Hello,
I could use some opinions on a marriage record(McCormack/Cleary), we have just come across for my gggrandfather in 1848. His hometown is listed as Milane/Kings County. The only Milane I can find is in Cork. I have hit SeanRuad, with no luck. Is there anything that phonetically sounds like Milane that could be in Kings, or is there one that I am not seeing? Thanks very much in advance, all input is most welcome and greatly appreciated.

Hello Jean,
I tried SeanRuad to see if I could come up with some suggestions. Just putting an M at the beginning and looking at a long list of places did not help. I then tried http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm - with the name McCormack and then entered Cleary as the second name. That gave another very lengthy list of results.
I've had another look at SeanRuad with " ne " at the end. Kilmaine appeared on that list. There are so many common letters in the two words and the ending sounds very much the same. I am just wondering.....
Best Wishes,
Christopher

Thanks very much Christopher, I'll see if that leads anywhere. The marriage actually took place in Canada. I had believed both were from Tipperary, until this record . ???

Hi there I have also just started to trace my McCormack roots in Offlay and these were from Tullamore ( Parish Kilbride, Barony Ballycowan)
Good luck with your search I will post again if I come across anything which I think may help.

Jean,
A couple of thoughts out of left field and probably irrelevant but ... Perhaps Christopher can say something about pronunciation.
A couple of townlands in Offaly (Kings) struck me:
Meelaghans
Mullanafawnia
A Google for the second one produces an alternative namely:
Muileann na Fáine
And it seems that 'muileann' simply means 'mill'.

Hi Folks,
I may be corrected if a Gaelic speaker notices my efforts.
I attended the Irish language class at school but the tunnel between my ears was well used.
Phonetic Pronunciation
Meelaghans Meal ach anns
Mullanafawnia Mullan na Fawn Ya

Just a thought : Possible mis-reading of the first letter ??
--There IS a place called Killane, in Edenderry, Co Offaly.
