Hello all,
I have been searching for William Connon and family for some time now but have been unable to find them. I thought that the 1911 Scottish Census would be of help, but it only tells us that they were not in Scotland. I have also checked the 1911 English Census, but have been unable to locate them on that either.
The missing family consist of:
Father: William Connon, b. 27 Sep 1865 at Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire.
Mother: Bella Stevenson (Mrs Connon), b. 21 Mar 1879 at Turriff, Aberdeenshire.
Child 1: George Stevenson Connon, b. 26 Aug 1894 at New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire.
Child 2: Rachel Connon, b.22 Dec 1897 at Macduff, Banffshire.
Child 3: Davina Connon, b. 30 Mar 1902 at Auchterderran, Fife.
Child 4: Hugh Taylor Connon, b. 19 Mar 1905 at Banff, Banffshire.
The birth of Hugh is the last we hear of them.
I have checked passenger lists but have been unable to find them on those either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
regards

Child 1: George Stevenson Connon, b. 26 Aug 1894 at New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire
That would make Bella only 15yrs old when he was born - is that correct? It also means that William was almost 14yrs older than her
-
They are on the 1901 census living in Fife - surname correctly spelt but Bella is Isabella and birthyear confirmed as 1879

Hi Carole,
There is indeed a bit of an age gap.
They married on 7th July 1894 at New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire. She claimed to be 16 years old. She would have been 8 months pregnant then.
I think William would most likley have been locked up in this day and age.

Hi Keyboard86,
That must surely be them. The J may be an I for Isabella?
Thanks very much for this information.
How on earth do I trace them now? :P

Hello,
I did check for marriages in England for Davina, Hugh, and Rachel but couldn't find any.
When I couldn't find them on the 1911 Census for either England or Scotland, I presumed they may have left for good (bar perhaps a visit home to the family).

Thanks again for all this information. They certainly liked to travel!
Given that we haven't seen William Connon, the father, does this mean that he didn't leave the UK? I can't find a death for him in Scotland.
-
Given Isabella's age in 1910 and the age of her children - I would find it unlikely that she would have opted to travel to Argentina unless William was already there. However - it is strange that he has never accompanied her back to England so may have died in Argentina
Isabella is first found in 1920 on the passenger lists so William may possibly have died between 1910-1920

Hello again,
I've found a tree with Charles Edward Connon in it.
He was born 16 Aug 1929 in Nottingham, and died 4 Aug 2007 in Buenos Aires. It also gives the details of his wife (now deceased) who he married in 1955.
I have sent a message to the owner of the tree so will hopefully get a reply.

Hugh Taylor Connon came back to the UK on 19th Nov 1942 onboard the Highland Princess, travelling from Buenos Aires in to the port of Belfast.
He was 37 and of 78 Chesterfield Road Kings Heath Birmingham. He was an employee.
Maybe the rest of the family were still out there and he'd been to visit?

I was thinking it is interesting that Hugh sailed back to Ireland during WW2.
Although Ireland was neutral, this must still have been a dangerous trip to take.
You wouldn't think he would come back to Britain during those years unless he really needed to.
-
There is a Hugo Connon (b.1905) setting sail from London to Buenos Aires on 26 Sep 1946.
So he seems to have returned to Britain for the duration of the war.

Hi Richard,
I posted the last message before yours.
My interest in this family is that William Connon who married Isabella Stephenson/Stevenson was the son of Jane Burr from my family.
I have corresponded quite a bit over the years with "Windsor87" - he is a descendant of William Connon's next brother, George Connon (1867 - 1909).
There is too much explanation to try and include on this message Board.
However, if you go to the following link and click on my name, you will get my email address and I will send a detailed email to you

Hello Richard, great to hear from you.
I started this thread because I was having some difficulty tracking down William Connon (b.1865), who was the brother of my great great grandfather, George Connon. George and William were only 2 of 24 children of William Connon Snr (1841-1915).
I still don't know what became of William Connon (b.1865) - only that his family emigrated to Argentina. I have no idea if he emigrated, or if he died before his family moved. Would you know anything about the family emigration (granted it was 100 years ago)?
regards
Michael

Hello Richard,
Still looking forward to hearing the story of the Argentine Connons.

Hi
You have definitely been on the right track in search of William Connon's descendants, including myself. There are 29 currently living, scattered about USA, Ireland, Canada, Argentina and Spain.
HOWEVER, William himself abandoned his wife Isabella and the 4 children at some time before the year 1908. They never saw him again, and moved, without him, to Argentina. It is believed he went to live first in Canada and then the USA where he apparently settled in the area of Chicago. So quite probably there are more of his descendants via that connection.
Another bit of gossip is that William married 15-yr-old Isabella in 1894, six weeks before the birth of their first son.
-
Hello Franca,
Thanks for your reply.
Who would've thought it!? Another scoundrel amongst the Connon family!
Thanks for the information - very interesting - although I fear this may make it more difficult to track down William himself. No wonder he has been one of these people who seem to drop off the face of the planet.
How are you connected to William? Do you know Richard?
regards

Dear Windsor87, I have just registered with Roots because I am looking for news of Eddie and Jaqueline Connon, address Arenales 1722 Martinez, Buenos Aires. We knew them in Venezuela in the 1960s and Jacqueline was godmother to one of our twin sons. It seems from your post that they are dead, but I should love know more and be able to get in touch with one of their children. Having just joined Roots, I have to post twice more before you can reply. Here's hoping. Orchard Robin
