Thank you both for your help. The only other information i have is that James had a daughter Mary she married in 1949 and was aged 24 years. James's parents were Robert and Mary Bowman. Robert Bowman died 31 January 1948, occupation as a Blacksmith and his mother Mary died 23 February 1941 at Great Corby, Carlisle.

Sorry, this is the problem i have got i do not know James's wife name or where Mary was born at? I see that there is a Mary B Bowman in the births but not sure if this is James's daughter birth, as on her marriage she is just called Mary.

The problem is its such a common surname as we cant check census's :(
But I agree with Ladyhawke that one look most likely
-
Do you Mary the Daughter would have left the letter B out of her marriage as Mary B Bowman on purpose? I am also having great problems with chrisitian names as they seem to have used them in the following families. Regards

Looking at what we know, the marriage of a James Bowman to a Mary Brooks took place in Morpeth March q 1823
We then have a birth of a Mary B Bowman Morpeth Sept q 1825 so it all fits, I wonder if the B in Mary's names stand for Brooks :-\
-
I looked up that birth on free bdm and yes the "B" stands for Brooks I also found a brother for Mary his name was George Bowman, this is when i began to wonder if this was the right James Bowman marrying Mary b Brooks because i could not match the daughters name Mary to anyone only Mary B Bowman, which did not fit the name Mary.

I think the only thing you can do is get the marriage certificate to see who James gives as his father, I cant think of any other way :(

I think you are right it would be the only way,
Thank you very much for your time and help, will let you know

Oletta,
Is your James in 1901 census, age 4, living at Great Corby, Carlisle, with parents Robert (Blacksmith) and Mary. RG13/4863/23/3
If so there is plenty of info on the internet about him, google Sir James Bowman, 1st Baronet of Killingworth, General Secretary of the Northumberland Miners Association 1935-1950, Chairman of the National Coal Board 1956-1961.
According to his Obituary in the Times, dated Oct 6 1978, he was born March 8, 1898, Great Corby, Carlisle, father a blacksmith. Worked as a boy at Ashington Colliery before working up through the Union then Management ranks. Married Jean, daughter of Henry Brooks in 1922, and had one son and one daughter.
He died 25 Sep 1978 and his son Sir George Bowman (1923-1990) inherited the baronetcy.
Alan.

Hello Alan
I cannot thank you enough for this information, yes this is my James Bowman. I have googled and found some very interesting information, it reads:-
Born in Great Corby, near Carlisle worked at Ashington Colliery from the age of 15. He served in the Royal Marines during the first world war then returned to coal mining, where he became an active in the Northumberland Miners Association. He then became general secretary on the Union in 1935 and Vice President on the Miners Federation of Great Britain 1939, holding the post unopposed until 1949 during which period he took a leading role in reorganising the Union into the National Union of Mineworkers.
James then advised in reforming the German trade Union after the second world war. He also served on the 1947 Royal Commission on the Press and Beveridge's Committee on broadcasting. He withdrew from trade unionism at the end of 1949, instead taking a National Coal Board post in 1956, he was appointed Chairman. He stood down in 1961 due to ill health and which point he was created a Baronet.
I see that his son George died in 1990. Could anyone please give me the reference numbers so I can obtain George and James's death certificates? George Bowman was born in 1923.
Thank you again to all
