Title: Hollands / Cresswells of Belper/Marehay

Hi - first time poster and hoping someone can help out.

I'm trying to trace the parents of  Ellen Holland, born c.1845 in Belper? married to John Cresswell of Denby.

I know Ellens mother was called Hannah and was born around 1833.  I believe the Hollands may have been a circus family or gypsies?

There's something not quite right!.

You have Ellen born around 1845, but her mother was only born in 1833 which would have made her 12!.

I know!

Those are the dates of birth taken from the 1911 cesus....give or take a few years, but yes Hannah must have been 12 or there abouts.

You say that Ellen's name was Holland?..... are you sure it's not Hulland? married 1876?

Here is the census reference to find the family on the 1861, hope you have access ?

1861 = RG9/ Piece/ 2512/Folio: 11/ Page16 - Marehay, Ripley....... parents William & Hannah Hulland

You've def found the right people, Hulland/Holland - could the name have been copied down wrong at some point?

Have spoken to my father-in-law and he said his Grandmother was def Ellen Holland - could be the accent 'ulland!

Here are some of the family in 1851 - HO107/ Piece2145/Folio 88/ Page24 - Ripley, Derbyshire

It looks like William's mother remarried to William FOX, although I can't see a marriage for them at the moment and I now see they were next door to William in 1861 = see 1861 reference on reply 4

Baptisms at Heage - parents; JOSEPH & HANNAH - fathers occupation = Collier
MARTHA HULLAND - 7th Dec 1828
WILLIAM HULLAND - 26th Sept 1830
JOSEPH HOLLAND - 21st Oct 1832

The Derby Mercury - Wednesday, August 1, 1832

Inquest at Heage - On Monday se'night, JOSEPH HOLLAND and GEORGE HAWKINS descended a coal shaft at Morley Park, for the purpose of going to work, Holland went down first, and Hawkins having some suspicion that something was amiss, immediately followed him, and they were both suffocated by the black damp. Efforts were made to extricate the sufferers, but the persons who went into the pit were obliged to return , and it was not until eleven o'clock that the bodies could be got out.
An inquest was held before Mr. Whiston, jun, Coroner, at Heage, on Tuesday, and a verdict of "accidental death" returned.

Have found out the Hollands are/were a large gypsy family - father-in-law pleased to know that what was long a family myth is confirmed...I hope!

Am in Kent and have been researching my mothers family - Artertons from Walsham and have now branched out into the other halfs family.

I'll def have to investigate the newspaper archive.

I am researching my father's family ARTERTON - latterly lived in Kent (Gravesend/Northfleet are) but originally from Norfolk (Brampton, Aylsham and more).  Gt Grandfather GEORGE WILLIAM ARTERTON - does anyone have a connection ?

Yes, there is an Arterton connection with Gravesend/Northfleet, I'll have to dig out the paperwork for it.

Hi! I'm currently researching William Hulland too. I have a family member who tells me he was a showman, but the details are lacking and the census returns don't offer any support. Any info would be great!
