Title: Where is Glendinning?
Post by: NewRhi on Monday 04 July 11 00:55 BST (UK)
Hi there,
I have found some IGI records where the birthplace is listed as "Glendinning, Westerkirk, Dumfries, Scotland" and wondered where and what is Glendinning?  The record is from 1794.
Thank you

:)thanks, there looks like a nice place to stay there if I ever get a chance!  I still don't get it though(I mean was it a village/a farm/an estate???).  Maybe if someone local comes on the forum tomorrow they can explain it.  ???

Thomas Teford was born at Glendinning. Wiki has this to say:

Telford was born on 9 August 1757 at Glendinning, a hill farm 3 miles west of Eskdalemuir Kirk, in the rural parish of Westerkirk, in Eskdale, Dumfriesshire. His father John Telford, a shepherd, died soon after Thomas was born. Thomas was raised in poverty by his mother Janet Jackson (d.1794)

I also found these descriptions of the area in relation to Thomas Telford:

The hamlet of Westerkirk, with its parish church and school, lies in a narrow part of the valley, a few miles above Langholm. Westerkirk parish is long and narrow, its boundaries being the hill-tops on either side of the dale. It is about seven miles long and two broad, with a population of about 600 persons of all ages.

Telford's father was a herd on the sheep-farm of Glendinning. The farm consists of green hills, lying along the valley of the Meggat, a little burn, which descends from the moorlands on the east, and falls into the Esk near the hamlet of Westerkirk.

So ... it was a farm.  :)

It's highly likely that your family knew the Telfords.  :)

I have found Glendinning on this map:
http://maps.nls.uk/atlas/thomson/view/?rsid=74400172&sid=74400173&mid=555

You can zoom in and use the hand to move around the map. In the peach coloured parish area (Westerkirk) follow the river Meggotwater northwards. Glendinng is near the top of the parish, just to the left of the "T" of "Westerkirk". There appear to only be a few buildings marked on the map to denote Glendinning.

Compare the old map to google maps. On google maps I can see Jamestown, and Glendinning Burn, but I can't see any buildings where Glendinning is marked on the old map. Looks like isolated and beautiful countryside.

DGFHS have an original copy of the Crawford Survey Map of 1828.
It looks as if it is very similar to the source Ruskie refers to to.
Here is a snip showing Glendinning.  As Ruskie says the current OS maps do not show any buildings.

Hi Johnner Kid,
While searching for a map showing Glendinning I found a previous post of yours which referred to the Crawford map. I was just about to PM you to ask if you could find Glendinning, then I came across the map in my link. They look virtually the same don't they? I prefer the colour in the Crawford map though.  ;)

Oh my goodness!
Thank you very much!  The reason I'm asking is because I do think my family is related to Telford via his mother.  This is very exciting because the William Jackson I have the IGI record for(says he was born Glendinning 1794), I also have a copy of his obituary saying he was doubly related to Thomas Telford.  I've just reread it actually and it gives a lot of info, proving yet again you should work from the sources you already have.  Many thanks, and if anyone has anymore info on the family or area, I'd love to hear!
 ;D

That's all fitting together nicely for you NewRhi. How exciting.  ;D

Have you checked the OPR's on Scotland's People for your ancestors in case there is further information? Sometimes you get a little more than is on the IGI .... eg. for a start, if I were you I would get the OPR for William Jackson's 1794 baptism, and also any available OPR's for Janet Jackson (Thomas Telford's mother). With such a tiny community they are bound to be related - all you have to do is work out how.  ;)

This is interesting:

We visited Glendinning just a month ago. There's very little there: a small cairn as a Telford birthplace monument, Glendinning Farm itself, one house which is all that's left of the mining village of Jamestown; and that's about it. It is also at the very end of the road - except for a forestry track going further up the valley. There's a scatter of other houses /farms down the valley; and they'd have had to walk three or four miles down the valley to the church, where his dad is buried.  But it is beautiful, as well as lonely.  I can imagine Telford and others being keen to get away, or being delighted to stay!

I've attached pictures of the valley; and of his dad's grave in the Westerkirk burial ground.

Best wishes!  David

Welcome to rootschat David, and thank you for such a helpful first post. It looks like such beautiful country. Idyllic - I'd love to live there.  :)

Thanks for sharing the photos David, they're brilliant.  It really brings history to life when you can imagine the places people lived.  I'm hoping to visit the area too one day although I think I'll wait until after winter.   :)

My wife and I were there in 2004.  If you go from
Langholm to Craigcleuch and on to Westerkirk, there was a sign that pointed north to Glendinning Hope.  At the end of the road was a farm (Glendinning Hope).  The owner, when he found out that I was a Clendenon, invited me in and gave a real short tour of the place.  He pointed to a ravine to the east where they had been mining in the past,  He said it was now closed by the officials because of safety reasons.  He was very friendly,  It truly was a highlight!
