Title: Fogorig, Fogo, Swinton Berwickshire
Post by: rindercella on Sunday 03 July 11 22:02 BST (UK)
Hi does anyone who is familiar with that area or has an old map  know if Fogorig (a farm no doubt) is still there or if not where it was?  Would appreciate any help.  Thanking you all in advance.

Fogorig is still there and is a big, good, farm (over 600 acres I think)  it is on the road from Berwick on Tweed to Greenlaw about 4 miles or so from Greenlaw..  Was farmed by R & G Young until the 1960's.

Have a look at the National Library of Scotlands website - they have a fantastic range of maps online especially the 25in (1850 - 1880) to the mile series which shows the buildings.  You can also see the modern farm buildings at the side of the road on Google street view.

I had ancestors called Gillie, Jenkinson, and Rentons who all worked on Fogo rig farm and also at the nearby Sisterpath farm.

Sisterpath has modern byres and outhouses, but Fogorig is pretty much as it would have been way back in older times.

The Kirk has an interesting cemetery. It has a part looked after by
the War Graves Commission, where commonwealth Airmen from WW2
are interred. My father told me they were men that were learning to fly the, then, new Spitfire aircraft that lost their lives in training.

I have some pictures of the Kirk

Here's my tuppenceworth,

The McLEAN family were at Sisterpath as Shepherds for many years (two generations)
they are related thru my wifes side McDOUGAL  and the HUNTER family.

Robert McLEAN died 1956 and his wife Margaret Hope YOUNG died 1961

Hi AliCam,
Welcome to rootschat,

My wife's cousin Elizabeth HUNTER was married to Bob McLean
a Shepherd at Sisterpath. Bob died in London during a heart operation.
As I recall is sister Isa was down with Bob and she also died leaving Lizbeth
in a terrible state.

I was under the impression Isa was single. How many other siblings were there
?.

You need to make one more post (such as answer this post) and we can
them use the Private Message to exchange details,

Yours Aye
Angus

I suspect that the War graves are for personnel who would have been based at Charterhall
aerodrome just to the East of Greenlaw.

I think i remember that both fighter and bomber/recon crews all trained there at one time or another during ww2.

The 'drome was a racetrack after the war. Jim Clark raced there. closed about 1960.

Hi Aitchscot,
I see you have Jenkinson ancestors.  I am trying to trace a Warrant Officer John Andrew Jenkinson who was killed in WW2 and is commemorated on the Leitholm war memorial, which is next door to Fogo.  Would he have any connections to you? Helen
