Title: Philip Rodney NIGHTINGALE Capt/Lt Col/Major OBE
Post by: bendywendy on Saturday 04 June 11 14:30 BST (UK)
Can anyone help with the living relatives of Philip Rodney Nightingale and his wife Annie Barnard Pierce.
Did they have a dau Margaret E Nightingale (*)?? and 2 sons Michael D and Robert F ??

P R Nightingale was born 1896 Horsforth, Yorkshire son to John & Louisa Nightingale, he also had a sister
Florence Annie a little older than him. His father John was a Medical Practioner.  They lived at The Green, Horsforth, W. Yorks.

P R Nightingale was a Cadet/Lt Col/Major during his army career in WW1 & WW2. He was made an OBE possibly WW2.

I know he spent time in Australia and I think he may have lived in Jersey??

He wrote the book  A History of the East Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of York's Own) in the War of 1939-45  as Lt Col P R Nightingale  OBE.

I have found a Will of same name in Jersey Heritage, but as I don't live anywhere near Jersey I don't know if this is the same person, if anyone could help with this I do have the info.

Someone overseas has found something of his and would like to return it to his relatives

Kind regards
bendywendy

(*)Moderator Comment: recent date and place of birth removed as this person could still be alive- please remember not to post details of anyone who could still be living.
I am very sorry abt that, it just didn't occur to me at the time, thanks for removing

Hi Cando
Yes, this is the lady I am in contact with.

Jersey
Can anyone help with accessing the following at the Jersey Heritage, I have emailed them to ask if they could give some details, but the Auto Reply states it could be sometime before someone reads it.

I have just googled this address

La Vallette, Mont Cambrai, Millbrook and it is showing as being in Pennsylvania, USA

can anyone in Jersey confirm if this address exists/ed in Jersey itself, otherwise I cannot understand
why his Will will be in the Jersey Heritage archives??

By what has been found so far about him, there dosen't appear to be another of same name.

Yes that address does exist in Jersey. If you go back to the Jersey Heritage site and instead of searching under names you search under places you will see that in 1941 the occupants were Arthur and Mary Ann Le Rossignol, so a probable tie in there with Wilfred Le Rossignol.

The fact that the Jersey Archive holds a copy of P R Nightingale's will means that probate must have been granted in Jersey. This does not necessarily mean that he lived here but he must at least have either owned property or had bank accounts in the island.

I can look at the will later this week but the Archive is only open Tues - Thurs which is probably why you got an automated response.

Thank you jerseylily,
That is great info and ties in with what I found, although as yet I don't know how these two Nightingale fella's are related.
Cando from Aus board thinks she has found something in America, so it looks likely that these two places are linked together somehow, hopefully the Will may hold the answers to many questions.
I am thinking along the line of bank accounts etc..

I have received a reply from The Pioneer, who are the website for the Royal Pioneer Corps Association.
It is detailed with various pieces of information, but, as I am not a family member/NEXT OF KIN certain personal
pieces of information cannot be released, which is a pity because it would fill in the gaps and give
other important information.
Nethertheless, this is well written and does clarify some things that have been found via us Rootchatters.
I am not going to transcribe or copy any part of this report until I have asked the author if I have permission
to do so.
I did give The Pioneer the link to this thread so they are aware of what we have found etc..

IF THE NEAREST NEXT OF KIN IS FOUND AND THEY WOULD LIKE THE INFORMATION INC THE PERSONAL INFO,
I CAN PUT HIM/HER IN CONTACT WITH THIS PERSON WHO HOLDS THIS INFORMATION - BUT THEY MAY HAVE TO
PROVE THEIR "NEXT OF KINSHIP" TO PRN.

I've now had a look at the will and this is the gist of its contents. This is a will of moveable property, not real estate, which would have been in a separate will.

He confirms that he he is Philip Rodney Nightingale of La Valette and that he is a retired colonel in Her Majesty's army. He also declares that he is domiciled in the island of Jersey  and intends to spend the remainder of his days here.

'I give and bequeath all my estate whatsoever and wheresoever (save and except real estate) unto my wife Anne Barnard Nightingale (née Pierce) and in the event of her predeceasing me then the same shall pass to my 2 children.' I have the names of the children, a boy and a girl, and will send them by PM as they could still be alive.

He also desires that a sum not exceeding £50 be given to his 3 godchildren.

The will is dated 24/2/1956 and he appears to have died in 1962.

I also had a look at the Land Registry and he seems to have bought La Vallette in 1951 from Lillie Nicolle Le Rossignol. She was the daughter of Alfred Philip Le Rossignol and he was the son of John Nightingale. Looking at the census returns Lillie was the sister of Arthur Le Rossignol who was living in the house duriing the German Occupation.

Clearing out my mother's flat after her death in 2012 we came across an old folder with some water colour drawings made in Burma in 1943 by Major PR Nightingale OBE. Each water colour has text on the back describing was is going on in each picture.  We would like to pass on to any living relative.  Has your research be fruitful?  My father was also in Burma and lived in Jersey until his death in 1994.  He was an active member of the Burma Star Association.  Why these drawings were in possession is not known.

Hi Curious53
Sorry, as yet no known relatives have been located.
According to a message on the other link for Kent his wife returned to Australia after her
husbands death, it states they had no children.
What I would suggest is that you consider donating the file and contents to a library of his home
town of Horsforth, Yorkshire. His father was also a GP at Horsforth too.

Thank you for that.  We had been in touch with The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire Museum before I came across your investigations, they are happy to take them off our hands so will go a head with gifting to them.
