Title: Seeking info on William Robertson, husband's great uncle
Post by: gizzysmum on Thursday 05 May 11 11:31 BST (UK)
Good morning all,

I am researching my husband's family tree and am looking for any information about his "Uncle Willie" who left the North East of Scotland (Banffshire) and joined the police force in Hawick.  My husband can't remember too much about him, being a small boy when he last saw him, but thinks he had a son called Hedley.  I am looking for a marriage/death record if possible.  William's mother was Jane Robertson, later marrying William Stevenson in Banffshire.

Thanks for reading.
Mary

Hi Mary

There is a possible birth entry for Hedley in Roxburghshire in 1916. It is outside of the period where you can view the entry on line on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk unfortunately so would have to be ordered. The birth cert would include full names of parents, including mother's maiden name and addtionally, date and place of parents' marriage to let you research further.

Thank you for your quick response - I will have a look and order the cert.

Your help is much appreciated!

Mary,

You have no idea how excited I am to read your post.  :o  The Jane Robertson you speak of is my Gt Grandmother and I was looking into the branch of the family you have posted about. I have requested James Hedleys birth cert this evening as well...Sorry, I'm rambling, very excited as Jane is a particularly "interesting" individual and I have uncovered a lot about her but this has fuelled my desire to know more. Your William is the half brother of my Grandfather James Robertson (1886-1951) as Jane had three children by different fathers before she married William Stevenson. I'm trying to work out where your husband fits in. Is he a Stevenson by any chance?

Regards
Gordon

Hello Gordon,
Jane was my husband's granny, a very much loved individual.  He is also William Stevenson (obviously named after his grandad), and Granny lived with the family until her death, so Willie had a lot to do with her.

I will attach (if I can!) a photo of Jane, and also of her husband William.

Any info you can give me would be gratefully received.  I find this genealogy fascinating, and very time-consuming!

With kind regards,
Mary

ps - need to find the pic of Jane, but will post as soon as I find it.

Hello Mary, Great to hear from you.
I have put together quite a lot about Jane. She is the one person in the centre of my family tree who I find the most interesting and if I could turn back time, she would be the one person I would love to sit and ask questions of. The more I find out about her, the more I need to know. She had an eventful life to say the least and it has taken me years to put what I know together. I've also had some professional help to cross ckeck things out and so interesting and difficult was she to trace that she is now a case study for a senior lecturer in genealogy in Salt Lake City!
Sorry, she has caused me so many sleepless nights, just to see that she is known to someone else has made my year already!
I am guessing that your husband is the son of either Anne Milne or John Stevenson. I visited the farm that William Stevenson and Jane lived in a few years ago in Aberchirder and also by accident passed the home where she died in 1950. (The Rose Innes Hospital).

I would be really excited to see a photo of them both as I have virtually no photos of anyone.

I'd be happy to share what I have with you on Jane and the Robertson side of the tree (even though she was born a Norrie, changed her name to Robertson then had three illegitimate children by three different fathers (one of whom I believe (although not yet confirmed) was a William Robertson, father to the William you originally posted about!)

I've got more but it's late and work beckons in the morning.

Kind regards

Gordon

Hi all,

My name is John Stevenson, after my great grandfather John Stevenson of headrooms farm, ord, banff. He is a son of William and Jane Stevenson whom i believe were married in 1899. Jane's former surname was Robertson. I have here the birth certificate of John Stevenson who was born at Headrooms on 2/3/1902.

I dont know much of my family other than this so any info would be greatly appreciated :)

John

Hi John

Sorry, I have just realised that I can't send you a PM until you make at least aother two posts.

I can tell you that your grandfather, John, was my mother in law's brother, so I would be able to pass on a great deal of information.  Have you seen a photo of William or Jane?  I can also email or PM those to you.

Hope to be in touch with you soon!

Mary

Hi there,

Can i take an educated guess that your mother in law was known as Nan?

I have never seen a photo of them no, i do have a couple of John though. I think your husband and my grandmother Marion were cousins.

would love to know more.

John

Hi Gordon and John

Just came across the correspondence you both had in 2011  and 2012 with Mary regarding William Stevenson and Jane Robertson.  I am the Great Grand-daughter of William and Jane.  My mother was Marjory, daughter of Ann.  I don't know if you are both still on this forum, if you are I would be delighted to hear from you as this side of the family is a bit of a mystery to us.

Mary is my auntie, however, due to ill health I am assuming she is no longer using the forum.  Sadly none of the information she gathered was shared with us.  My mum, Marjory, passed away in 2013 and sadly didn't really discuss the family background with me and siblings.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Jackie

Hi folks
I have just been reading the posts about William Stevenson and Jane Robertson.
They are also my Gr Grand Parents. My Grandfather was John Stevenson and my Mother was Eleanor Stevenson Daughter of John.My Mother,s middle name is Jane after her Grandmother Jane Robertson.
I spent a lot of my Childhood at Headrooms of Ord with my Grandparents  and can remember briefly Anne Stevenson my Grandfathers Sister and after my Mother past away I have often wondered what became of that part of the Family.I seem to recall a Family visiting us when we stayed at Orden,s Farm (just down the road from Headrooms) back in the 1960,s and that they may have come from Aberdeen and that the name Marjory rings a Bell.
I have been able to find much of the Stevenson Line of my Family but I too have had difficulty in getting clear Information on Jane Robertson and Elsphet Norrie.
I also have a Photo of William and Jane,s Headstone as they are Buried at Marnoch Cemetery. My own Parents are also Buried there.
I would welcome any other information and can possibly help other,s as well.
                          Thanks
                                     Kenny

Hi Kenny.  So sorry I haven't been in touch, hadn't expected a reply as it has been so long since I originally posted on this site, however, I am delighted to hear from you.  I am also delighted to hear that Ann did have a brother as when I initially started to investigate this part of our family the registrar in Banff advised me she didn't gave any siblings!  I found this really odd as I remember clearly my Grandma (Ann) speaking about her brother, sadly, as I was so young, I can't really remember what she said. I remember my mum kept in touch via post with a lady called Marion (I believe was her cousin) and I do recall visiting Marion when I was very small.  I think Marion lived in Keith with her husband Sandy.  I am a little reluctant to put too much information on this page as Ann (my Grandma) was a very private person.  It wasn't until she past away we as a family heard about her background therefore I would like to respect this.  Is there a way we can post privately?
