Title: Alfred James Bishop 1868 Swyre Dorset
Post by: dhhound on Saturday 02 July 11 16:39 BST (UK)
Hi, I'm confident the members of RootsChat will be able to help me.
Alfred James Bishop was born in Swyre, Dorset in 1868. He last appears in the censuses in 1891 as a footman for William Gilchrist, Australian Merchant, living at 200 Queens Gate E, London.  He is absent from the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
There is a marriage record to either Rosanna Smyth or Annie Alice Thornber in Kensington in Dec 1893. Whether this is the same man is unknown. There are two death records with that name in London  in Q3 1924 (Poplar), and Q3,1927 (Kensington).
I'm trying to determine the fact of his possible marriage and where he was in 1901 and 1911. Did he go to Australia possibly.
Thank you in advance if you can help.

Alfred James Bishop of 101 Clarendon Road, London W11, died on 10th August 1927 and was buried back in Swyre.

The 1893 marriage is looking more likely; it's worth buying the certificate.

Thank you for your help. I had cross posted this in the Australia forum as there was a chance he had emigrated. It appears he married Annie Thornber in Dec 1893, when their son was well on the way and who was born in Feb 1894. In the son's birth record their residence is given as 200 Queen's Gate, his place of work so it appears he had a very understanding employer. He is still missing from the 1901 census, although the son is listed in 1901 as living with Emma Bishop Clark, his aunt.  He went on to marry and have two sons whose descendents I have tracked to the 1970s

In the 1901 census his 1893 employer William Oswald Gilchrist is living at Oakley Hall, Deane, Basingstoke, Hampshire but neither Alfred or Annie Alice are on the servant list.
