Title: 3 McKinnon brothers from Mull
Post by: fifer1947 on Friday 24 June 11 09:16 BST (UK)
Trying to trace the whereabouts of the last 3 of a family 8 they are:

John McKinnon bn abt 1855 Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon (Scoor or Bunessan, Isle of Mull on later census entries) he was witness to his sister's marriage 1888 Glasgow.  He was at his brother and family in 13 Elliot St, Anderston, Glasgow on the 1891 census as a Joiner age 33, he may have married.

Malcolm McKinnon bn 01 Aug 1859 same place last known at home 1871 census, nothing further known.

Neil McKinnon bn 12 Nov 1861 same place also last known at home 1871 census, nothing further known.

I believe at least one of them emigrated, possibly to Australia.  Their parents were Archibald McKinnon and Catherine McLean.

Any clues to their whereabouts on subsequent census etc very gratefully received!  ;D  Thank you!

Consolidating your McKinnons now I see!

Could this be Malcolm I wonder in 1881:

Malcolm McKinnon, 21, medical student, b. Kilfinchen, Argyleshire
Address: 498 St Vincent St, Glasgow Kelvin

This Malcolm looks to be lodging with a Barrowman family.

Or there is this entry (might fit with brother John also being a joiner by trade):

Flora McKinnon 28 b. Mull
Malcolm McKinnon 21, brother , joiner b. Mull

Address: 303 Argyle St, Blythswood Glasgow

Monica

Added: See there was a sister Flora born c. 1850, so likely second entry above?

Monica I think you've done it again!  ;D

Flora was a very sad case, she married a Duncan Smith in 1888 and died just 2 years later in 1890 following a Placenta Previa haemorrage.  So to find her and Malcolm together in 1881 and in the same district as Donald and his wife is probably spot on for this family.

This is the first census I have for either of them as Flora couldn't make up her mind what age she was!  :P

Thank you very much I can now download the census data which should prove they are brother and sister.  ;D

I've found Neil M(a)cKinnon age 19 as a farm servant in the same parish as his parents 1881, but still searching for him and Malcolm in 1891 and subsequent census.

They are hard to find in later censuses and I am struggling like you have been  :-\ The only new thing I am seeing is perhaps this entry for John in 1901, but all a bit of a guess unfortunately (no children's names to help, age a couple of years out etc.):

John Mckinnon 42, house joiner b. Bunessan (?spl) Mull, Argyllshire
Jessie Mckinnon 36, wife b. Glasgow

Address: 23 Caird Drive, Partick/Govan

That looks good Monica I'll check that one out.  Many thanks.   ;D  I'm sure that's him they never were very good with their ages!  As you say without children it's very difficult to find this family.  :-[  There were 4 possible marriages in Glasgow for John so this information at least gives me a spouse's first name to check too.

Just realised that Flora was on the 1851 census age 2.  So 5 years older than most databases give and nearly 9 years older than the 31 she gave on her marriage cert, or at her death in 1890 age given was 37 - clearly she was 40/1.

I did find a Malcolm right age on Bute, Rothesay but on checking back there is a corresponding birth.

I noticed on the Mull Genealogy database the submitter on some data had an Australian email addy, so thought I might email her and ask her what her connection is.

Got John on the 1911 with Jessie 11 years married no children.    ::)

Got the marriage too in 1899 from his brothers address to Jessie Barr at Caird Avenue.

Bingo!

So that's John sorted  ;D

John died in 1922 and on his death cert it states he was married twice!  First time to Mary Ann McDonald now to find first marriage LOL  ;D

Got it!  He married in 1897 (brother Neil witness) she must have died very soon after that as he remarried in 1899.

Great to be able to tie up John's 1st marriage and Neil present as witness.

Costing me a fortune on SP though  :D

When and where was John's first marriage (to try and get a timeline for Neil)?

Monica

Added: Just seen first marriage was 1897  :P So, brother Neil in Scotland around that time. Not that we can easily find him on the censuses!

I think I've found Neil in 1911 census has a Neil McKinnon Anderston District of Glasgow (age 50) which is exactly right, very close to Donald's family too.

That entry for Neil sounds promising.

Ok...Malcolm...another possibility...taking him to the US  ::)

There is a Malcolm McKinnon showing in the US censuses from 1900 who married a Janet in the 1880s going by the births of their children. On the 1900 census, this Malcolm shows as a carpenter, married 15 years, with 6 children born/alive:

This is the household entry for 1900 in East Orange, Essex, New Jersey:

Malcolm Mckinnon 40 carpenter b. Scotland - birth date Aug 1859...it's a match!
Jenet Mckinnon 39 b. Scotland
Annie Mckinnon 14 b. Scotland
Catherine Mckinnon 13 b. Scotland
Flora Mckinnon 10 b. New Jersey
Archibald Mckinnon 9 b. New Jersey
Duncan Mckinnon 7 b. New Jersey
Malcolm Mckinnon 5 b. New Jersey

I think I've found Neil in 1911 census has a Neil McKinnon Anderston District of Glasgow (age 50) which is exactly right, very close to Donald's family too.

Now this one for Neil is weird!!

Born Lanarkshire according to the census BUT very young wife previous children AND a son Archibald!!  How likely is he??

ps I've just seen your post Monica that is a brillant find!!  So we have Malcolm too.  ;D

By 1911 Neil may have been in Lanarkshire for a long time, so perhaps not surprising he may have put that for his birth place by 1911. Fingers crossed so that we have all three brothers  :)

Regarding Malcolm and family in the US, their 1920 entry at Cambridge Street, East Orange, Essex, New Jersey::

Malcolm Mackinnon 60 carpenter
Jeanet Mackinnon 60
Flora Mackinnon 29 stenographer
Catharine V Mackinnon 31 retouching
Duncan B Mackinnon 26 plumber
Malcolm Mackinnon 24 artist

Monica

Added: Malcolm arrived in NY on 23 May 1887 on the 'Furnessia', a joiner b. 1859. I think wife and daughters followed the following year. Matches what is showing on their census entries in the US.

Found an 1885 marriage in Glasgow for a Malcolm McKinnon and Janet (on variants).  I'm going to check that one out, as it matches 15 years married per the US census.

Yes that is Malcolm's marriage in 1885 AND brother Thomas was a witness (ie he who never left Mull!)

Just going to spend some more @ SP to hunt for that marriage c1910 because I couldn't find a death entry for him there are so many Neil McKinnons in Glasgow  :-\

She was 23 in the census he was 50!  :o  His eldest son was 17  :P youngest Archibald 3 months!

Just checked that marriage and it's not him, though it does match the census.   :-\

Ok  :'( Thinking caps back on! The possible Australian angle that you mentioned before, where is this from?
Title: Re: 3 McKinnon brothers from Mull
Post by: fifer1947 on Saturday 25 June 11 14:44 BST (UK)
The Australian email is on Mull Genealogy for someone who has submitted material which relates to this family.  Some of it is inaccurate.  :P

To recap we have Donald, Flora, Gillean, John, Thomas, Malcolm and Alexander who is still single and home on Mull in 1911, which just leaves us with Neil.

Neil is on the 1881 census with Flora
He was a witness to John's marriage in 1897

Apart from that he's the invisible man!  :D

Fifer, hate to mention given you have already put down your 1 unit for this search, but given the names, might be good to search with a wildcard such as N*l *as Neil can show as Niel and then M*Kinn*n....

It goes like that. Like a good gambler (as if I would know  ::)) you have to know when to say STOP (for now!) with SP  8)

I'll keep looking through the transcripts.

Thank you Monica you are very kind and I am extremely grateful for your help.  :)

I have downloaded the image for Malcolm on the census 1900 NJ from Family Search site.

The 1900 US census is one of the best to have as it is the one with most information  :)  Malcolm Snr. is still alive in 1930 and they look to have remained living in East Orange, Essex, New Jersey. Both daughters show as unmarried:

Malcolm Mackinnon 70, carpenter
Janet Mackinnon 70
Catherine Mackinnon 42
Flora Mackinnon 39

That's great Monica thanks.  :)  I'm still searching for a date of death for him.  Google throws up some McKinnons still in East Orange, NJ, interestingly.

A death date might be hard to find. I think he will be born too soon to be included on the SSDI (www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=ssdi/search_ssdi.asp&clear_form=true). From experience of one, tracing a death in New Jersey can be complicated and hard to do  :-\ but hey, we are always optimists!

Hope this is not too late. I am fairly certain Neil MacKinnon was my great-grandfather, my grandmothers father. He married a Sarah Shirlaw in 1899 and is on the 1901 census but I could not trace him or his family anywhere on the 1911 census. He dies in 1918. He had 4 children - Margaret born around 1900, Catherine born 1902, Flora born around 1904 or 1905 and Archibald born 1909. They lived around the Glasgow area, Eastwood, Lanark and also on the south side of Glasgow. Flora was my grandmother but I cannot find her birth certificate although I could find certificates for all the other children. Flora marries my grandfather William Wilson in 1935, my dad (another William Wilson) being born in 1936. My Dad is an only child as am I. We did keep in touch with my grandmothers sisters and brother and their extended family when I was younger but have lost touch with them now. My grandmother was very proud of her MacKinnon ancestry and their connection to Mull.
