Title: Laura Barrett or Barratt
Post by: Agatha R on Tuesday 12 April 11 20:59 BST (UK)
My Great Grandmother is a bit of a mystery, I found her on the 1901 Census living in Isle of Ely Littleport it says she was born in 1885 in Little Witchingham Norfolk and put her surname as Barrett, then she married Harry Fountain, and when he died she married My great grandfather James Goodburn, the husbands were cousins and she lived in Benwick Cambridgeshire with both husbands and remained in benwick for the rest of her life, on both marriages she spells her name as Barrett and on the 1911 census she leaves blank where she was born.
What I want to know is where she is on the census's before 1901, I cannot find her anywhere, and on the 1911 census she puts her birth year at 1887 not 1885 as in 1901.

Strong possibility there, keyboard86- oh ye of many talents  ;D

In 1901 Laura is with an Edith Barrett 22 yrs

The one you found also has an Edith M aged 18 yrs but could possibly be 13 yrs on census.

Free BMD has Edith Mary b 1878 St Faiths which is right registration district.

I have not posted all because I am assuming Agatha, that you have access?

Hello Agatha,

well that just adds to the mystery. All things (to date) have pointed to the daughter of Alfred and Lucy.

Who are the witnesses on the marriage certificate? Do you have the second certificate- wondering if she gives the same details re father.

Laura's Husbands family are the witnesses at the marriage.
I will have to send for her second marriage certificate now.
Do you think she is lying or trying to hide something?

From various marriages on here (and at least one in my own family) you wonder how important -or  not- it was to give a father's name. Some people seem to just make one up.
The only thing I would say is that there are these births:

June 1885  Laura Barrett St. Faith's    4b   93

June 1886  Laura May Barrett     St. Faith's 4b   97

One seems to belong to Alfred and Lucy but who is the other one?
