Title: John Voss is dead but were? COMPLETED
Post by: percy porter on Tuesday 29 March 11 04:40 BST (UK)
John Voss who has been missing was found for me today, he was mistranscribed as Doss!
In the 1861 census he is living with his wife Emma, two daughters Emma and Alice and son Alfred John, in Friary Lane Dorchester

They appear in the 1871 census but as Cox, Emma is described as a "Widow" and is living in Paddington (RG10/piece 2/folio 62/ page 37) with youngest daughter Alice and son Alfred J. A search under both Voss and Cox for John born 1826 Dorsetshire has turned up nothing to date. Both Alice and Alfred J have in subsequent official documentation been listed as both Voss and Cox, I have no Idea why the name change but it seems to have occured around the same time as the shift from Dorset to London.

I would be gratefull if a fresh brain and pair of eyes could look at this one for me.

Alfred John is my maternal Great Grandfather.

Regards

Hi Alan the death of John, would appear to be:-

John Voss Dec 1868 Kensington 1a 26 aged 43.

So I take it from your comments, that prior to the marriage you have no idea of the whereabouts of John, would that be correct?

Thanks to you both, I had spotted the Dorset duplicate death and I suspect that was doubled up on transcription, I do favour the Kensington death though and I'll check out the death cert on that one.

I do have the wereabouts of John prior to this and that is well documented just that gap which was causing me a problem. I am flummoxed as to why the name change though!
