Hello.
I am trying to find out what happened to Thomas Vost. He was the youngest son of George Vost and Elizabeth Elderfield and was born about 1884 in Central Cumberland, Greater Sydney, New South Wales.
His parents emigrated from England and arrived, on the SS Orontes, in Sydney on 17 May 1882.
Any further information will be gratefully received.
Regards
Dave

This is the record of his birth in 1884
17023/1884 VOST THOMAS father GEORGE mother ELIZABETH CENTRAL CUMBERLAND
and here are two possible deaths in NSW
25223/1964 VOST THOMAS SOURR DIED 21/7/64 NEWCASTLE NEWCASTLE
63652/1972 VOST THOMAS father GEORGE DIED AT WINDSOR WINDSOR
especially the second one. That would make him 86 or 87 and the district sounds right if he didn't move around much.

14209/1911 VOST THOMAS spouse PINCHAM IVY M at PARRAMATTA

Looks like the 1972 death is who you are looking for:
Death:
VOST Thomas age 90yrs d. 13/08/1972 WINDSOR #63652
Father: George
Death notice in SMH newspaper 14/08/1972:
VOST, Thomas - August 13, 1972, at hospital, of 639 George Street, South Windsor, dearly loved husband of the late Ethel Vost, loving father of Ian, Allan and Keith, aged 90years, at rest.
-
Thomas Scurr VOST - one of the deaths posted by Dawn - has a record at National Archives showing birth-date of 1897 so he is possibly not the right chap.

Hi Dave,
Not sure how much you have on the VOST family in Australia or, indeed, how much you are interested discovering. However, for your interest, I will post some details.
This death of a son who is mentioned in the death notice firmly links the right THOMAS VOST to your GEORGE THOMAS VOST and ELIZABETH SARAH ELDERFIELD.
REG. 30620 In 1976 VOST, KEITH ELDERFIELD
Father THOMAS
Mother ETHEL MARY
The ELDERFIELD was used as a second given name a few times in the subsequent generations of VOST's.
I have not been able to spot a marriage for THOMAS and ETHEL MARY and I am still unsure whether the marriage listed to IVY MAY PINCHAM was your Thomas or another.
She died.

Familysearch shows the birth of your GEORGE THOMAS to JAMES and SARAH (Peck) in 1847 and also the birth of a brother, CHARLES in 1848.
This brother with his wife CAROLINE (nee Hunt) came to Australia in 1884, raised families and died here.
Extensive bmd information is available regarding the 2 families by searching public indexes.
These websites will be of assistance

We will wait to hear perhaps where your searches currently stand before offering more, which you may already have!! ;D

Hello Sue.
This is what I have at the moment. James Vost was born c. 1812 in Hayes, Middlesex. He met and married Sarah Ann Peck in 1845 in Uxbridge, Middlesex. So far I have found 5 children, all born in Uxbridge. Mary Ann, b. 1845, George Thomas, b. 1847, Charles, b. 1849, William, b. 1851 and James, b. 1854.
George Thomas Vost married Elizabeth Elderfield in 1869 at Bromley, East London. They emigrated to Australia in 1882, along with their 5 children, arriving on 17 May 1882 at Sydney, NSW. The children were Sarah Ann, b. 1870, George Henry, b. 1874, Charles, b. 1876, John, b. 1878 and William, b. 1880. All born in Lee, Lewisham, Kent.
William died on the voyage, or soon after they landed, and twin girls were born during the voyage. One twin died at birth and wasn't named, the other was named Louisa. Another son, Thomas, was born in 1884 in Australia.
That is as far as I have got at the moment, so any further info you can let me know would be FAB.

As I mentioned there are records for a brother, CHARLES in Australia. He and his wife and young family arrived in 1884.
There is a good deal of "cross-naming" in the family.
By exploring the websites I have listed you will be able to see a lot of life events for the Vost's in NSW.

PS
the other was named Louisa DAVE
She seeemingly did not marry. She has the ship's name as her forename ;) ;)

Hi Sue.
Thanks for the links to the web sites. I have passed them on to the family as we have other relatives who emigrated to Oz.
Yes I do know about Charles and Caroline. They also settled in the Sydney area and ended up with 12 children all together. One of them was called Thomas, born 1888 in Sydney, and could be the one who married Ivy. Could it be that the Thomas, I was after, married Ethel Mary in another state, not NSW. Incidentally, is there a FreeBMD site for Australia the same as we have in the UK? The cross naming does make things more difficult when you are half a world away from the records.

Hi Dave,
Each State of Australia has its own BMD listings which are searched seperately. There is also a wide variation on what details given on each State's facility, as well as the years which are available.
To explore the different networks you can look at the top of the Aust. Board and go through each State's resources.

Yes, possibly ETHEL and THOMAS married in another state and that indeed, is worth a good search ;D
Here is photo portrait from the 1930's which I think is CHARLES VOST, husband of CHARLOTTE and son of GEORGE THOMAS and ELIZABETH SARAH.

He died in 1938 and you will see this death on..

Hello, fellow Vost family members. Caroline (Vost) Dunn (b.1893) and daughter of Charles Vost, b. 1848 or 49, was my grandmother. I would be happy to help sort out all those Vosts who arrived in Australia in the 1880's.
cheers

Hello Gavan,
Welcome to rootschat :)
Hopefully some family members will be along soon.
I just noticed that there are many VOST probate packets at NSW archives (and a couple of divorces) including many of the names mentioned.

I would be happy to photograph any of these the next time I am there.

I'm pretty sure that the Thomas Vost who married Ivy Pincham in 1911 at Parramatta is the son of Charles Vost (1849-1914). The other one, Thomas Charles Herbert Vost, who married Mavis Beer, is his (i.e., Thomas') son.
