Title: 1911 Transcription - Purbeck
Post by: Paul Caswell on Saturday 16 July 11 00:14 BST (UK)
All,

This looks like a transcription of the 1911 for the Corfe area.

Isn't that absolutely brilliant? Even for someone who is an "incomer" to Dorset with limited connections to Purbeck, there are so many recognisable surnames still around today. There really were a lot of "your" Stockleys!
Despite working 2 days a week in Wareham, I hadn't come across the site before, and it seems that only Corfe Castle censuses are transcribed. I was interested to see that the two main Estate houses, Rempstone and Encombe (which is defined as a Mansion with 85 rooms) were only occupied by servants. Perhaps they had absentee owners in 1911.

It still astonishes me how many Stockleys there are and have been. I count over 500 in my tree. It all started quite suddenly in about 1680 when a George and Mary Stockley started having children in the Corfe Castle area. By the 1790 census there were dozens and there have been a consistently large population of Stockleys there ever since.

There is one small tree in the middle of it all consisting of about 10 Sockleys that are not related to me in one way or another. The rest are related through my Gt Gran Susannah Holland Bradford Stockley and three of her aunts on her mother's side (the Bradfords).

There also seems to be transcriptions for the other censuses there.  :o
