Title: Post-Witham, Lincolnshire
Post by: smudwhisk on Saturday 16 July 11 12:28 BST (UK)
Does anyone know specifically where Post Witham is/was please? ???

A quick google suggests it's somewhere in the vicinity of Grantham but it would be useful to have a more accurate location as I want to have a look to see if there are any children to a couple who married in Great Casterton, Rutland in 1736 but the groom was "of Post-Witham".  There doesn't appear to be any children to them in the parishes in Rutland around Great Casterton so, I'm assuming they may have gone into that area of Lincolnshire.

There is a small area of Boston, Lincs with Witham references.
Could this be a possibility?

There is a Post Lane and an Old Post Lane in North Witham near Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Hello Nicola

An advanced search on the Lincs to the Past website http://www.lincstothepast.com/ seems to suggest that in the 18th century South Witham was also called POST WITHAM

Parish Records for the period you indicated are on the above mentioned website but are difficult to read, is there any name in particular you are researching? if you post the details on here perhaps SKS will be willing to look for you.

Hi Alan

Thanks, that would tend to tie in with what I've found via google - http://www.hrionline.ac.uk/strype/TransformServlet?page=book5_402 suggests it's between Grantham and Boston.

My intention was to look on linktothepast.com when I could establish a location for the place.  I'll have a look and see what I can find in the South Witham area, I've come across some of the more difficult registers to read on that site already. ;D

Don't forget Witham on the Hill near Bourne. There is also a part of Boston known as Witham Town.

It definately looks like Post Witham and South Witham are the same place as I found the family I was looking for in there. ;D  Sadly they don't look like mine though. ::)  Back to the hunt.

Hi Nicola

I was doing some research on a family that may (or may not) be related to me from the mid 18th century into the 19th century and found one of them claiming to have been born in Post Witham in the 1851 census. When I Googled the name, which I couldn't find on modern maps, I was led to this 4 year old exchange initiated by you. Post Witham and South Witham may indeed have been the same place but the link you gave to the stage coach stops may perhaps point to a more specific part of the area, most likely on the nearby A1 which would have been the main coach route through the area. On old maps it is clear that there was an inn at the junction of what is now Broadgate Rd and the A1. It has long since disappeared under the modern junction that now exists.

In your question you talk about the family you are interested in being from the Rutland area and you mention dates in the early 1700s. The family I'm interested in was originally from Hambleton, Rutland, not that far from South Witham and the 1851 census placed them in Knossington, Leics.

There's no particular reason to suspect that we have the same interest except for your reference to Post Witham, so I just thought that I'd mention the above in case it rings bells.

Hi Tony

I have to admit I can't actually remember which marriage I was interested in with the link to Post Witham and even looking at the LRFHS transcripts for Great Casterton I have hasn't helped. ::)  As far as I know, I've no sidelines appearing in Knossington, Leicestershire, but that doesn't mean there aren't any.  The only link to Hambleton I can find in my research is the marriage of an Elizabeth Dobney from Great Casterton and John Needham in 1769.  Elizabeth Dobney's grandmother was an Elizabeth Stafford and its the Stafford family from Great Casterton and Pickworth that I've been researching, along with a connection to the surname Abel(l) which has been causing issues.  Its possible the Post-Witham connection I found could have been someone with either the Stafford or Abel(l) surnames but as I discounted it in 2011, I've no recollection anywhere of which marriage it was unfortunately.

Thanks for your speedy reply Nicola. Not the same families sadly, but it was worth asking.

All the best
