Title: THOMAS ELLIS
Post by: garaboto on Sunday 20 March 11 19:43 GMT (UK)
I would be most grateful for any help with the following:

My Grandfather, Thomas Ellis born Rhos but uncertain about year but I think most likely 1868/1869.  I have found several birth records which could correspond but since no parents names available I can't cross- check and don't want to order several certificates.

If someone could look up for me - Thomas Ellis, father John Ellis, mother Elizabeth Ellis please.

Thanks, Gwen in France

Hi Gwen, the 1871 Census shows Thomas with a brother William aged about 7 and sister Sarah aged nine months, there could be the possibility that father John married twice.

1871 census gives his dob as 1869, and he's living with parents and a brother and sister in Rhos.
1881 census gives dob 1868  and he is living with his parents John and Elizabeth & 6 brothers and sisters William,Sarah,John,Edward,Hannah,Robert in Ruabon.
1891 he's not with his Father, who is now a widower and living with his brother in Ruabon. I don't know where Thomas is in 1891 but I know where he is in 1901 as he gets married to my Grandma in Glamorganshire.
I want to order his birth certificate but I have three GRO birth references which could be him - 1868 -11b321 - 1868 -11b301 & 1869 -11b345 so I wondered if in the parish record for these dates it would give the names of the parents so I would know which if any of these references was him, then I can order just one certificate instead of three

thanks Gwen

A better bet would be to order sister Hannah's Certificate, for her's there is no alternative. The GRO ref is Wrexham District,April quarter 1877,Volume 11b,Page 324.

Well Gwen,it seems quite obvious to me how it would help. You would find out mother Elizabeth's maiden name!

Are the entries for Thomas all at Wrexham?    In that case you could write to the local office to buy the certificate and explain that you want the one with those parents and father's occupation.  They don't need the GRO reference just the approximate year.  Most local offices are very helpful about that sort of thing.

Yes they are Andrea.  My problem is that I don't think the local offices will accept payment by Visa card.  It looks as though I will have to programme a visit to the UK with a list and do the 'rounds' of the register offices ;-))

Anyway thanks all for the suggestions

I just googled the Wrexham office and it does look as if they take cards.   Says debit or credit.  Worth asking them.
