Title: Date needed please
Post by: -Glen- on Tuesday 22 March 11 17:46 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Any idea of a date for this photo please? And any other thoughts?!

(I might be wrong, but i suspect that it's my Great-Grandmother on the right and she was born sometime around 1891)

Thank you, Glen.

Not a dating expert but

it's 20th century (China and Jim will say exactly when)
the girl on the right hand side will be younger than 16 with her hair down
and I'm struck by the very large "buttonholes" the two of them are wearing, which look quite similar to your large group photo on the other thread.

I can't see these two in the large group, but is it the same occasion?

I would never have known about the connection between age and hair being worn down!! (I guess you could say 'how times have changed'!)
And I think you're spot on with the observation of the 'buttonholes'! The women in both photos, do indeed seem to be dressed the same!
Thank you so much IgorStrav!
I'll be interested to see what China and Jim say too.
Thanks very much, Glen.

Around 1912 or so. Beautiful photo!

And yes, girls tended to wear their hair up when they reached marriageable age.

Cheers,
China

I can't see these two in the large group either but their dress and flowers look very similar.

I wondered if the group might have been a St David's day celebration or somesuch but the flowers seem to be carnations rather than daffodils.

I think this photo was taken in early spring as there is very little foliage on the plants behind them although perhaps some new shoots on the rose plants to the right hand side?

It seems an odd place to put the chairs to take this picture, on a narrow path in the garden in front of a not particularly attractive fence (no offence, pardon the pun).  If it was taken the same day as the group shot then I would have imagined there were more photogenic backgrounds to choose than this.

Intriguing!   Heather

Wedding? Has the lady on the left just taken off her lace veil?

The girl is wearing a watch pinned to her blouse, see it?

Cheers,
C

You're amazing!! None of us have ever spotted the veil before!!!
And the flowers could well be explained by a wedding!
Thank you again!  :)

You're amazing!!

Jim, are you paying attention? ;D

They could be sisters...same mouth, same smile.

Cheers,

Yes they do!
Could they be Aunt and Niece?!
(As far as we know, my Great-Grandmother grew up with an Aunt in Blue Bell Hill, Kent, England and I'm sure that's my Great-Grandmother sitting on the right)

Well...your guess would be as good as mine on that, but I would say they are related somehow. Very similar faces.

Those skirts are handmade, or at least the girl's. The hem is a bit uneven, and hasn't been pressed :)

It's a really fascinating photo...Ii keep noticing more little things in it.

Cheers,
China

Oh, and Mary Jane shoes, they became popular around 1910 or so :)

Wedding? Has the lady on the left just taken off her lace veil?

I don't see a wedding ring on the one with the lace / veil draped on the back of the chair. ???

You're right!  No wedding ring!

What about that little detail, China?  ::)

Perhaps she was a bridesmaid set to look after the veil (or perhaps they'd been washing the nets and stopped for a pause in the sun?  ::))

What, IS, are you accusing me of not noticing??

Well, I didn't ;D

Maybe she just sat down on it. And I bet the bride had a fit when she saw ;D

No criticism intended, China, but you did say you kept noticing little things in the photo.

I'm just as bad, because I didn't notice the lace until you pointed it out and then I STILL didn't look at the lady's ring finger.  Doh   :-[

Are we writing off the wedding idea?

What other occasions would flowers be worn?

It's a shame we can't spot these two in the other photo, to confirm they're taken on the same day!

Confirmation? The girl's wearing a very light outfit that could be white. Catholic girls usually wear lace veils...dunno about CofE...?

I think Holy Communion and Confirmation are only Catholic events? Don't think they're CofE?

Confirmation, certainly CofE. I did it :D
