Samuel Copperwheat and wife Jane nee Speechly had the following children--
John bc 1833
Thomas bc 1833
William bc 1836
Robert bc 1838
George bc 1840
Alfred bc 1849
Elizabeth bc 1853.
I can find marriages for John,Thomas,William on Free Reg
Am still searching for the other siblings marriages or not, as the case may be.. However, Elizabeth appears on 2 Ancestry trees married to a George W Dolling. I personally can find no direct proof of this other than a BMD marriage for an Elizabeth CopperWAITE Dec Quarter 1869 to a George W Dolling Reg.Ampthill.
If someone has access to records that MAY show Elizabeth's marriage it would be interesting to see if it had father's name--'Samuel' and any witness names.
One tree has Eliz CopperWAITE married to George and the other tree has her down as CopperWHEAT married to George.
I'm afraid i always feel a bit 'wary' re info on these trees.
Thank you from poli :)

hey poli,
you are probably aware that transcriptions on census etc are littered with mistakes (spellings, names, dates and place of birth).
may i suggest that you trace the 1841/51/61 census copperwheat/waite (i am making assumptions here that you have not already done so) then 1871 for dolling.
this should help you to define the family line.
check parish records instead of bmd as banns provide the name of the father.
it may be necessary to obtain the cert based on the info you have, understandably an outlay that may not give you a return but you might be able to offload it through ths site.

I have checked some of the CopperWHEAT ones but will double check through CopperWAITE--thank you

Robert Copperwheat
Elizabeth Jackson Amptill 1861 Dec
Oddly enough i was contacted by another Copperwheat searcher who had Robert married to an Elizabeth but the 1871 census shows a Robert married with an 18 year old son and in the 1861 census he was still single --so unless the wife who was older had a child before marrying Robert ???
Thanks for finding it--appreciate all help with this family.. poli :)
p.s there are MANY Robert Copperwheats floating about Bedfordshire i find!

Hi Poli .....
He is consistant with born in 1838 Marston on each census even when home with mum in 1861.
2 possibles for Elizabeth Jackson...
1861 census for both .....
Isaac Jackson 20 hd m
Elizabeth Jackson 26 wi m
Ada Wooding dau u 3
Louisa Jackson 1 month
RG9/1002 F75 P15
HOWEVER... 1871 shows this family together still with Isaac as head but interesting that Wooding name appears with them and IGI shows Isaac Jackson married Elizabeth Wooding in May 1860.
NEXT we have
John French hd m 67 marston
Elizabeth French wi m 56 Biggleswade
Elizabeth Jackson dau u 26 Marston
George Jackson g/son u 8 Marston.
RG9/1002 F 91 P14
So could George be the 18 year old on 1871 with Robert & Elizabeth?
John French married Elizabeth Jackson in 1854 in Marston Moretaine. In 1851 census she is the "housekeeper" to John French all children listed as son / dau but she is not with John French in 1841...however...
baptism for 2 children one of which is Elizabeth b 1835 states...
extracted...
Elizabeth Jackson or French 11 Jan 1835
father John French
mother Elizabeth Jackson.
Maybe help maybe more confusing?

Hello Tazzie, you've dug up some interesting info here--
The second info re Elizabeth Jackson/French with an 8 year old son George in the 1861 could well be the 2 referred to in the 1871 census with Robert. the 1871 does have the 'son' as an E. Copperwheat but knowing what transcriptions are like the letters G and E could easily be just a hiccup. There are Woodings in the 1871 census also.
I shall look at these myself and i very much appreciate your time spent finding all this.
Half the problem when attempting to follow people in each census is the very fact the the Christian names hardly vary from family to family or generation after generation. My Copperwheats are filled to the brim with Mary Anns , Elizabeths, Roberts and Johns etc. ::) poli

Hi Poli ...
Chance to catch up and have a look at the other siblings ...
It seem Elizabeth married Edward William Dolling 28 Dec 1869 as I can see an Elizabeth Dolling born Marston in 1871 married to a William... so he may have prefered his middle name . Elizabeth dies in 1875 and he remarries in 1876.
George & Alfred are still in hiding but will look agaian after the school run.

Hello tazzie,
I've wondered about Alfred myself and i had a post on the very subject some time back. I'm 99% sure he is a Copperwheat turned Copperwaite but do not have absolute proof and it's interesting that you have gone down the same route that i did. I have added Alfred + Sarah Linnell to my lot but with question marks attached!!
As for George --died early on or just hell bent on being difficult.
I've spent hours over the last few days trying to check up on these two men and am in the same place i was months ago ::)
The Alfred who married Sarah Linnell had a son who was involved in a court case and i even sent off for the newspaper article. The printing is very unclear --whoever did the photocopying didn't make a very good job-- but i'm going to dig out the cuttings and go over them again to see if i can find any clues that escaped me before. I will keep you posted
Thank you for your time and interest. It does help when someone else looks for the same things as sometimes little bits of info pop up that weren't noticed by me before. poli

hi again poli
i think family tree's useful as they are, are the least of our problems.
transcriptions errors, phonetic communication and the acceptance of daft data such as silly names, by FindMyPast makes the census just as dodgy.
no relation to your research but i am looking for copperthwaite and have come up against cowperwaite as well as copperwheat and variations!
good luck with your search.

If it helps Elizabeth Copperwheat and Edward William Dolling were my Great great grandparents. I do have a photo of Elizabeth somewhere that was taken at some point before my Great grandfather, Alfred William Dolling was born.
I may be able to help you in the search for Alfred Copperwheat, however. He is indeed a Copperwheat turned Copperwaite and in the 1880 he applied for a copy of my Great grandfathers birth certificate (presumably for work or education given that it was 10 years after he was born) fortunately, when applying he gave his address as 67 Great Russell Street, Northampton.
I assume that, at the time my Great grandfather was staying with him, which would explain how he ended up in Northampton, having been born in Lidlington, Bedfordshire.
My apologies, I don't appear to be able to attach images to my post

Hi All.
Fortheadingley welcome to Rootschat. :)
You can post images by making a new topic on the Bedfordshire
board and title it maybe "Elizabeth Copperwaite".
We are not able to attach photographs on any County look up
request boards.
Merry Christmas All
