Title: England to Canada 1912
Post by: tiktok on Friday 22 April 05 20:09 BST (UK)
Can anyone tell me where I can look to find naturalization list pre 1915 for Canada?  My 4 x great uncle left England in 1912 and settled in Nova Scotia whre he lived until 1961 and died aged 84. I know he left with his wife but I have been unable to track down how he got there, if he had children etc?

any help or advice much appreciated :-)

Hi,
My relatives name was william Enoch Hiden (born 30th August 1876 in Staffs),  although it sometimes appears as Hayden. He and his wife Marion, (nee spencer, born 29 Sept 1887 in staffs) left England in 1912. They lived and died in Nova Scotia but after they England I know nothing of them.
Thanks, Michelle

Hi there,

until about the 1940's or later (not sure when) citizens of Great Britian were not required to become naturalized citizens. Canada was still considered to part of the Commonwealth.

William Enoch Hyden served for Canada in WW1 - here is a link to his sign up papers

There is also a James Hyden from Staffordshire serving in WW1

Does the following seem to connect to your Hiden family

Hello again

here is someone else who was looking for the Hyden's from England who moved to Nova Scotia - perhaps you have already connected with this person but just in case you haven't take a look -

Thanks for all your hard work, that's brilliant, thanks so much.  Can you give me any advice as to where (if anywhere) I can look online for children of William and Marion?

It's kind of strange.... William enoch's mothers was a spencer by birth, born in staffs also. Was it common to marry distant or close relatives? Of course it may be just a coincidence.

thanks again, the info and documents are great!

Hi

I don't know of any online site where you could look for their children BUT if you check out the Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia website you can email them and ask for the funeral home records for William Enoch - these records will list next of kin and should have a copy of the obit as well.

Let me know if this works out - if it doesn't then there may be other ways to get a copy of the obit (if there was one)

I'm  not   sure  how  it's  done  in  UK  but  obits  in  Canada  have  the  names  of  children  listed  in  most  cases so  if  you  get  it  you'll  have  some  luck.

Hello

John Benjamin Selby born served in WW1 and lists his address as Smith Mills, Quebec - wife is Lucy - he is an engineer
http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gat2/088746a.gif
http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gat2/088746b.gif

there are another set of papers in WW1 for a John Selby born 1878  that are slightly different - wife is Lucie and they live in Montreal, born in Aldershot, England - he is also an engineer
http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gat2/088745a.gif
http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gat2/088745b.gif

These two could be the same person - perhaps he was turned down for service on one form so applied again. That would explain the differences in the information.

Quebec is one area I am not very familiar with (I don't speak French, unfortunatley) so I can't be of much help there. The war records for the two files above are avialable - here is a link on how to order the files

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/0201060101_e.html#How%20to%20consult%20a%20file%20on-site

you may also try getting a volunteer from this site to copy the files for you and send them to you - please read the guidelines for submitting a request first
