Title: Penninghame/Newton Stewart
Post by: kathleenmitchell on Wednesday 04 May 11 19:04 BST (UK)
Hello,
Please can you help me because I am confused  :-\ I am researching my family of Livingston and Milroy, I cannot understand if they lived in Penninghame or Newton Stewart as both addresses seem to merge.  The address is Queen Street Penninghame or Queen Street Newton Stewart.

If anyone can help either with the address problem or the families I would be most grateful.
many thanks
Kathy

Kathleen
I noticed you have surname Ferguson. My Fergusons came from Wigtownshire, Penninghame and Newton-Stewart too. I know very little about the addresses but if I'm not mistaken Penninghame is a church parish, Wigtownshire is a county, and Newton-Stewart is a town.
Like my Andrew Ferguson who was a grocer in Newton Stewart lived (and worked) at 27 & 29 Arthur St., Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, Scotland. His death is listed Newton-Stewart, Penninghame, Wigtownshire, Scotland. That's the best I can describe it.

Just confirming what burklegs said - this might help:

(includes plenty of useful links and excellent maps)

Queen Street, Newton Stewart is viewable on google maps, so you can take a 'walk' down there.

PS. Welcome to rootschat burklegs.  :)

Hi Kathy,

I have Milroy's from Newton Stewart in my family tree. I have the addresses as Penninghame, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire.

William MILROY was a plumber and married Anne McLean MOFFAT - Moffat being my ancestors. Anne was a daughter of Joseph MOFFAT (my GG Grandfather) who was also a plumber.

William Milroy & Anne Milroy (Moffat) had a daughter Catherine Johnstone MILROY -she married a a Willam Mitchell.

I have 1800's letters from Newton Stewart and the surrounding crofts but unfortunately they do not mention Moffat or Milroy. I will be glad to look for other surnames.

I just noticed that you also have MCLEAN  as a second name so it was probably a family name. I do have letters mentioning variations of that name if you are interested.
Lettter from Oct 1864 says "John McClean and his wife are both well but their family scattered likewise." It was from father in Scotland giving news of friends in Scotland. Sorry it did not give more detail but all of these people mentioned lived around the crofts of Baltersan or Clary just a couple of miles south of Newton Stewart.

burklegs,

I don't know where the McLean came from. My family tree is MOFFAT. My GG Grandfather Joseph Moffat had his plumbing business, in Newton Stewart.

My GG Grandparents Joseph Moffat, his wife Catherine Johnstone and family are buried in Penninghame Old Kirkyard as well as some Milroys.

I posted this in another spot but it didn't go into your stream about Milroy. MILROY is mentioned several times in Gordon Fraser's humorous booklet about Wigtown Whithorn and the N-St area.

burklegs,

Thank you very much much, found it most interesting. However, I am not sure if the Milroy mentioned, is connected.

Here is a reference to Moffat the plumber on the new church in 1878.

burklegs,

Thank you so much :D. Very interesting and, I will add it to my family tree.

That is my GG Grandfathers business mentioned in the John Harding's (1881-1963) Scrapbook. I live near the Quarry where the red stone (sandstone) would have come from, back then.

burklegs,

Thought I would let you know I have found the church.

It is now the Newton Stewart Museum, which is housed in the former Newton Stewart, Presbyterian Church.

Thank you once again for your help.

Kathy,

This may be of interest,
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ainsty/parishes/penninghame/penninghame2.html

The parish of Penninghame covers a large area, and includes the town of Newton Stewart, the main street of which is Queen Street, and also the village of Penninghame which lies several miles to the north of the town on the road from Newton Stewart to Girvan. Your reference to Queen Street will be that in Newton Stewart. Penninghame village, and Knowe is very small and has no 'main street' as such. It is mainly centred around Penninghame House, which was for a time used as an open prison.

There is also the church at Challoch which stands in a very isolated spot, between Newton Stewart and Penninghame.

Hope this helps re your address issue

Hi Kathy & Burklegs,

My maiden name is Ferguson (Greenock), I've just started researching our family tree and found out we originally came from Wigtownshire, just early days but my Dad's grandfather was John Ferguson Sr born 1842.

Joined Root chats today and looking forward to finding out more and connecting with others.

Thanks
Jan

Do you have any other info on John Ferguson b Wigtownshire? Parents? Maybe you can find them in the 1851 census of Wigtownshire. cm

Sorry, our John Fergusons don't match. I have several but not born near that time or married to that spouse.

Late to the party. I have Milroys in Queen St Newton Stewart in 1880s to early 1900s. My 2nd great grandmother was Jessie Milroy (Dodds). She lived in 29 Queen Street in the 1881 with her son John, my G Grandfather. He married Isabella McClelland and they lived in Church Street in 1891 and Princes St in 1901. Jessie was in 31 Queen St at that time. In 1901 her address was Queen St backhouse. She died in 1904 in Queen St. Hope this helps.

Hi Kathy

Penninghame is the parish  and Newton-Stewart is the only sizeable town in the parish. Wigtownshire is the County. In 1975, parishes were discontinued as an administration centre. The three Counties of Wigtownshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire were amalgamated to form Dumfries and Galloway region.

Just to confuse matters even more, there was a time in the late 1700s when Newton Stewart was known as Newton-Douglas.

Best wishes
Ian McClumpha
