Title: Ballycarry Cemetery help please! Completed with thanks.
Post by: J.A.M. on Monday 18 April 11 15:40 BST (UK)
Hello all,

I have recently discovered that a relative, Alfred McCalmont M.B.E., is buried in the Ballycarry cemetery. Unfortunately the M.B.E. information is not public record so that is a closed door.
I would appreciate it greatly if anyone in the Ballycarry area could provide me with a photo of the headstone or a list of the names & dates on it.
Alfred was born 22 July 1897 at Ballymoney, Islandmagee, son of David McCalmont & Jane Hanvey - died after 1945. He married Mary Agnes Bell - unknown date.

Thank you.

J.A.M.

Thanks stevenson & aghadowey,

I had seen the S.S. Gracehill item & contacted the U.K. Archives & the Honours & Awards Cabinet Office. Both advised that there was no public domain information concerning the reason Alfred was given the award. I am now waiting for a response to a letter I wrote to the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle.

Steve you made my day with the stone info. Thank you.

Hi I have just joined roots chat and came across your message about Alfred mccalmont. I am researching my wife's family and ii think Alfred  mother was Jane Hanvey (sister of my wife's great grandfather)who married David  mccalmont. Would be keen to keep in touch and I plan to visit the graveyard in the near future.

Regards
Phil

Phil Leckey.

I have Hanvey/McCalmont data for you.

As you are a new poster you need to make 2 more posts to be able to send & receive RootsChat Personal Messages (PM). Once you are able to do that we can exchange e-mail addresses & information.

Hi there
An elderly lady I know was a close friend of Captain McAlmont in the late 1950s. She remembers him and his son Stanley very fondly and has asked me if I can find out what happened to Stanley after Alfred's death. I know it is a long shot but if you have any information it would mean a lot to her.
Many thanks
Lilly

If Stanley's father was born 1897 then it's possible that Stanley is still alive.

Hi and thank you for the fast response.
First of all I must correct an error in my text it was the late 1940s of course not 50s.
Yes I thought Stanley might be alive and if so he will more than likely remember her. Her name is Irene but they called her Rene, from Preston in Lancashire. If anyone knows anything about Stanley please let me know.
Many thanks Lilly

Hello Lilly,

Sorry to report that my cousin Stanley McCalmont died 5 July 2009.
If Rene has any recollections to share I'd be most grateful if you could pass them on to me. Or if she is willing to talk or write PM me with an address or telephone number.
Thanks.

Roger

Hi Roger
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to answer my enquiry. That was sad to hear. I will tell Rene when I visit her tomorrow. I think she will still feel like she has made a connection so the information is very much appreciated. She is nearly 92 and has talked a lot about visiting the McCalmonts lately. I will ask her if there is anything she would like me to pass on. She does not hear well so the phone would not work.  Would it be ok if I contact you again if she has any questions?
Best regards
Lilly

Lilly,

It was no trouble. Contact me any time.
If she has any photos of Alfred or Stanley I would appreciate scans, or the real thing.
Can you tell me how they became friends?
Thank you.

Roger

Hi again
Sadly she has no pictures apart from a very battered newspaper cutting from when Alfred got his M.B.E. It would make her day if you has any photos you wanted to share with her.
I will ask her permission to tell you the story. I am new to this site and not sure how it works. Is there a way we can communicate less publicly?

Thanks again
Lilly
