Title: Gibraltar search for Louisa Maria Oliver b.1847
Post by: shopbooth on Wednesday 13 April 11 18:53 BST (UK)
Hi

I'm interested in any information anyone can provide about:

Louisa Maria ?  b. 1847  in Gibraltar

She married William OLIVER - possibly an army man b.~1841 London.
Their first child was born in Colchester, England in 1866, suggesting marriage in ~1864.  This may well have been in Gibraltar.

Thanks

Thanks for the census info.

I made a discovery as well on FamilySearch while searching for Louisa and William Oliver's children - one of which is my great grandmother.  She was born in Ireland in 1875 and incorrectly recorded on FS as OLIVAR.
More interestingly the Irish birth record has Louisa's maiden name - Murch or March.

I have established that William Oliver was a military man and moved around with his regiment between barracks in Gibraltar, Ireland and elsewhere.

So what I now need to establish - any help much appreciated!! -  is:

1.  is there any birth record for Louisa Maria MARCH or MURCH  b. ~ 1847
(birth place from census: GIBRALTAR, 1911 census - Swiss Parentage)
I could pay for children's birth certificate to confirm maiden name & more detail re father/witnesses

2. where and when (probably ~1865) Louisa married William OLIVER.
Would she marry in Gibraltar if that is her birthplace/home parish?  How does the military connection affect things/records?  William was born in London and based much of his UK time in Colchester (barracks?)

Any help with tracking the marriage especially appreciated.

Thanks

Followed a useful lead which brought up the marriage BMD from 1866 in Colchester.

Still would appreciate any info of Louisa's birth in Gibraltar.

 - there was a Henry Murch who m. Harriet Maria Read (she b. Corfu, he a soldier). They were back in Colchester by sometime in the 1860s (can't find them in the 1861 census, though).

If this is possibly your family, there may be army birth records for Louisa.
If the 1911 was right about her being "Swiss" then that might make things trickier.

GRO Army Chaplains Birth Indices (1796 to 1880), p.95:
Name: MURCH Louisa Maria
Station: Gibraltar
Year: 1844-46
Page: 557

FindMyPast also has the discharge papers of no. 1574 Sjt Henry Murch, Royal Engineers, discharged at Chatham 11/12/1858 aged 44 years & 9 months, after nearly 23 years service (including 2yrs 5mo in Canada, 5yrs 7mo in Gibraltar and 8yrs 6mo in Corfu, but it doesn't give precise dates!). He was a carpenter by trade, born at Broad Clist, Devon, and was attested at Exeter on 18/1/1836 aged 21yrs 10mo. Promoted 2nd Corporal 1/5/1841, Corporal 1/10/1843 and Serjeant 1/4/1847.
Unfortunately there is no information on marriage or next-of-kin to definitely tie him in with your Louisa.

Found William Oliver's service record on FindMyPast (use the Advanced Search, enter his name, and put 1588 under "Soldier number"). There are 9 images - but you needn't bother with the last one!
Image #7 confirms marriage "to Louisa Maria Murch at Colchester Essex on 10th January 1866". Their children aren't mentioned.

He was born c.1840 in London Marylebone, occupation Harness Maker.
Attested in 1st Bn 5th Regiment of Foot at Westminster 28/12/1859 aged 19.
Promoted Corporal 13/8/1861, promoted Serjeant 1/12/1864.
Transferred to 1st Bn 1st Foot 1/2/1865.
Transferred to 2nd Bn 18th Foot 10/6/1866.
Transferred to 61st Foot 7/5/1870.
Discharged at Bristol 19/7/1881 after 21 years & 203 days' service.

Service History:
29/12/59-20/09/69 Home
21/09/69-19/12/70 Bermuda
20/12/70-01/07/72 Nova Scotia
02/07/72-08/02/78 Home
09/02/78-18/08/80 Malta
19/08/80-12/05/81 India
13/05/81-19/07/81 Home (misses the 1881 UK census by one month!)
N.B. "Home" includes Ireland, so OK for Charlotte's birth in Fermanagh in 1873.

P.S. BMD marriage reg: Louisa M MURCH & William OLIVER, Jan-Feb-Mar 1866, Colchester, Vol.4a, page 269.

That is all fantastic stuff - I didn't expect this degree of help - and so quickly.
Thanks to all of you for taking the trouble to make these discoveries and pass them on.  Taken together they give me a much fuller picture of the family OLIVER in the 19th century.

Thanks again for your help.

I now have the marriage certificate for

William OLIVER m Louisa Maria MURCH   10 Jan 1866

The fathers were:

Henry OLIVER  Cordwainer

Henry MURCH   Carpenter

The witnesses:   Henry MURCH & Maria MURCH - presumably father & mother

Coming back to this search after diversions elsewhere... I wonder if anyone has any suggestions/discoveries on the identities of any of the parents.

The military record for Henry MURCH apparently does not mention his wife/children but does confirm the carpenter link - Broad Cist, Devon.
Any info on wife 'Maria' - or is it 'Harriet Maria' after all?
Presumably Henry Murch (with Maria) returns to Bristol/Devon after discharge and appears on census/death records post 1858?

Is there any info on spouse/other family of Henry OLIVER, Cordwainer of Marylebone ?
