Title: Hinwick House, Wellingborough
Post by: Indigogirl on Wednesday 23 March 11 18:50 GMT (UK)
I have found a photo in my parents house titled Hinwick house Wellingborough.Summer term 1912

It has 4 men and one woman seated and surrounded by 26 pre teen boys in suits/school uniform. It is taken in front of a door and Georgian style windows

I can find no reference to Hinwick house being a school or something similar altho it was used as a hospital in WW1. I have found a reference to a Hinwick Hall which was bought by the brother of the owner of Hinwick house. This building was made into a school for children with disabilities in 1942. None of this brings me closer to what was going on there in 1912 tho!

As this photo came from my parents house I would like to connect it to someone in my tree if possible and would like some clues if anyone has any further information please?

Hinwick is a hamlet of Podington, Beds - I have some family members who were from there.

Have you seen this ....,

Also does the 1911 census tell you who was living there then

Cheers John

Frustratingly i dont seem to be able to get a match on FindMyPast

I''ve established the owner/teachers name is G Gruggles but I cant locate him on a name search  nor any variations on Hinwick or Podington  for an address search??

Can anyone oblige with a reference or a clue please?

From 1901 census, a George W GRUGGEN is an assistant master at the school in Hinwick House. He's 31 years old & born in Chichester Sussex

Augustus S Orlebar is the Headmaster.

RG13/1439 Folio 11 Page 13

A George William Gruggen age 41 in an Institution in Northamptonshire turns up if you search the index of 1911

& just for interest......

JohnP- isn't  that a strange coincidence that that specific postcard from someone at Hinwick House should have been posted on Flickr just a couple of days ago!

Cathy- the name took me straight there. It shows how difficult it can be to find info even when you know its there.

Having now looked at the names on 1911 I don't think there is a connection to my family.  My best guess is that it belonged to Herbert St Vincent Addenbroke who was born in Harrogate.

Its rare to find an old photo and then be able to identify some of the strangers in it.

Thanks again

I've just found your message from March last year and have signed up to Roots.com so I could send you an answer.

I have just been looking at the history of my old prep school, Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempstead.  I was there in the 1950s and remember Hinwick House being on the school honours board, shown against  names from earlier times.  My searching led me to
 <www.bedfordshire-lha.org.uk/newsletters/HIB%205,9.pdf> from which I quote . . .

"Augustus Henry Orlebar was the Flight Commander of the Schneider Trophy team from 1929 to 1931, when Great Britain won the trophy outright.  He was born on 17 February 1896 in the Red Room at Hinwick House, and was known in the family as ‘Harry’.  His father was Augustus Scobell Orlebar, and his mother’s maiden name was Hester Mary Knowle.
Harry’s father had rented Hinwick House from his cousin Richard Orlebar, and ran a preparatory school there, which used the Orlebar coat of arms (argent, two bars gules with three roses argent) as the school crest.
The school later moved to Hertfordshire, where it was known as Gaybridge (sic) Park School; it continued to use the Orlebar crest, and periodically paid the family a royalty for so doing."

Another source states that Gadebridge House, formerly a private house, became a school in 1914 so this would be when it moved from Hinwick House.  Gadebridge Park School was forced to move from Hemel Hempstead in 1963 when the New Town Commission took over the land.  It is now Westbrook Hay School at Boxmoor.

Hope all this is of interest to you

Would it be possible to e mail me a scanned image of the photo you have of HinwickHouse? Florence Quinney was a cook there when the 1911 Census was taken outside the school and was probably working for the staff in the photo ...it would be good to add it into the family tree.
Kind Regards
Christine
