Title: Cregan Shanagolden
Post by: Pastmagic on Wednesday 22 June 11 13:45 BST (UK)
Trying to help a friend who lives in the UK with her family tree.

Any advice or info welcome!

Dr. Jeremiah Kevin Cregan of Co. Limerick, Dublin and Manchester has a death cert which says he was born in 1916. Family Lore has it that he was from the Adare area of Co. Limerick. His marriage cert of 1943 gives his father as Jeremiah Cregan, farmer. He is known to have siblings Dennis, a Dentist in Dublin, Brid and  a Con believed to have emmigrated to the USA.

The only birth cert I can find is one for Jermiah Cregan born 25th October 1916 at "Moneavagha" (Rathkeale DED Limerick). There is another one in 1909, but I have more or less ruled that one out, for the moment. The 1911 census for "Monavaha"
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Shanagolden/Monavaha/642878/
has a household which fits some of the details.

This gives a Jeremiah with a wife Margaret and I have obtained a marriage cert which seems to relate to them: 30 June 1909, Jeremiah Cregan Shanagolden to Margaret Hanly of Ballinvira, Croagh, his father John Cregan, hers John Hanly. She fits in with the census details for Hanley Croagh in both 1911 and 1901.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Limerick/Croagh/Ballinvira/1513386/

where they are living in a very large house and own 3 adjacent ones.....

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Croagh/Ballinvira/642092/

because a baptism  for a Margaret Hanley 04-Feb-1878 Croagh gives her mother as Bridget Fizgerald. (rootsireland record). I have locted a possible marriage for Bridget and John in IGI but have not got it yet.

Back to Jeremiah - having problems with his birth as there are a number of options. His wedding cert gives John Cregan as his father, but the only cert I can find has a Dennis. Griffiths has a Jeremiah & Dennis owning a fair bit of land in Monavaha, but no John.

As Clough is only 3 miles from Adare, I feel I am on the right rack, but need help at this point.

I don't know the area, and there don't seem to be any online grave records yet.

All help greatfully recieved!

Sorry if this is a bit long winded...PM

Hello there
I've been researching my mothers family,
She is of the Cregans of Monavaha, Shanagolden.
Dr J Cregan is her brother, & her name was Margaret.
The Cregan family grave is located in Rathkeale churchyard
& the Hanly family grave is very nearby in said churchyard.
I'd be interested to know anything regarding
Dr Cregans family in Manchester, so I would
be grateful if you can furnish me with any information.
Best Regards
JP Reynolds

Hello JpReynolds,

Thank you for your reply. I do have some info about Dr. Cregan in Manchester, but as it concerns living people, under the rootschat sytem they can't be mentioned in a message to protect privacy, so we will have to exchange two more messages from you to here so that I can then send you a personal message. Hope this makes sense!

Very interested to note he had a sister Margaret.

Hello again PM
That's totally understandable, regarding privacy matters.
Well I shall tell you that Maryvale House in Shanagolden,
the Cregans residence no longer exists, however Dr Cregans
mother Margaret who hailed from Ballinvira House in Croagh
parish in still in existence, a quite substantial house, still
occupied to this day. The Dr's grandmother Bridget Hanly
was Fitzgerald, a family of note, her Grandfather Edward was
made a Freeman of Limerick in 1792. The Fitzgerald family tomb
is to be found in Croagh Abbey. Lastly, for the time being,
the Cregan Family originated in the townland of Dually, approx'
5 miles south of Newcastlewest.
Hope this helps the research, look forward in hearing from you
Regards, JP

Hello again
Glad to know that those bits of information
were of use. I would be interested hearing
more about Dr Cregans family, long lost
cousins.
Also Dr Cregan is commemorated on a
plaque at the Family grave, he passed away
in the mid 60's.
Anyhow, all the Best

Thank you JP, I have sent you a message. I had a quick look for the Edward Fizgerald and found the following:

On Thursday last, at his seat, Ballinvira, Co.

Just in case anyone else is researching this family. The two deaths are very close together, wonder if these two men are related?

Would you know these Fitzgeralds the same Fitzgerald as Bridget's family?

A document on the Limerick Library website has this death notice.
Ennis Chronicle, Saturday 17 Sept 1808.
Died last Wednesday on George’s Quay, Limerick, Mrs Fitzgerald, widow of the late John Fitzgerald of Ballysally, Co. Limerick and sister of Col Leake, late of Rathkeale Abbey. The Clare Journal adds her age as 74 years, therefore born circa 1734.

Ann Leake and John Fitzgerald married 20 Nov 1752 at Rathkeale (Church of Ireland).   On Rootsireland it says John Fitzgerald is from Croagh and Ann is from Rathkeale.

Hi,
My father was Michael Bernard Cregan born in 1919 in Shanagolden, Co. Limerick. He had  brothers Denis and Con(USA) and sister Margret. His father was Jeremiah a farmer and Mother Margaret nee Hanley. They are both buried in the family grave at Rathkeale.
He went to school at St Colmans college Fermoy.
I have just started trying to find out about his family and came upon the posts on RootsChat and would be very interested in any information that is available about his family.

I'm having the same problem finding any births for the Cregan's as PastMagic had back in 2011 despite images of Civil Registration birth Certs coming online since than.
There is however a marriage of a John Cregan on the same page as a Margaret McNamara in 1876 which might be the parents. Image not online yet.
Both the marriage and possible Baptisims of the children are too late for the Rathkeale Parish Register on the NLI site.
