Title: POLAND: Soroczuk
Post by: krystyna69 on Friday 13 May 11 04:48 BST (UK)
Hello
I am looking for my mothers family in Poland. Her name was Maria Soroczuk born 1925, her parents names were Wassil and Anna. They lived in Samary Poland. She came to Australia after WWII.
I am finding it hard to locate any papers in Poland about my mother and her family.
Can anyone help me please
Thanks

I can get by with a few basic words of polish but would not know where to start. I know from Polish friends that those who emigrated after WWI and before 1989, often had to take other routes , by Austria or Belgium for example. I think it was still very difficult. Closer to the War, though, perhaps a member of your mother's family was in the forces of some kind - and maybe had a spell in GB for a time ?

In London the organisation POSK - http://www.posk.org/ kept a lot of information as many of the organisers of this had been involved in the Polish Government in Exile. I think that could be a place to start - it's worth an email ? Mowie Po Polsku ? if not I think they all speak English now , so you should be OK.

You now, the other thing I am aware of is that Polish emigrants of that time often covered their tracks - some even changed names for fear of what might happen to their family back home. So sad this situation was ignored after the war by the west.

I performed a quick check on Ancestry and a Lady in Bolton born Poland 1923 died in 2003 - don't know if it is a common name in Poland but maybe too, other branches made it to UK ?

There is also a Wasyl born 1923 in Austria who emigrated to Pennsylvania USA and another example of the same surname in Bolton and one in St Albans UK.

I know that is not the answer you are looking for but maybe a few things might help ???

Good luck with it

Dan

and - my father in law was Ukrainian - and when I see the name Soroczuk I imediately thought it was Ukranian ....MANY Ukranians who came to England said they were Polish - because Ukraine fought WITH the Germans because Russia had invaded Ukraine and they wanted the Russians out of Ukraine .
MARIA was UKRANIAN - not POLISH

Also - may I point out - 46,000 Ukraine POWS came from Italy to England in 1946 - they were given the choice to go home to Ukraine - but were fearful of being shot as traitors by the Russians
THE VAST MAJORITY of surnames are WRONG - my father in law Ostap Kabluckyj couldn't speak a word of English - and a Scottish Sergant who registered him spelt his surname Kabluckyj as Ostap said it - 95% did .so most names are wrong - the only records in the world for Kabluckyj are in Liverpool because the name just didn't exist ... so SOROCZUK - go to www.ukraine.com
register
when accepted look down left hand column
GENEALOGY - click
post the name Soloczuk and see if anyone responds
good luck
 :)
ADDED as I thought - no results

so we know Maria was born Maria TKACZUK 23rd January 1923 in the Ukraine - Iwan and Marias 1st born in 1951 ( same age as I am ) gives Marias maiden name as TKACZUK
so - the next step is TKACZUK - is that a name spelt properly ?

YES - 452 RESULTS

https://en.geneanet.org/fonds/individus/?go=1&nom=TKACZUK&prenom=&prenom_operateur=or&with_variantes_nom=&with_variantes_nom_conjoint=&with_variantes_prenom=&with_variantes_prenom_conjoint=&size=10

so the question now is - are these TWO DIFFERENT Maria Sorozuk - or the same person ?
Krystyna - is your mum H****a Soroczuk born 1951 ?

Hi Maria is in Heaton cemetery and this is my grandmother. I replied to the above poster as it was the same name with many similar details (don etc) but I don’t think it is the same person as she was Ukrainian and didn’t go to Australia but like was said - many efforts were made to cover trails in the war. Their first born was 6 years before the child you were aware about (born in germany) On her records we have the name Tcatchuk (unsure of spelling)and Plotnik too - which gave confused me. There are also other inconsistencies which I’m interested in digging into.
