Could someone please set me straight on this
I have an ancestor who is recorded as Margaret AUCHINLECK in OPR marriages 1773, parish of Dailly, but is Margaret AFLECK in OPR births of her children 1778 & 1780, parish of Colmonell
Are AFLECK and AUCHINLECK different spellings of the same surname?
If so, how is this possible?

Barb, Black's Surnames gives two origins for Affleck, one lot come from Angus, hereditary armour bearers to the earls of Crawford, and the Ayrshire Afflecks from the barony of Auchinleck.
Giving surnames an abreviated form is common in Scotland. Here the name was eventually written as it was pronounced. Another example is Flucker (carefull!) a variant of Flockhart. Skoosh.

The two names are the same, just varient spellings.

Thank you both so much for clearing this up. From a distance of 12,000 km it seemed unlikely that they were the same name.
Skoosh, you mentioned that abbreviated forms are common in Scotland. Can you suggest a source for checking out variants of other surnames?

Barb, Black's, "Surnames of Scotland", is the standard work on this, thick book, still in print.
Skoosh.

Fleck (in Scotland only) is also another common variation. The Leck(e)s in Dunbarton also appear to descend from Auchinlecks.
