Hi, my uncle John Edgar Adams was in the 1st. Corringham, Essex scout a patrol leader. He was killed in 1932 when he was 12 years old. There was a huge funeral held in Corringham. MY grandparents had a silver cup engraved in his memory, and presented it to the scouts. My grandmother did try to find out as to it's whereabouts before she died.
This is a hard one I know, it could even be in someone's shed or just lost.

Hi Yonno
Me again, I am a local to Corringham, I will see what I can come up with, I have contacts within the scout movement as my grandchildren are scouts
Do you have any paper clippings about it?
LM
PS I have been in touch with the local scout master and hope to get back to you if she can find out something, if not I will contact 1st Corringham Scout group

Hi,
Somewhere in Essex there must be memorabilia to the Gilwell Park World Scout Jamboree held in the 50's. I wonder if the cup could have ended up there. Gilwell Park is near Upton in Essex I understand - the other place it may have gone to is his old school.

Hi, I did contact the Media & Communications Manager at Stanford-le-hope, he sent me some newspaper cuttings, they were hard to read, I don't think they would work on this site. He didn't come up with any news regarding the cup. Evidently John was on his way to school in Stanford, my old school actually.
I have a photo of the cup from my grandmother's photo album, I could put it up although one cannot read it as there is some glare from the light.

Hi Yonno,
How about putting the story in a free local Essex paper with your picture of the cup and funeral picture. Someone must know something.
I don't know the Essex papers but I bet someone on here will.

Hi Yonno
I have been in contact with the person concerned who I know is well connected to the local scout groups, she is going to find out for me where this cup has gone, unfortunately for us she is away from Wednesday for a few days so she night not get back to me before then but she will find out all she can
Gilwell Park has a museum so it might well be there but I am confident she will find out for me
regards

Thank You Louisa, I had a contact from a relation that I never knew existed, he said that Lillian Mabel Adams, was in fact a Catholic Nun Sister Mary of the Blessed Imelda, she died in 1981 I even received Photos of her. So that is one more mystery solved. I thank everyone who helped.
Regards,
Yonno :)

Hello again Yonno, reply received today, so hopefully I will be receiving a reply soon, watch this space
LM.
"Dear LM
I have at last managed to speak to someone about the Trophy you were asked about relating to John Edgar Adams.
The Scouting person I spoke to was involved in trying to track this down some time ago. He has asked me to forward your details to him so that he can fully explain to you directly.
Would you mind confirming that it is OK for me to pass your email address to him, he is bona fide "

COPIED IN IT'S ENTIRITY
Hi Louisa Maud
Are you related to this forum thread by any chance?? http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=525684.msg3849810;topicseen
I'm the same person mentioned in the thread as being the media person.
Attached are photo's taken of the Thurrock Gazette dated August 1932 from the Thurrock Museum. We also found his grave in Corringham Cemetery. Unfortunately it is unmarked. Photo also attached from his funeral.
To give you a little history of Scouting in the area, Thurrock, Stanford-le-Hope and Basildon all formed one large South Essex District which would have been how it was around the 1930's. Then at some point after the second world war, Stanford-le-Hope & District broke away from Thurrock District. Stanford also included the area that now makes up Basildon. Then in the 60's ish when Basildon new town was built Basildon split away from Stanford-le-Hope.
Despite hunting high and low for the Cup in all three Districts, it has so far not been found and no one seems to know it's where abouts, if indeed it is still in existence.
I have also asked at The Scout Association's HQ in London (which also happens to be where I work) and the Archive Department there do not have any information about the Cup of John Adams either.
We're still asking around and should there be any news I'll let you know.
If you post the items onto the forum thead please add "Images provided by Stanford-le-Hope & District Scouts and the Thurrock Museum."
Kind regards
Owen
there is also a copy of the newspaper but I don't know how to copy it

Hi Louisa,
I thank you and Owen for trying for me, as he said, the cup may not even exist.
I did have copies of the news paper about his death, very hard to read as it is small print, also a bit graphic.

Yonno

Hello Yonno
Well Owen has helped us as much as he can which was kind of him, I don't think I can help you further but I was pleased to be of little help I could

Hi Yonno
I think by now Owen has contacted you, I am more than pleased that this is almost resolved and the cup referred to has been found, it has taken some years to track it down, persistence on Owen's part has paid off
