Hi everyone,
I am looking for any descendants of Charles Neale and his first wife, Emma née ROBERTS.
Charles was baptized on 12 August 1821 (ADDED: although he was was born on 22 October 1816) in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark SRY, the son of Benjamin and Ann NEALE of George Street/Kent Street. Benjamin Neale was a bricklayer.
In March 1843 Charles, a French Clog Maker of full age residing at St George Street, married Emma ROBERTS at Trinity Church, Parish of St Mary Newington SRY. Emma was a spinster of full age residing at 6 Valentine Place. His father was Benjamin NEALE, a bricklayer and her father was Thomas ROBERTS, a baker.
In 1861 Charles and Emma were living at 41 Great Dover Street, Newington SRY with their five children:
1. Charles born c’1848
2. Benjamin born c’1850
3. Elizabeth born c’1855
4. Alfred born c’1858
5. William born c’1860
In 1871 Charles appeared in the UK census as a widower. FreeBMD lists the death of an Emma Neale at Lambeth in 1867 who might be his wife.
In March 1872 Charles married again, to Sarah RILEY (née ELLERKER), a widow, born at Beverley ERY in 1814. The marriage took place at Trinity Church in the Parish of St Mary, Newington SRY. Charles described himself as a shoemaker of 6 Dover Road. They did not have any children.
In the 1881 UK Census Charles and Sarah were living at 3 Ravensbourne Road, Bromley KEN. Charles was a boot and shoe merchant. Contemporary town directories for Bromley don’t list Charles in the commercial section so it seems that he had probably retired to live in Bromley.
http://archive.library.bromley.gov.uk/dserve/Commercialstreetdirectories.htm
In the same census Charles’s eldest son Charles was a boot manufacturer living with his wife Mary and their children at Bexley KEN, and on the night of the 1881 census his brother Alfred, a solicitor, was visiting them.
Charles did not appear in the 1891 census and I suspect that he was the Charles NEALE who died at Lambeth in 1883, aged 63.
Sarah NEALE continued to reside at 3 Ravensbourne Road, Bromley until her death in December 1900. The informant for her death was her step-son Charles NEALE who lived at 3 Elmfield Park, Bromley.
Can anyone help me find when and where Charles NEALE died and was buried, where he operated his business or help me trace any descendants?

Charles NEALE of 3 Ravensbourne Rd, Bromley and of 52 Southwark Bridge Rd, Surrey boot and shoe merchant died 20 Jan 1892 at Camberwell House, Peckham, Surrey. Probate granted London 26 Feb to Alfred NEALE solicitor and Benjamin NEALE boot and shoe merchant £15727. Camberwell House was a private lunatic asylum.
That would explain why Sarah is listed as "wife" and "married" at the time of the 1891 censu then. There is indeed a Charles NEALE patient resident there (no further information given) at the time of the 1891 census. I didn't make a note of the page number but found him by scrolling through - RG12/472 folios 159-170
You can apply for a copy of the will by post from http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm for £5.
Charles appears in an 1891 directory for 52 Southwark Bridge Rd whilst Benjamin NEALE is listed by 1895 http://www.historicaldirectories.org

Hi Casalguidi,
Thank you very much, this is brilliant stuff! ;D And you've saved me from buying the wrong death certificate. ;D ;D
I had looked for a probate but my cut-off year was 1891 ::) Sad to see that Charles ended up in a lunatic asylum. I wonder why?
His second wife Sarah had suffered from dementia for twenty years at the time of her death in 1900.
I'll follow up on your information and also order Charles's will.
Thanks again,

There are a couple of Emma NEALE deaths in St George Southwark in Jun qtr 1846 and Mar qtr 1847.
Wondering if there were two Emma's to Charles and Emma, as there is a birth in Jun qtr 1844, which is the one I found the baptism of before, and then one in Sep 1846. Fits datewise.
See that Charles baptism in 1821 gives his birthdate as 22 Oct 1816 if you did not already have it. Would fit more with being 74 in 1892

Thanks Ian,
Thaanks again, I've edited my original post to include his date of birth.
I'll have a look for the second Emma you mention.

Hi casalguidi,
You said in your first reply that, "There is indeed a Charles NEALE patient resident [at Camberwell House] ... at the time of the 1891 census. I didn't make a note of the page number but found him by scrolling through - RG12/472 folios 159-170."
I finally got to a library and found the folio pages you refered to above, but could not find a Charles NEALE. I note that several dozen patients were listed only by their initials, but none matched Charles Neale either.
Any chance you could direct me further? My apologies for being obtuse.

It's RG12/472 folio 165 page 14 - he's the first one listed on the page.
If you have access to a search feature, search for Edgar MAYHEW age 35 in Camberwell ............... he's next on the list.

Thank you, I'll go back and look again.

I've found it, thanks Casalguidi. :D
Don't know how I missed it but I might have hit the Next Page button twice.
Now to wait for his death certificate to arrive to discover the cause of death. Why was he insane (or considered so)?

I received Charles' death certificate yesterday.
He died on 20 January 1892 at Camberwell House aged 74 and was described as a shoe merchant of Bromley, Kent. Causes of death were: Morbis Cordis-several years; Bronchitis-3 months; and Diabetes. The informant was W.E. FREE, present at the death, of Camberwell House Lunatic Asylum.
Morbis Cordis is an archaic term for heart disease.

Clearly quite a sick man medically but unfortunately no clues as to why he had been commited to camberwell House.
Thanks to everyone for their help. ;D

I am researching my mother's (Peggy Neale) family She was the daughter of Benjamin Alfred Neale and Beatrice Payne. I was unclear from the thread as to the parents of the Charles Neale cited below. Can you offer any help?
Thanks Much!

Hi MikeInDavis,
My apologies, I didn't receive a notification of your reply to the topic.
If you're still around I'd like to discuss the family with you.
Could you reply and I'll send you what information I have by PM (Personal Message).

Hi, so obviously this is a very old thread, but I just wanted to let you know that I am the granddaughter of Charles Alfred Neale (who was son of Charles Goodall Neale, grandson of Charles Edward Neale and great grandson of Charles Neale b1821). Sadly as my grandfather died before I was born, I know very little about this line of my family other than what I have found on Ancestry.
All the best, Georgia

Hi Georgia, and welcome to RootsChat :)
I have always hoped that a NEALE descendant might see this topic and get in touch, so it's great to hear from you.
If you can post twice more to this topic (just a smiley in each post will do) I will be able to send you a Personal Message with my email address and we can exchange information.
Regards,
