Hi I am wondering if anybody can help me ,my Grandfather Percy Albert Ellis was born at 7 Baronial Terrace in Radnor Park Dumbarton in 1893 just wondering if anybody is able to help me with this as I know that after it was bombed they tore it down rebuilt it and gave it new names .I am coming up that way in April and would love to be able to go and find the street .Can anybody help.Regards Fiona ???

Hi Fiona,
I am not familiar with Baronial Terrace ..I know most of the streets in Radnor Park. which is in Clydebank G81. I am not aware of a Radnor Park in Dumbarton. Clydebank comes under Dunbartonshire....maybe that's where the mistake lies.
You are right that Radnor Park was bombed badly during the war,and they did rebuild it...but I'm sure the street names stayed the same. Do you have any other information that would help us?

Sorry no my grandfather was born there but I am unsure why ,my great grandparents left wales to come to glasgow and lived at Shamrock st ,they also had 2 shoe shops one being in Shamrock st and the other in Renfield st .His brother was born in Glasgow and also his sister so I can not work out why he wasn't also, I did phone up the birth record office and asked where he was born and it was them who gave me the address but also the dater of birth seemed to be out by a year, Clydebank archieves didn't know where about it was they said that the streets had been renamed after they were bombed .
I was told that I could get information from the web site called the Scottish people but I don't know whether they would give me anymore details

Hi Fiona
From the 1901 census, Baronial Terrace shows in Old Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire. 17 Baronial Terrace looks to have at least 4 households living there in 1901 (24 people showing at that address that year). In 1901, over 350 people showing as living at Baronial Terrace.

Hi Fiona
The web site you are looking for is scotlandspeople it will give you all the information you need if your Grandfather was born in Scotland. You will need credits for that site. The general Registry of Scotland in Edinburgh also hold records of Births, Deaths and Marriages. They can post to you a birth certificate if you have a credit card. Don't know the cost but you could ask.. telephone number is 0131 334 0380. Renfield Street is in Glasgow and hasn't changed that much... Shamrock Street I think will probably have changed. Let me know how you get on.

You could also try google earth it will show how the streets are now.
If I can think of any other web site ,I'll let you know.

Hi Fiona,
Bing Maps...should have said when your Glasgow map comes on screen , click on images for the old photo's. Did you ever consider that your G Grandmother could have been visiting a relative in Baronial Terrace when she gave birth?. The transport wasn't that good but I'm sure there was tramcars/railway back them..its worth thinking about. I think the key is finding out exactly where Baronial Terrace was. If it was where the woman said Radnor Park, it was so badly damaged the street won't be there now. If you look at web site blitz on clydeside run by glasgow.gov.uk click on photo gallery you will see the devastation in Radnor Park...nothing was left standing except the 'La Scala' cinema.

Every bit helps as far as I know I don't think we had any relatives living there as my great grandma was from London and then in an orphanage in Bristol and my great grandfather was from Liverpool but living in mid wales will have to have a look at the postal books that they have in Scotland .will keep you informed thanks Fiona

I have been onto the Clydebank Library and they said they have got old maps plus area books so I hope that I will have some luck on the 16th as I am not having much luck now will let you know .also when you say that Shamrock street has changed in what way ?
-
Hi Fiona,
Good you got some news from Cydebank Library. I still have the feeling that Radnor Park is where your Grandfather was born, I'm sure that area was known as the Terraces. Could your GGrandma just have been friends with someone she met when she came up to Glasgow to live?... its another possibility.
I know you are going up to Glasgow on 16Th..its a long journey.. maybe I don't want you to get to disappointed looking for your streets. Renfield Street is much the same if you have the right number I'm sure you will see the shop you are looking for its right in the City centre. If I remember right..there is not much left of Shamrock street...there's one old building left but most of it is now flats. Its next to Stow college, I think it came under the district of Garnethill/Cowcaddens. Its just off junction 17 as you come into Glasgow if you are driving.. You could try google maps street level...you can view the street.

Thanks for all of that

Hi Myrram I am back from Glasgow and some good news and some bad firstly , you were right Renfield street was still there except the part I needed which is now Tesco's bank , Shamrock street is no longer there and not much info from the Mitchell so I headed fro Clydebank library and what help I had from Mary and Jo they managed to find Baronial Terrace and yes you were right it was part of the terraces but has now changed to 33 Granville Street they even had pictures of it and records of it being their rented home and shop fantastic so thank you all for all your help ,Going now for a well earned rest !!!

Hi Fiona,
You are very welcome....good to know that your trip wasn't all bad. I feel that when you are dealing with the unknown as in Ancestry...it helps if you know where you are at before you start out. The girls in Clydebank Library seem to have helped as well..that's good, and to see pictures of how it was back in Grandfathers time, helps put some of the missing pieces more together.
I'm happy that I was able to help. Take care
Myyran.

Small world! I have just discovered (via the 1901 census) that my great-grandparents and my grandfather lived in 10 Baronial Terrace Radnor Park! Had never heard of it before until now. As the last Scottish descendent from him I am still in Clydebank, only 10 mins walk from where Granville Street is now.
-
Welcome to Rootschat....its amazing the interesting topics that you can find here. I'm sure if you go along to Clydebank Library...you will find out a lot more about Baronial Terrace.
-
And my great grandparents lived at 20 Baronial Terrace, Radnor Park, during the 1901 Census. :)

Wow, small world right enough! ;D
-
Hi Helen, maybe you could get in touch with Clydebank Library, askt them to send you a photograph. It will give you an Idea about the type of tenements your GGrandparents lived in.
Dont know how much it would cost, its nice to have an old photo it makes it all real in your mind.

Hi my name is John Hills and my great great grandparents lived at no 20 the same place as Helen's.It is indeed a small place.Mine lived there in the 1901 census :),seems Helen and I must be related.I live in Sydney Australia.
-
Hi John, welcome to the forum. I also live in N.S.W. (came to Oz when I was a little girl) But I'm afraid that's as far as the connection goes :(
20 Baronial Terrace, as far as I am aware, was a tenement building, so our rellies were neighbours, but that's about it. I don't have any Hills in my files, throw another name into the ring and we might find something. ;)

Hi Helen mine were David Hamilton and Family at least they lived at the same address,2 weeks ago I couldn't find them, just knew they came from Scotland.
-
Hi John,Do you have a time frame for David's birth?
Anything at all to help you locate him?
Helen
-
John, I found David's marriage on Scotlandspeople, but I'm sorry, not enought credits left to view the image.
David Hamilton married Jane H. Campbell, 1882, Eastwood, Lanark.
If you view the marriage it will give you their parents names (and mothers maiden names).
