Hi

This may be of some help to you, Robert McGarrol appears to have first entered the Coast Guard Service on 10 December 1826, with a posting to Buckie. According to the Establishment Book (ADM 175/22 pdf 71 - this file can be downloaded for free from the NA website) he had previously served in the Royal Navy. Here we have a problem, because his last ship looks to be HMS Coffin! Apart from the unlikely name I can find no ship with this, or any other name that is close, so this requires a little work. If you do find which ship it is, this would enable you to trace his prior naval service.

On the 25 July 1839 he was promoted to Comissioned Boatman, and transferred to Collieston. His next move was to Worthing on 20 April 1841, then to Thorney on 4 May 1841 from where he was discharged on 3 November 1841.

Re Hannah, don't forget that Ireland was still part of the UK in 1851.

Hope this is of some help.

Billy

The name of the ship really worried me, so after much searching and studying the name on the original record the penny suddenly dropped. It's not the name of a ship, but rather a place, Inisbo(f)fin in County Galway  ;D

Since he came from Ireland, I was able to pick up his career again in the Irish Establishment Books. He moved to Inisbofin from Dunree Fort on 14 August 1826, and to Dunree Fort from Greencastle Revenue Establishment on 5 May 1824 (ADM 175/15 pdf 243), from which point I have been unable to trace him any further.

There was an Inishbofin Coastguard station in Donegal ( not that far from Drumree) as well , have a look.

The Royal Navy used to name some of their SHORE bases after SHIPS, ie a shed on a pier could be Called HMS Stoutheart or something. Coastguard stations were sort of navy shore bases and the staff were all Navy Reservists liable to be called up onto a floating shiip at any time.

Hi Bilcor,
I came across this today. Robert and Hannah are my ancestors too, through their daughter Mary.

Did you find any further information on them?  I know from Hannah’s death certificate that her parents were Michael Doherty and Margaret McGaunigal but I can’t get back any further than that.

Bilcor1 & Nimjim, a couple of things that may help.

Births of children:
Robert McGerl  1 May 1828 Rathven
 f. Robert  m.Hannah Doherty

James McGerl  31 March 1830 Rathven
f. Robert  m.Hannah Doherty

Marquis(?) McGerl  27 August 1832 Rathven
f. Robert McGerl  m.Hannah Doherty

John  McGerl  28 January 1835 Rathven
 f. Robert  m.Hannah Doherty

Deaths:
Hannah McGarrol
died: 1867  Rathven
mom maiden name:McGaunigal

Robert McGarrol
superannuated coastguard man
died: 6 Sept 1858 Buckie, Banffshire
age: 66 yrs
F. James McGarrol (dec)
M.Mary Carney
informant:James McGarrol  son  present

from 1841 census Robert & Hannah had following children: Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary, Robert, James, Marbus (mistranscribed?), John, Hannah, &Susanna

In Tithe Applotment books McGarrol appears in Ballynaloob, co Antrim. Also some wills for McGarrols appear to focus on Deerpark, Glanavy,co Antrm area.
As for Docherty, Michael Docherty appears in Aughtertin, Manorcunningham,Glencar & Ballybofey areas in co Donegal which makes sense as Docherty,Doherty & other spellings very common in Donegal although some records for that name can appear in counties Derry &Tyrone depending on Donegal parish people resided in.Another thing is that the surname McGaunical (which I believe may be misspelling of McGonical/McGonigal)is also found in co Donegal.May be worth seeing if any parish records go back that far as well as looking at wills & civil registrations.Funny I came across this marriage of Michael Doherty father:Michael Doherty marrying Madge McMonagle(?) On 24 Sept 1865 Aughtertin,co Donegal. Hope something helps, Kim

Hi Kim,

That's really kind of you - thank you so much!  The different variations of the name McGarroll is definitely a challenge.  I've seen Megerl ( a brilliant phonetic example!), McGill, M'Garroll, McGarrell, McCarroll.

Can I ask where you found the info on the Irish records please?  There definitely looks like there are some leads I could follow up there.  Many thanks, Nancy
