Title: Mullaghglass
Post by: Westozi on Sunday 22 May 11 09:49 BST (UK)
My ancestor Charles Truesdale migrated to Australia in 1844 from Mullaghglass, Co. Armagh.  I've tried looking for photos of this town on the internet but can't find any.  Does anyone live there or nearby who could take a photo or two for me?  If not of Mullaghglass then of the Presbyterian Church in Drumbanagher?  The Minister from this church, Rev Robert McClean, was on of the people who gave Charles a reference to enable him to migrate.  Thanks heaps :)
Ann

First, here's a picture of the church-

Mullaghglass can be the name of the townland or the village (which confusingly seems to be in the townland of Latt)-

This is the only thing that comes up for the area on Geograph website- even Google Streetview doesn't have that area covered-

There were two Trousdales living in Mullaghglass Townland in Killevy Parish.  This is an extract from Griffiths Valuation of Ireland taken in 1864.

Trousdale            Charles            Mullaghglass                            Killevy     Armagh
Trousdale            John               Mullaghglass                            Killevy     Armagh

Looks as if there were still family living there then.  Could this Charles be his father??

How exciting to find someone else with Truesdale in their family tree!  :D  However I don't think the Charles you found in the Griffin Valuation was my Charles' father as he says on his migration papers (1843) that his mother's name is Ann and that she is a widow.  It does seem that Charles and John are family names as I've found two people of that name in the list of Armagh Yeomanry (1798-1831) and there was a Charles Trewsdale on the Armagh flax growers list of 1796. I'm the gggranddaughter of John Truesdale and Mary Brown. I'm just starting to research my Irish roots and haven't gotten far yet, other than discovering that John and Mary were married in Ballymore, county Armagh in 1861 and that their fathers were William Truesdale and William Brown. I've found that William Brown was from Mullaghglass, no luck yet on William Truesdale. I'm wondering if we are related on the Truesdale side. Any idea about that?

Hello there.  Not sure is there is a connection.  What I know for sure is that one Charles Truesdale migrated to Australia from Mullaghglass in 1843.  His mother's name was Ann and she was a widow.  I think Charles' father's name was also Charles but I'm not sure and I don't know if 'my' Charles had any siblings. That's fascinating that you have a Brown connection as Charles married Jane Brown in Sydney in 1844 - Jane was born in Newry. (I know, it's a common name and probably only coincidence!)  Have you seen the list of Armagh Yeomanry (1798-1831)? That lists Charles and John Truesdale.  Regards, Ann

Hello Ariesmagic
I wish I knew more about the Truesdale family, especially my ancestor Charles' siblings.  That might help us get a better picture of the family and 'join the dots' so to speak.  But thanks for getting in touch.  Are you in Ireland?  Do you have photos of Mullaghglass?
Regards
Ann

Hi, I am a Truesdale, I lived in Mullaghglass until I was 8 years old. My Father was William, my grandfather and great grandfather were all called John Truesdale. The family farm that had been in the Truesdale family for hundreds of years was in Mullaghglass. Attached is a picture of the 1911 cencus showing my great grandfather and grandfather... Maybe my great grandfather John was a brother of Charles he would have been born in 1842

Thank you Kiltaglassan and IanT1967
So interesting to know that the Truesdale family had a family farm in Mullaghglass for hundreds of years.  My relative Charles was no doubt just one of a large family who wish to find his fortune elsewhere.  He did end up on the goldfields in Victoria eventually (but didn't make his fortune!).
Goodness gracious; I've used all sorts of variations on the Truesdale name in my searches but would never have thought to look for "Fruesdal!!)
I did eventually get to Ireland and grabbed a taxi in Newry to take me out to see the church at Mullaghglass - although the taxi driver had to ask all his fellow drivers if anyone had ever heard of the place lol - and I was able to take a few photographs
Thanks again everyone
Ann

Well, we were the last remaining Truesdales in Mullaghglass, and left in 1976 and moved to England...
