Don't know about Ballarat but there is a really good Museum in Bendigo that focuses on the Chinese Miners  ;)

Helen Doxford Harris specialised in Victorian goldfields research and wrote books about it.
But there are others, too.

abc if you go to www.qfhs.org.au, click on Services, down to Library Reference Section catalogue search, put in goldfields for first search and Victoria for second search and you'll see a few references on the subject.
It's possible/probable that SAG in Sydney have these too, or your local library may be able to get them on inter-library loan for you?

The Ballarat Library has the Australiana Research Room which may be of help

http://swft.chrl.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/chrl/rw

Click on 'History' and then on the page that opens on 'Australiana Research Room (Ballarat)'.

One of their staff came to my local library and gave a family history talk.  She was very helpful and did some follow up checking of records back at the Reseach Room for me (no charge).

Hi

The Ballarat & District Genealogy Society work in with the Ballarat Library and have a lot of information on their site.
There was someone from the society who was doing research on the chinese in the area.

I might be wrong but I recall that the Victorian government of the time did not allow Chinese (or non-white) immigration. The Chinese had to land in South Australia and walk the hundreds of kilometres to the Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields.
