the marriage date may reveal more about Alice?

A bit of research on the marriage witness Emily Jane JOYCE suggests that she was the wife of a Richard James JOYCE and that they lived in the Uxbridge area.
Birth, Sep qtr 1873
Emily Jane BLOWER
Uxbridge 3a 29
Marriage, Mar qtr 1907
Emily Jane BLOWER
Richard James JOYCE
Uxbridge 3a 39
Death, Mar qtr 1954
Emily Jane JOYCE aged 80
Uxbridge 5f 120
ETA: Emily seems to have been a daughter of Joseph and Isabella BLOWER of Harefield, so presumably related to William George BLOWER in some way (a cousin, perhaps?).
-
Carol: I have the marriage certificate of William Rogers (Herald Chaser) to Eliza Holmes, is the information of interest to you?
I have no idea why this should be amongst our family certificates.

I have already contacted Three Rivers museum, you never know. I can try this too. It certainly isn't possible to figure this one out using the usual means!

Joseph and Isabella were William's grandparents, therefore, this lady was his aunt.

Well, I thought about that, if she was giving up her job to get married, for example, then it was no longer her job. But the more I look at it, she must have been a domestic servant, or her mother was, to have lived at that address.
-
How do you know that it wasn't the family address?
Carol
-
Well, it's a very humble branch of the family, to put it delicately ;D and then judging from things like this:
http://northwood.uxbridgegazette.co.uk/2011/02/northwood-streets-boast-some-o.html
http://www.yourlocalweb.co.uk/hertfordshire/batchworth-heath/pictures/
Very posh area.
-
I see what you mean ;D ;D ;D
Mind you this is now ,that was then ;)
On second thoughts she was probably working there!

I’m the great grand daughter of Alice Close. My grandmother Valerie was born in 1938 and passed away in 1971. My dad Geoffrey Ward, born 1965 and passed away in 2016. He told me when he was alive that his aunties or Valerie sisters were still living in the Harefield area. I couldn’t get much out from my dad as he never wanted me to research his side of the family. Just wondering if anyone had any luck on the Close side of the family tree as I’m getting lost. I got William G Blower married Alice Close in 1932 and she passed away in 1968 but other than that, I have nothing else

Hello Valerie and welcome to Rootschat.
Morning Glory hasn't been online since 11 November 15,but as long as he/she hasn't changed email addresses, should be notified that we have posted here and return to this thread.
Fingers crossed. ;D
