Have to go out for a short while but will be back soon.
Whow if this is true this is yet another fantastic piece for the family tree.

After having spent many enjoyable hours over many decades as a volunteer tennis administrator, (and former competitive player) this is the first time I have used my tennis referee’s handbook for family history purposes. I am delighted.
As at 31 March 1930, E F Moon of Qld was ranked Number 1 in the Rankings of Male tennis players in Australia (No. 2 was J Crawford from NSW, and No. 3 was H Hopman from NSW)
31 March 1931 E F Moon was ranked # 3
31 March 1932 E F Moon was ranked # 7 (equal with R O Cummings of Qld)
31 March 1933 E F Moon # 7
31 March 1934 E F Moon # 6
31 March 1935 E F Moon # 7
31 March 1936 E F Moon # 8
Australian Davis Cup Players
E F Moon represented Australia in 1930 .... Also in that year : J H Crawford, H C Hopman, J Willard.
In 1930 the Davis Cup Finals were in Paris and France defeated USA 4 rubbers to 1
Australian Championships (Lawn Tennis)
Mens Singles Winner 1930 E F Moon
Mixed Doubles Winners 1929 Miss D Akhurst and E F Moon
Mixed Doubles Winners 1934 Miss J Hartigan and E F Moon
Miss D Akhurst won the Womens Singles in 1925, 26, 28, 29, 30
Miss J Hartigan won the Womens Singles in 1933, 34, 36
Miss D Akhurst name also appears on the winners lists for various years in that era in Womens Doubles.
Australian Championships (Hardcourt)
E F Moon’s name does not appear on my list of winners of that title, perhaps because my earliest records for that event start at 1938.
Australasian Veterans Championships
E F Moon’s name does not appear on my list of winners at those titles; my lists start from 1971
Queensland Championships (my records go back to 1889)
Mens Singles Winner 1932 E F Moon.
As E F Moon represented Queensland, it is very likely that Tennis Queensland would have information about him. Here is the link to that organisation. http://www.tennis.com.au/qld/
Now, should I put my book that gave me that info back on my shelves for tennis, or find a place for it among my family history books ! What a wonderful dilemma. (it will go back with the tennis)
Many Cheers,
JM

You just never know where you'll find required information, JM!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Moon oops, my apologies to Sandra as this link is posted in earlier post.
Gar Moon !
Yes Dee, and Gerry,
I am "over the moon" so to write.
PS, he beat Mr Hopman in that 1930 final 6–3, 6–1, 6–3 .... that's such a fantastic score.

Here's more results for Mr Moon
http://m.australianopen.com/en_AU/event_guide/history/players/15355.html
Australian (Grasscourt) Championships Results
Singles Doubles Mixed Total
Matches Played 33 27 26 86
Matches Won 22 15 19 56
Matches Lost 11 12 7 30
Sets Won 58 37 26 121
Sets Lost 42 38 13 93
Games Won 502 370 212 1084
Games Lost 444 375 175 994
These are simply excellent results and extend over the years 1925 to 1939.
This was the era of the amateurs.... they paid their own way, found their own accomodation, food, clothing, equipment, and even strung their own racquets.
And never a coach in sight at their matches !!! Long creams, two eyelets in their tennis shoes, no drinks breaks, and everyone was Mr or Miss or Mrs. No tantrums on court .... no seats to sit down on, change of ends you simply walked to the other end ! Oh, in five set matches, there was a ten minute break after the third set. If you injured yourself, you simply walked to the net and shook hands to forfeit. Tennis was a SPORT and not an industry.

I am absolutely speechless which is something unusual for me . Only fellow researchers will understand how I feel today I really
have hit the jackpot this time . We only found out that my OH's grandfather was born in Victoria when my father in law died a
couple of years ago. When I first started I never in my wildest dreams imagined that I would find all this
information on the family . I was hoping to get BMD etc. but I have found mill owners in Victoria , tennis players wonder
what I will find when I start getting deeper into the Queensland side of the Gibson family.
Thanks again
Suzilad

You hit the jackpot .... how do you think I feel ! I am so very very delighted .... My claims to fame in tennis are so very humble beside these results.

http://www.daviscup.com/en/players/player/profile.aspx?playerid=10004060
He played right handed, he played in two Davis Cup ties (in 1930), won all four of his singles matches, did not play in the doubles, all matches were on Grass.
First round was in Switzerland early May 1930
Second round was in Ireland mid May 1930
At a guess, I feel the Aussies would have stayed in Europe for that Summer, perhaps Rome, then Paris and then London !
Cheers, JM

My OH cannot believe what I have just discovered I think this will be the topic of conversation at the golf club for a wee while
what an amazing family tree this is turning out to be between maternal ggg grandmother being a sugar plantation owners
daughter in Barbados ending up here in Scotland in 1841 , mill owners in Victoria, tennis players in Queensland and I have still
to research Edgar's grandfather William Martin Gibson who I believe had a street or an area named after him and the rest of the
family in Queensland. Wonder what will turn up next.
I'm like the cat who got the cream ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well, when you have sorted everything out, you could get onto that Wiki site that Sandra linked for you and edit and add to it ! ;D
-
I certainly will got a lot more to do yet on the Queensland side of this family I haven't much on the Moons as yet it is
the Gibsons side I am researching . Now I really want to find out more about him where he is buried etc. and if there will be a
a death notice etc.

Back down to earth again after yesterdays great discovery now on with finding out more about Edgar and his family.
Brother Clinton Beresford until 1954 is staying with his parents and works in sports depot.
Sister Helena Stuart Sarah is with parents until 1937 did she marry after this date ?
Sister Violet Agnes Enid married Henry William Charles Hubert Hunt in 1929 and in 1954 they are living in Lilley Nundah where Henry is a bank officer.
After searching trove yesterday and most of last night I finally found a marriage for Edgar . On Wednesday 17 June 1942
Methodist Church Woolwia to Ina Jones her parents were former Mayor and Lady Mayoress Mr and Mrs A.J. Jones of Ban Ban
Ealle Junction.
Now I am trying to find where Edgar and his parents are buried and what happened to his siblings.

I have searched hi and low for an obituary or death notice for Edgar , his parents and siblings anyone any idea how
I can access these.
Thanks,
Suzilad
-
Hi there,
I think that photo is fantastic .... that's the Davis Cup blazers they are wearing !
But the obit .... have you contacted either Tennis Australia or Tennis Queensland .... I think he should be a candidate for the Tennis Hall of Fame ....
Tennis player, Tennis promoter, most likely a tennis coach too .... could have been on various boards of management for tennis clubs, tennis associations, tennis centres, perhaps on the board of Tennis Qld, or even a delegate to Tennis Australia (Lawn Tennis Association of Australia as it was then known), or to the ITF (International Tennis Federation) .... or perhaps he, like many others in the post WWII era were "not exactly welcome" in the Amateur v Professional debates .... However, I do think there would be someone in either Tennis Australia or Tennis Queensland who would know of or could look up their honour boards in their corridors etc and realise that he was a significant person in Australian tennis history. They should also know who is their local historian (perhaps a volunteer) and know of clues to find his obit. You have the date, so that's a big help.
Cheers, JM

Hi majm,
Thank you for this link I have emailed a couple of places asking for their help hopefully they will be able to or maybe point me in the right direction.
I shall keep you posted .
I found out yesterday while trawling that he had a street named after him in 1979.
All these pieces of information certainly make my OH's tree very interesting reading.
Waiting on "Gar"'s grandfathers death cert. he was born in Scotland in 1832 and left c 1850 ende up in Queensland
another branch of the Gibson line.
Regards,
Suzilad
