Hi,
I have a friend who believes that her grandfather died in 1957 in the Sittingbourne area in a mental hospital she thinks, of porphyria.
St Augustines Chartham would not be in the Sittingbourne area, would it?
Does anyone know which hospital he would have been in and then I can search for records of this hospital.
Thank you
Lis

Hi Lis, the best thing would be to check the death indexes if you have a name then we would know for sure the area.
Casalguidi :)

There used to be Milton Regis hospital which long ago had been the workhouse and before it was pulled down for new housing had been an 'old persons hospital'. It was situated in North Street Milton Regis Sittingbourne.
Hope that is of help.

Thank you both, The Death Index does say Sittingbourne Casalguidi. and I think out next move is to order the death cert.
Today in CCA we found there was a mental hospital called Keycol, which closed in the 1990s so I will follow that through. Is this the one you mean Nannie with Rosie?
When we have the death cert will post the info
Thanks

Hi :),
I may stand to be corrected but I think you will find Keycol was an Isolation Hospital for Scarlet fever and the likes rather than a Mental Hospital. In later years before closure it catered more for gereatrics and recuperation patients from other hospitals after Milton Closed .
It did have a Psychiatric Unit in the grounds and I believe still does .
(At least the sign on the A2 Keycol Hill says so)

Hi Lisingreece - Keycol is another hospital on the west of Sittingbourne along the A2 Watling Street - I only knew of it as an isolation hospital (TB) etc and it was gradually phased out - now a site of houses. Incidently next door is Demelza Hospice for Children which was a purpose built hospital and nothing to do with Keycol.
Good luck in your search.

Right thank you, am going to send for the death cert and then we will see hopefully where he was when he died.

Did you get the death certificate and find your answer?

hi ppglou333,
I cannot remember and cannot check this as I am not at home with my records.

Hi Lis
Interested in your post for two reasons! One I have Variegate Porphyria, which is not that common so I'm always interested in it, and two I live just outside of Sittingbourne! I concur with the comments that Keycol was primarily an isolation hospital, but would be interested to find out the place of death. However there was a mental institution at Chartham near Canterbury and that fell under the Bridge registration district; I have a GG Aunt that died there in 1918
Cheers

Sorry Alex that I could not help more. I help a lot of people with their trees and this was several years ago I cannot remember anything about this.
When I get home I will see what I can find.
all the best

Perhaps you could look at Oakwood Hospital Barming Heath near Maidstone, that was a psychiatric hospital, it was founded as the County Lunatic Asylum. I had a relative with dementia who died there in 1877.

I found a mentally ill person from Sittingbourne in Barming (I think it's on Findmypast)
