My grandfather was born in Sonnagh,Glenamaddy,Roscommon in 1912.(Owen Francis Kilgannon). He had lots of brothers and sisters but I dont know there names because he didn't talk much about them. All I know about his father is his name was Michael Kilgannon and his mother was Ellen.Michael had a sister called Celia and I have found them in the 1901 census living with his mother in East Sonnagh and sister. He is on the 1911 census aged about 45 with his wife Ellen and daughter Annie aged 1.I know nothing else at all and I wonder whether anyone can point me in the right direction in researching the family back because I have found it very difficult.I know Michael came from Galway and so did his mother but where do I go next because researching them has been very difficult.Any help would be apppreciated!

There's a possible birth for Owen on the BMD Index - it's in the registration district of Glenamaddy, which as far as I can tell only includes townlands in Co. Galway...
Name: Owen Frances Kilgannon
Registration district: Glennamaddy
Event type: Birth
Quarter and year: Oct-Dec 1912
Volume : 4 / Page : 206
A birth cert would give you additional details including his mothers maiden name, which in turn would help you locate his parents marriage ...

Thanks for that.I know this may sound stupid but how do I apply for a birth certificate from this area?Is it the same principle as in this country?Where do apply for it.Is it the area of Roscommon or Galway?Sorry Ive not applied from Ireland before!

You can order historic certs (i.e. before 1922) for all counties in Ireland from GRO headquarters which is in Roscommon. See the topic links included in the post above.

Is this your Michael, Ellen & Annie on the 1911 census ?
Kilgannon household, townland of Sonnagh East, Co. Galway (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Glennamaddy/Sonnagh__East/458786/)
All born Co. Galway and Michael and Ellen state they are married about one year - so c1910

bit of a discrepancy in his age, but possibly Michael on the 1901 census.. living in the same townland as 1911 :
Kilgannon household, townland of East Sonnagh (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Glenamaddy/Sonnagh_East/1380572/)
On the 1911 census form their first child's age is given as one month, and there's a good match for her birth on the index in the same district as Owen :
Name: Anne Kilgannon
Registration district: Glennamaddy
Event type: Birth
Quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1911
Volume :4 / Page : 231

and finally ... a possible marriage for Michael and Ellen :
Name: Michael Kilgannon
Registration district: Glennamaddy
Event type: Marriage
Quarter and year: Apr-Jun 1910
Volume : 4 / Page : 168
name: Ellen Quinn
[same references as Michael]
see : Details included on a Marriage Cert (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433042.0.html)

Thank you for all your information and for the mothers name that is fantastic! Any other information would be grateful such as other brothers and sisters etc.
-
there's a few possible siblings of Owen on the BMD Index - that's assuming the family stayed in the same area... but you would need certs to confirm. Even though Kilgannon seems to be an uncommon surname there could be another family in the area.
See : Kilgannon births, Glenamaddy Registration district, 1911 to 1920 (https://www.familysearch.org/search/records#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Akilgannon~%20%2Bany_year%3A1911-1920&collection_id=1408347&birth_place2=5%2CIreland%2CGlennamaddy)
p.s. that's a possible marriage - you would need the cert to confirm the details
