I am looking for information on Robert Patterson or his wife Jane McDowall, I don't have much more information other than Jane had a son James born in Newtonards 1847 before she married Robert. James' surname later changed to his stepfather's name of Patterson. James married Harriet Louisa Snowdon born 1858 in Essex.
Can anyone help. Anything would be great.
Cheers
James

There is a site w/a lot of Patterson info at rootsweb. I think this is it: http.freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7ewaughp/mine/p1.htm#;64 I have Patterson's in my family from Canada in mid 1800's but they started out in other places of course. If that link is wrong try using the small letter i instead of the symbol ; I can't read my own writting sometimes and it could be either.

After the .com/ in my last post the next is the percent sign. It looks like 96 if u look at it quick. Leagen

This association of McDowell and or Patterson intrigues me. My Irish descendants were from Newtonards in County Down Gt.Gt.Grandfather William Paterson. My Gt.Grandfather Hugh Paterson from Ballyhenry in the parish of Newtownards was born in 1825 and came to Glasgow in the 1840s ( a handloom weaver who set himself up in business with a Beaming Shop in the east-end of the city. As for McDowall. My mother spoke much of an Aggie or Agnes McDowall - believe it or not she gave birth to eleven sets of twins (that must be a record) although not all survived. I once possessed a photograph of she and her husband but sadly missing from my archive now. I expect you know that the town of Paterson, New Jersey was named in honour of a William Paterson who came to the USA as a child with his parents. He was a clever lad who became a lawyer and a senator and had something to do with the framing of the constitution of the USA which is why he was honoured in that way. I have reason to believe that my Gt.Gt. Grandfather is of that bloodline but have never been able to prove. The Mormon Temple Library in Arizona will confirm the details of William Paterson and his claim to fame through his activities in the US government and the naming of the town Paterson in his honour.

Hi There!
All I know is that the Agnes or Aggie McDowall or M'Dole on my family tree gave birth to eleven sets of twins - not all of which survived. I once possessed a photograph of Aggie and her husband (whose name I do not know) but foolishly destroyed it years ago. I don't quite know where she fits in to my Paterson/McMillan or Mullen Irish connections. My great grandfather was namely, Hugh Paterson of Ballyhenry (Weaver) bor 1825. I wonder if any of this helps you.

I am looking for any information on Jane McDowell b1828. She had a son James b1846 who was adopted (I think) by Jane's eventual husband (Robert Patterson) and changed his name to Patterson.
From the LDS website Jane was born in Comber and from Army records James was born in Newtonards
The LDS website state James christened on 5th April 1846 but Army records would make his birth as June 1846
In June 1864 he received a Conditional Discharge from the Royal North Down Rifle Regiment of Militia in order to enlist in the army. In the Militia he was No.2332 Private James Patterson.
He enlisted at Belfast in the 96th Regiment of Foot for a period of ten years in July 1864. Private No787 he was 18 years and 1 month

I think church records should become all important for your search. if i think of something i will come back, in the meantime please look at comberonline.com and consider signing the quest book, Jim

Thanks,
I can't find comberonline.com, do you mean comberonline.org?
-
sorry yes

Five years later and I'm still no further on with this part of my tree :'(

James, Searching in Ireland is quite difficult, I have been looking for the death of a chap, who was the husband of Susannah MCDOWELL, for about 5 years now, probably no connection to your McDowell/McDowall.......but you never know........Del. P.S....Have you tried the Ros Davies website ?
-
9 years after first post and other than James' baptism, I'm no further forward with this side of the family :'(
copyright image removed

What were his father's details in the record of marriage to Harriet Louisa Snowdon?
-
Robert Patterson, butcher deceased
-
Now 14 years after first post and still no further on with this part of my family :'( :'( :'(
-
What are you expecting to find? Have you looked for other church records besides the baptism of James in 1846? What details are on the marriage of Jane McDowell to Robert Patterson?
-
I would love to find more about James' parents but I can find no record of a marriage between Jane McDowall and Robert Patterson.
-
If James was born around 1846 it's likely that his parents were married before 1845 which is the start for civil registration of non-Catholic marriages. There may or may not be a church record of the marriage (remember that not all church records are online) but if there is the details will probably be date and names of bride and groom.

This is an update to what I know now.
My great grandfather was baptised JAMES McDOWELL on the 5th April 1846 in St Mary's Comber.
His mother was JANE McDOWELL, she was single when he was born.
When he joined the army in 1864 he gave his name as JAMES PATTERSON with his next of kin given as mother JANE (No surname) and his place of birth as Newtownards.
He was married in Colchester in 1876 and gave his father as ROBERT PATTERSON (deceased butcher).
He died in Glasgow in 1915 and the death certificate gives his father as ROBERT PATTERSON (deceased butcher) and his mother as JANE PATTERSON (deceased) maiden name McDOWELL.
I assume that Jane and Robert married after James’ birth but I can find no record of it, nor can I find any record of their deaths, I don’t even know if Robert is James’ natural father, so any help would be much appreciated.

It could be that the parents never married but have you searched for a marriage in Scotland or elsewhere in U.K.?
What about the death of Robert Patterson- it should list his marital status. A Will or probate record might give more details. Also mother's death should list marital status.
Any known siblings?
From the LDS website Jane was born in Comber and from Army records James was born in Newtonards
Exactly what record shows she was born in Comber?
-
I have tried all of the UK for wedding of Jane and Robert and all the UK for their deaths without any luck. I think you may be correct and they never married.
I think my orginal post with "From the LDS website Jane was born in Comber and from Army records James was born in Newtonards" should be "From the LDS website James was born in Comber and from Army records James was born in Newtonards".
