We've had a rumour in our family that one of our ancestors was brought over during the prussian war by his parents and orphaned on a door step to save him from returning to Prussia. With so many Ulrichs in Kilmarnock this story is quite difficult to verify. Does anyone have any idea where I could find information regarding orphans or the like?
I've tried census forms but since I"m not sure of the year or address it's difficult for me cross reference these documents.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
The info about John is about my great great grandfather, John Ulrich
Gadget -
Concerning the different info on John's marriage and death certs, do you think that the info on the marriage one is more likely to be correct as he was alive then to make sure the right info was on there ?
Also, do you have any connections to the Ulrichs yourself ? or are u researching this just out of interest ? thanks in any case
Below is some info I received from member Bluedoo (Rita), who is also a ulrich by birth and related to John as well :-
Cheers,
Warren

Did your Mum stay in Gardrum Place, Onthank because I remember meeting a Jane who went to Kilmarnock Academy, she was the first Ulrich I had met outside our immediate family. Your father's brother John had a son Ian who got this guy to do his family tree and now I have a copy, my brother had 2boys Colin and Brian and Audrey and that's the lot for our side living in Ayrshire they don't appear to be very fertile. I met your G gran Janet when she lived with her daughter who was married to a McLung, I was starting to trace my family and she could tell me how many children there were and what John was like apparently he came here with his brother but his brother returned home a few years after marrying Jessie he was homesick and went back to the village (Janet said this) where his family lived but neither the village or his family were there and so begins the struggle to find from where he came.

Hi Warren
It's usual for the marriage cert to be more accurate than the death cert - in this case John would be closer to his parents than his son. However, if he left Bavaria when he was circa 3 or 4 years old, maybe he wasn't sure who his mother was :-\
I've looked for overseas birth registrations/marriages, etc but have not found anything for his parents. Where did you get the info on him arriving in uk in 1846 as I couldn't find him on the 1851?
If you'd like the certs, send me a Personal Message(PM) with your e-mail.
I don't think that I'm related but you can never tell with my SW Scotland ancestors ;D

From what I could gather John/Johannes came from Bavaria and his father was Hendry (?Hein(d)rich) and mother was either Mary Auld or Friets Gensinger but try as I might I don't see a record for him.

Hi Rita
How are you ? Have you managed to find your copy of the Ulrich family tree by any chance ?
Thanks,

Hi Guys,
I think we have confusion in Ritas list regarding the Janet Ulrichs (#12 & #13). I know I was at a Gran Ulrichs 100th birthday.
Janet Ulrich > July 1892 - February 1993
-
I've looked up my recordsa nd your right Janet was born 22nd May 1892 at home 2 Robertson Place, Kilmarnock. I met her in her daughter's home
( Craigie Ave ) before she went into nursing home this was when I 1st started on family trail, she told me John came to Scotland with his brother who later returned home, after he was rushed into marriage he was homesick and his wife told him to go back and see his family, on reaching his village there was no one there the village no longer existed, she said it was a village, maybe it was destroyed in Franco-Prussian wars who knows, I've tried for over 15 years to find form where John came but to no avail, our local paper did an article about the pits that closed in Kilmarnock area and as I read John was a miner somewhere I'll try that track, what side of the family do you hail from.
-
Hi again Warren, Sorry I've not got back to you on this, do you still want a copy if I manage to set it up.

Warren
If your still around can you contact me I've lost your details. I've some family history for you.

Hi Warren, I'm on the trail again, Charlie my hubby died in January so I've not been all there, but he said to me last year that I must finnish my family history so here I go again, anything new from last posts.
-
Hi Rita,
Sorry to hear about your husband, hopefully you are coming to terms with it a bit more. I agree, we must find out about the village in Germany where John came from, and its one of my main objectives in researching family history as well.
The only thing i've really found out in connection with this is that most of the Ulrichs in Germany came from Nuremburg so maybe there might be something there. Of course John might have come from somewhere else in Germany. When I find out I'd like to go over and see where the village was.
I'm back in Ayrshire just now, it'd be good to get a copy of your Ulrich family tree if you can get one.
Cheers,
Warren

I'm trying to find some information on my father's family. His name was Henry Ulrich (born Feb 12th 1951, died 1976) in Kilmarnock. He had 3 siblings, (*). Henry's father's name was Christopher Macmillan Ulrich (born 1925ish?). This is all the family history I know of from my father's side! Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Hi Gia1972
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Sorry to edit out some details from your first post here on RC. As you can see from the posts above yours, personal details, particularly names of those potentially still living should not be included here on RC. We aim at all times to protect people's identity and privacy.
Can I ask some questions?
Have you got a copy of your father's main certificates (birth, marriage and death)? Each one of these will include information most likely to help you work back on his family.
Monica :)

Thank you Monica!
I do have those documents, but not those of Christopher, so I suppose that's where I should start!
Many Thanks :D
-
The birth for Christopher will be one to order (not sure where you live? If you are close to one of the main Scottish genealogy centres, you can view more modern certs on line on a day's ticket). His marriage cert will also give you details on both his parents and your dad's maternal grandparents.

Hello Monica,
I previously posted as gia72, but now I’m back on the family tree search with a new username:).
I’m in Wales, so too far to pop to Glasgow to the Mitchell to check out stuff.
Thank you for the info though :)
