My great, great grandad George Barnard lived in Cley next the sea Norfolk. In the Census he was living at The Grocers shop hill top, cley next the sea. I am going to cley soon to trace my family history but cannot find the location where the grocers shop was. If anyone has any information about where it was or any history on the Barnards I would be very greatful.

Hill Top still exists as a street - try Google Maps!
I remain unconvinced that George's actual address was Grocers' Shop, though.
For anyone who wants to check, 1901 census:
Reference RG13/1827/157/25

Originally, the Enumerator just wrote 'Hill Top' - like the other schedules copied onto the page.
Then he wrote over that - it does indeed look like Grocers Shop .... or maybe GameKeepers ??
have you tried 1891 or 1911 census?

What you've posted is a transcription, not the original. A snip of the original has been posted in reply #1.
I can't see 'Grocer's Shop' either.
I think what might have happened is that the enumerator has wrongly started to write George's name in the address column.
He's then overwritten it with Hill Top.
What looks like an 'S' in the middle of the address could well be part of the 'B' of Barnard.

Hi Dawnlw, coming to this thread two years since the last posting, but here's hoping. Did you get much out of your trip to Cley? My wife and I stayed in a hotel recently where it turns out my great, great niece once worked and one down the road that was run by Jack and Annie Barnard. I know very little about the North Norfolk connection, I was brought up with the West London branch. Going back up to Cley in a couple of days to continue the search. Would love to share info. P89.

Hi Dawnlw,
Was your George born in Cley next the sea? The reason is I have a very large number of Barnard's in my Family tree. My Grtx3 Grandfather was Barnabas Ezekiel Barnard, he and his wife Ann Maria Griston had 9 children one was named George Barnard born 1823 in Besthorpe Norfolk, could this be your George?
Regards Tomscot

Hi I have recently came back from a visit to Cley and I've been talking to my Uncle who said that his father was brought up by his family and also lived with a Barnard family in Cley. Not sure if it is the right one that you are looking for
