Hi. Started to look at the 1871 census for you as it has a half-hearted address index and is generally easier to read than the 1861.
These don't seem to be yours but you never know what might come in useful...

Hi Gardener,

Thanks for this. The first few are cousins of my Hardy family. The others may be too. I'll have to check.

My William Hardy was in Shobnail St Horninglow Staffs in 1881, at No. 286 in 1891. Are they there in 1871?

Thanks

Kate

Sorry I fell asleep yesterday! I'm on some nasty tablets which knock me out every now and then.
Anyways, according to the index then Horninglow is on 2907 and 2908 both of which I checked before. I ran over the address columns on them again now and there is no  Shobnail Street there so either it was a new street after 1871 and before 1881 or it was in a different bit of the census and called something else - anything to confuse us!
But do not dispair because this must be the family you want!

The question marks are mine, sorry all the bits you actually want to read are unclear. I'll look at this address in the 1861 if I can find it and see if they were there.

Kate,

Burton on Trent parish church is well covered for baptisms in the IGI;
apparently complete from 1663-1877 (almost a miracle). There are 2
of William HARDY baptised 1830-40, but the 1836 one died as an
infant. The other just the right age, so seems likely to be your man; in
case you have not seen this:

William HARDY bapt 14 Oct 1832, Burton Upon Trent, Stafford, England.
Parents Thomas HARDY & Ann.
Batch C033331.

Also noted from the IGI, the Thomas (40) & William (48) of Gardener's
first 1871 census post would be sons of George (72) & Sarah (73).
You probably could put both families (Thomas & Ann, George & Sarah)
together from the IGI, if not already done. I'm assuming from what you
said about cousins that Thomas & George are probably brothers.

I have 1851 census images but no index - but I looked at Horninglow
(nothing) then at some of Burton; I think I got lucky and found them.
At least, William is 18, and is a cooper's apprentice, and born Burton.

It's piece HO107/2012, folio 99, page 21. Address is Station Street,
Burton upon Trent; whole family born in Burton. Image posted below.

I also had a look in White's 1834 directory for Burton & its hamlets,
but no HARDY under Coopers. Oddly, there is no Carpenters section,
but under Turners and Chair Mkrs there is a very slight possibility for
Thomas, though he would have been very young to be in the directory:
Hardy Thomas, (turner only) Staley's yard, High street
Beware that there seem to be a lot of Thomas HARDYs in this place!

Cheers,
Steve

Hi again,

I decided to have a look for George and Thomas in the IGI - as I said, I was
guessing they were brothers, and I hate unsolved mysteries!

In a batch search, found Thomas (I think), parents Robert & Rosanna;
then got the family up to 1812 (the end of the batch). Here are results
for what they're worth (seems to fit, but there also seem to be a lot of
HARDYs in this town):

You searched for:      British Isles
Father: Robert Hardy, Mother: Rosanna
Exact Spelling: Off
Batch Number: C033333

1. MARY HARDY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 15 JUL 1810 Burton Upon Trent, Stafford, England
2. GEORGE HARDY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 17 JUN 1798 Burton Upon Trent, Stafford, England
3. WILLIAM HARDY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 20 FEB 1803 Burton Upon Trent, Stafford, England
4. THOMAS HARDY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 15 JUL 1810 Burton Upon Trent, Stafford, England
5. ANN HARDY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 13 OCT 1805 Burton Upon Trent, Stafford, England

Steve, Gardener,

You are absolute stars! Give yourself a cyber pat on the back. That's my William Hardy back to 1851 and the baptism. Now I'll look for where Susanna was born and what her last name was.  Perhaps Maddox or Gregory based on vague sources. Was she born in Lichfield Staffs, Roundry Wilts or Thadsley?

The father, Thomas Harry Hardy married Ann Gretton 8 May 1832 St Modwen Burton. He died I think 1884 or 85 and she died 1874 I think. Where were they in 1861 or 1871? I would imagine near one of their children. Thomas was with his daughter jane, married name Carbon in 1881 in 56 Dallow St Burton.

Thomas's parents were Robert and Roseanna. No more info on these yet.

Thanks

Kate

I looked for the Freeman entry in 1881 and had trouble finding it as Emma Louise seems to be dead and the other two are in the household of Tom's brother Robert with Ada listed as "daughter" which is misleading to say the least.
My heart goes out to Ann if she really did go on having kids until she was 50!

Hi Gardner,

Thanks again.

A Hester or Esther is on IGI as being the daughter of James and Fanny Hardy. May just be another one. Were Hester and Edith descried as daughters too on the 1861? Sometimes they claimed the illegitimate children of their daughters as their own. Certainly Ann must hae been very Hardy(!) She died in 7 Sep 1874 age 66.

thanks again

Kate

Hi,

Slight problem with my HARDY family. I have discovered there were two Emma HARDYs born in Burton around the same time, 1867 to 1869.

One Emma Hardy who married my g grandad Edward Driscoll in Bromley Kent, 1894
and one Emma Elizabeth who married Richard Edward Knight in Sep 1894.
in 1901 census she is 33.

There is an Emma parents William and Susanna aged 13 in 1881.
And another Emma parents Richard and Caroline/Eliza bap 1 Aug 1867. Can't find her in 1881.

Which is which?
Does someone have the 1871 to find The Ricahrd and Caroline family, which may have middle names? Or the baptismal records?

thanks

Kate

Hi again. The 1871 has no name index at the moment so it would be a long search to go through all of Burton in the hope of finding Emma No2.
Don't you have the marriage cert. for Emma Hardy/Edward Driscoll? What does it say for her father's name and occupation?

Thanks

These names seem to match the ones on the IGI from parish registers/BT so it seems that this Emma did not have a middle name - though she might have added one later :)

Thanks a lot Gardener.
how are you doing these days?
Is 1871 census indexed or do you have to trawl through the pages to find my Hardy families? I'm still not sure which Emma Hardy is mine. And even them why she and no one else left Burton and the rest of her extended family for London/Kent.

Kind of you to ask  :) I'm getting used to the tablets now so I'm doing just fine.
No, the 1871 is still not indexed though there is a street index for the larger places. I ended up looking for a street map to find Broadway Street and then skipped through the pieces to find the right area. I got lucky and it did not take long to find the family you wanted.
I used to go shopping in Burton years ago but all I remember is the dreadful smell of hops, no street names or anything useful!

Hi

Emma Hardy came to Bromley from Burton for the 1891 census. I think she went with her older sister Sarah Maria Hardy who married Thomas Bernard Morley in Burton in 1882 and was in Bromley in 1891.

My first post reviving a very old thread here but I guess I don't have access to the PM system being so new - Kated, I believe I am researching a member of the Hardy side of your family - Thomas Hardy (1891) of Myrtle Villa and later Sidney Street, Burton-on-Trent, son of Eunice and Thomas Hardy.

He served in the Rifle Brigade in the First World War and I've been trying to build more of his story. His medal index card is available but little else. Please send me a PM if this is of interest and we're talking about the same man.
