Quite interesting reading about your William Skelton.
Skelton was married to Miss Vaitleain Vann Dec. 2, 1879, when he was 30, she 15. They first homesteaded two miles east of Stanford in 1880 and were the first settlers on Wolf creek. They made their home in the Judith basin, where he was engaged long years in the ranching and livestock business.Among the early friends of Mr.and Mrs. Skelton were Father De-Smet, the pioneer priest, and Charles M. Russell. At his first meeting with Russell, Skelton had often told how the cowboy artist had asked him:
"What are you doing?"" I am trying to plow my first furrow," Skelton replied. From that remark came the inspiration for the name of one of Russell's famous paintings, The First Furrow"
Skelton was one of the oldest members of the Montana Cowboy association.

A Charles Russsell signed print "The First Furrow" The Wild West is being sold on e-bay at the moment for a small sum.

Interestingly a painting called In Without Knocking by the same artist supposedly depicts The Skelton Brothers.

Not having any luck uncovering the marriage details for the children yet but to continue.
Joseph Van Skelton born 5 Aug 1887 on his WW1 draft is married and says he is a farmer for himself in Geyser. Montana. Having trouble finding anything else on him but suspect he is Van J on the 1910 census and with Sofice (his wife on the 1930 one)

Carl Milton Skelton born 1900 was with the family in 1900 and 1910 and in 1920 (under Kore M) Think the M is for MIlton.

Another snippet:-  The first settler in Stanford, William Skelton, also opened the first school in the Judith Basin in 1887, in order to educate his many children. Residents later picked up stones from the streets to build the first brick schoolhouse in 1912

3 sisters - daughters of William - all mentioned in obituaries for Stanford Skelton and William Skelton

Martha always referred to as Martha Coughlin -  married Louis Coughlin.
Nina must be married to a Hogan. (In the obit for father William - that is Mrs James Hogan of Chicargo and in Standford obit Nina Hogan of Helena)
Lee - Lena ? In father Williams obit married to a William Sweeney of Helena and in  Standfords Obit is Mrs Lee Sweeney.

Have'nt found Nina or Lena yet.

With reference to John Louis Skelton - just a few more snippets.
His funeral service was held in St Anns Cathedral in 1962 . Burial was in the family plot at Highland Cemetery. Perhaps you may find a photograph somewhere.
He drove stage coaches between Stanford and Great Falls before the arrival of trains.
The family homestead in 1880 was 2 miles east of the present town of Stanford - parents the first settlers of Wolf Creek. William Skelton was the first settler in that part of the country and his wife was the only woman resident for many miles. William Skelton had been a hunter, trapper, and prospector in the Montana Territory prior to his marriage.

He had 6 grand-children and  3 great- grand-children.

Carl Milton Skelton in Time Magazine 1929 - article on The American Wild Horse.

I929, Time Magazine
…Yet the catching of wild horses undeniably is a U. S. industry, and many a wild horse, caught, corralled, transported and slaughter-housed, is packed into cans and sold as foodstuff. Most famed Wild-Horse-Catcher is one Carl Skelton, who last week was conducting a great wild horse round-up along the Missouri River in Cascade County, Montana. With his five helpers, he has already this season rounded up more than 350 horses, many of which will end their days at the Hanson Packing Co., Butte. Mont., horse-cannery. For the wild horse concession, Catcher Skelton has put up a $2,500 bond.

Wild Horse Round-Up Starts in Montana; Carl Skelton, the "Boss" of the Old-Time Range Riders, Says They Will Capture 5,000
1929, New York Times
Great Falls, Montana  May 26 - The cry of "wild horses" came down across the open range and away the riders raced, out across the breaks in the range, a stretch of bad lands, beyond which the rovers had been sighted. One of the greatest round-ups of wild horses ever staged on the western ranges was under way

Perhaps I am repeating some parts but some odd snippets you may not have or know.

Things certainly weren't easy for the early pioneers who settled in the West. Winters were cold in drafty cabins;
transportation was limited to horses or walking. Indians still inhabited some areas; and money was often scarce.
The early settlers had to have a great deal of determination. And such was the case of William Skelton.

Skelton was born in England in 1850 and immigrated to the United States when he was 16 years old. He soon decided to head west and eventually ended up in Montana with the dream of "striking it rich.
In addition to mining, he trapped wolves in many areas including Snowy Mountains, the Arrow Creek breaks and
the Little Belt Mountain.

Mr. Skelton moved to Judith Basin County in the late 1870's. He settled on Wolf Creek where the
headquarters of a grandson are presently located. In 1879, he married Vaitlain Vann, and they raised 11 children.

When Skelton first arrived, the Homestead Act had not been enforced. Land was acquired by preemption, which
simply required shaping and placing logs, which were to serve as a foundation for a settler's home. Like many
others Mr. Skelton acquired additional land by constructing log cabins on other sites. It is estimated that with
each preemption, the settler would acquire about 40 to 60 acres. Through preemption and purchases.William Skelton built up a sizeable ranch.

William Skelton raised cattle and horses; but also had sheep at one time. Much of the Judith Basin was open range then, with fences few and far between. Large herds of cattle were run on the open range. Much of the meat was sold to area miners, loggers and other homesteaders. Large roundups were held and the cattle were driven to shipping points. " In the early years, Culbertson, MT was considered to be a cow capital because it was the end of the railroad line. Cattle from this area were sometimes driven to Culberton, where they were shipped on the railroad."

Ranching was not a lucrative business in those days; and William Skelton relied on other means to put bread on
the table. He continued to work at several mines, and trapped wolves.

William Skelton was the subject of Charlie Russell painting "The First Furrow", which pictured him farming on the
ranch where the last Judith Basin roundup corrals were located, just south of Stanford. William Skelton received
the original painting. But when he children got "The Fever" he had no way to pay the doctor; and traded the
painting for the doctor bill. Three of Skelton's children died from the illness.

Several of Skelton's sons are portrayed in another Russell painting. "In Without Knocking" This painting shows
several Wild West cowboys riding their horses into a bar.

William Skelton's home also served as mail distributing point in the early days. "Mail was delivered to the ranch before they had the Post Office in Stanford."  They would lay the mail on the kitchen table, and his
wife would sort it. She even read letters for a few of those who were unable to read."

Stanford Bay Skelton spent several years in Hollywood as a cowboy stuntman. Stanford Bay eventually returned to take over William Skelton's ranch.

William Skelton died in 1943, but many signs of his presence still remain on the ranch.
Several of the century-old buildings constructed by William Skelton, including his original log house, which
served as a delivery point for mail, are still standing.

Managed to find the marriage for Peter A Skelton and Ida Bechard.
Peter A. Skelton & Ida Bechard Marriage
Nov. 2nd, 1915

Last Saturday afternoon in Lewistown Peter A. Skelton and Ida Bechard were united in marriage
and returned to Stanford the following day completely surprising his friends of this community. A
large crowd of the young people gathered Sunday evening, went to the James Hogan residence (Probably Nina's husband ?)
and proceeded to give the newly married couple a lively charivari, but they eluded them and
managed to escape until Monday noon when they were met at the train on their way to Great Falls.

Also a possible death date for Peter of 28/7/1961
Ida was born 1897 Canada.
It is there daughter Lynettte I referred to as buried in the plot owned by his sister Martha in New Highland Cemetery

Stanford Walter Skelton - the son of Van Joseph - Sophie Agnes
Alaskan Plane Collision Kills Former Area Resident, Son

Four Anchorage, Alaska men died March 16, 1968 in a mid-air collision between two light planes above Kalgin Island in Cook Inlet, about 100 miles SW of Anchorage.
Two victims of the air disaster have been identified as Stanford W. Skelton, 49, 4824 E. 20th Ave.,Anchorage, an outfitter and guide, and his son, Richard V. Skelton, 27, 4225 Spenard Rd., Anchorage.
The Skeltons had at first planned to fly in search for Mason LaLelle and two other Palmer fliers, missing since Feb 27, but apparently changed their plans and flew to the Kenai region for clams. Kalgin  Island near Polly Creek, a popular clam digging area, is heavily frequented by air traffic when tidal and weather conditions make clamming possible. There were reports form the accident scene that one of the planes was taking off, the other attempting to land, when the collision occurred.

Richard V. Skelton was born Aug. 25, 1940 in Great Falls. Will PM wife plus family

Sandford Skelton was born July 7, 1918, in Stanford, MT. Will PM his wife's details

His mother and twin brother and sister, Donald and Donna, flew to Anchorage on Sunday to attend the military funeral held Tuesday after noon. Both men were veterans.

I was quite surprised last night to find 4 other brothers of William - I had mean't to check earlier but never got round to doing it and you had never mentioned any other family connections in the USA. So quite possibly you already had much of the information I was posting ? Not sure now what you have on the other brothers but I will put the notes on for you that I made last night - seems a shame to waste the info. Mostly the children of Robert. You would need to work the relationships of all these relatives to try and make a later contact. Many of the names follow patterns, so its trying to work out who belongs to who.

Effie married Louis Sequin about 1903 and had a son Son Robert S 1905 Montana.

Looks like a marriage at Carlisle to a Betsy (Elizabeth) Henderson in March 1882.  But the only birth I find for Matthew (Skelton) in England is Matthew Henderson at Longtown in March 1881 so wonder if this was a child Elizabeth already had. They don't seem to have any other children after this.

The Martha & Mary on the passenger list do fit. They seem to be a well travelled family for the decade they were living in.
Have had a bit of a mystery with Robert Skelton which I have not got to the bottom of. His age seems to vary a lot. Delved into my records & found some information sent me by a friend a while ago.
Marriage. Residence Mariposa age 32 (age out by 10yrs) Father Henry, mother Martha. Spouse Mary Pound 38 b Cornwall. Father John Youlton, mother Mary Youlton. married 22 Nov. 1860 Columbus, Ontario. Looks like Mary had been married before.
If J.H.Skeltons mother was Ruth she was either pregnant when she went to America in Oct. 1864 or became pregnant very soon after arrival. If the above marriage is correct it makes Mary b1822 so in 1870 would have been 48 & not 18.

I have had another look and Robert's dates are 1839/40/42 not to far out.

The J H Skelton on the 1870 census is John - here they are on the 1880 Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa
Robert Skelton 38 Butcher
Mary Skelton 26 Keeping House
John Skelton 16 Stable Boy. Born New York
Effie Skelton 6 Iowa
William Skelton 3 Iowa
Ruth Skelton 1 Iowa

Chambers. Elizabeth (Betsey) and Matthew I have'nt found on passenger list after 1881 - yet. Have a feeling Chambers went back and forward more than the other brothers at that time but only have him with the others 22 May 1876.
Father Henry Skelton I have found on the same passenger list as Ruth 26 Oct 1864. Louisiana.
His age is totally out on that - says age 64 years but the 2 of them travelling together would suggest it was him.

Thanks for the two lots of information. Have not managed to get everyone on my tree yet.  Decided to work on one page as a time so I do not mix up the various families.  Did find that Henry & John returned home as I found them on the English census living in Cumberland.  Have been working on finding a partner for their sister Martha. Twice given the wrong information.  Today I have sent a letter to someone I believe may be a descendent of William's or one of his siblings. Will let you know if I get a reply.

Martha seems to mary John Pattinson Wills - June 1868 - 10b 751. Unfortunately John died in 1873.

Yes I do have this penciled in but no real proof. Daughters Maria Pattinson 1871 & Mary Elizabeth 1873.  Was given another name which made it look like she was married twice. However it tuned out that this Matha's father was called William so that ruled her out of the equation.

Not quite sure who you mean't was given another name. Going by the 1891 census it seems to show Martha & her girls with Jeremiah Skelton.  ??? The 1881 census shows John Skelton with Martha & the girls.  ???

Title: Re: Skelton Family
Post by: woodlea on Thursday 28 January 10 11:09 GMT (UK)
Was given the name of  John Gate who married Martha Skelton 1851. Even quoted her correct date & place of birth. Found this marriage on F..... Search & Martha's father was said to be William. Just shows how easy it is to get into another family. Although I think there may be a link as 1861 census gives John  Gate living with his children & an Elizabeth Chambers. (Chambers being Martha's mothers maiden name)
Title: Re: Skelton Family
Post by: *Sandra* on Thursday 28 January 10 11:45 GMT (UK)
But your Martha was with her parents in 1851 and 1861, with brother John in 1881 and Jeremiah in 1891.
This person is saying that Martha married John Gate just before her 15th birthday on 18 March 1851 at Wigton.
The 1851 census was taken on Sunday/Monday night of 30/31 st March 1851.
So how could she be with her parents, brothers and sisters as well, under the name Martha Skelton.
John Gate was a widow in 1861, his wife died in 1857.
I can see the source from where you were given this information.
I totally agree it is easy for people to get into the wrong families.  ???

Hello Woodlea.

Hope your research has gone well.  Just found another little snippet which may help you.

John Louis Skelton 1889 and Sadie Huff had a son John D Skelton who married a Clara J in 1962 Montana.  I now believe they divorced and he remarried in 1974. (The new wife was also a divorcee)  This is the link with the details:-

The marriage of John Henry Skelton (son of Robert) to Etta Morgan (Think they later divorced if I remember rightly. (First Link) The parents are listed as Levi Weaver and Lydia Miller which is interesting because they are also the parents of Dora W Young (also divorced) who married Matthew Henderson Skelton the son of Chambers Skelton. Hello Eileen,

Have sent you the details of the daughter of William Skelton & Doris Perry by pm.

William and Vaitlain also had a son Carl Milton Skelton 14 Aug 1899 who married Grace Hosner (they seem to have divorced) and then Jane C Lloyd.
I know of at least one son, the details of which I will now also send by pm.

This is a marriage for Carl Milton Skelton to a Grace K Hosner in 1924

Also the marriage of a daughter of Carl Milton Skelton and Jane C lloyd which I will also send by pm.

We also knew that Chambers Skelton married to Elizabeth Henderson was widowed by the 1910 Census.  This looks like a marriage record for him to Sarah Dutcher in 1925. States he was widowed and she was divorced.

Peter Allen Skelton was married to Ida Bechard 30 Oct 1915.  They had Lynette 1916 - 1923.
It would seem Peter and Ida divorced because this is a marrriage record of Peter Allen Skelton to to Mary A Casey (possibly also known as Nellie) in 1927

But I do have tons of info on them somewhere. I have tons of pictures and such. I have a ZIP disk with all my original work from before 1997. I will have to see what I can find for you. I have massive amounts of info.

Hello Alatexan68

Welcome to Rootschat

Eileen will be absolutely delighted to make contact with you.  I think we did manage to find Roy/Ray Frisk and family in reply 41 and an obituary for him, naming his sons and daughters which I passed to Woodlea/Eileen.  How lovely that Eileen might see some photographs to put a face to a name after all this time.

Once you have made another post, you will be able to use the personal messaging system to contact Eileen or Woodlea.  You would do this by clicking on Woodlea in the side margin which takes you to another screen, where you will be given an option to "send this rootschatter" a personal message, you can then "speak" privately, rather than on here.

With very best wishes & warmest regards to you both.  ;D

That was the beginning of my research into the family. When I found that grave stone in Anchorage. It took me months on end to type up all the stones there, many years ago. It is good to see pictures up now.

I started asking questions on how one of the older Skeltons got to Anchorage, when I had thought the only family there was my sons.

Have since looked at your web site & it really does make a difference to put a face to a name. My dad is (*), great grandson of William Skelton born in Cumberland. Dad received an email and letter, but didn't respond because he wasn't sure who it was or if it was legit. So, what else can we tell you? Are you coming to the united states? My father has a ranch in white sulphur springs, not far from Standford where William Skelton pioneered. My Aunt (*) lives in white sulphur and their youngest sister passed away last year. We are a very close family and have a reunion every year on Labor day at the White sulphur rodeo. Most of the family live in montana, but I live in Lake Tahoe, on the border of California and Nevada. Are you on Facebook? I am leaving for the day but will check back later this evening.

This is all so fascinating & exciting for my sister, Mary,  & I.  Joseph Skelton, brother of William, was our great-grandfather, married to Jane Ann Haug (Hogg) Harrington.  Our grandmother, Jane Skelton Harrington was his daughter (married to John Harrington).  We have been doing research through Ancestry.com & were thrilled to get this information.  It's one to find the relationships & statistics, but to hear the stories of who they really were is exactly what we've been longing to find.   Thanks so much.  My grandmother, Jane Skelton Harrington, passed away in 1969 and my dad, Jack Harrington died in 1998.  He would have been thrilled to hear of all of these amazing adventures.   We do  have a Skelton wedding picture as well as a picture of Joseph, Jane Ann, Jeremiah Skelton & Robert Skelton.  Bobbie (Jane)Harrington Henry

Hi Sandra,  I am not related to the Skelton family, but in the late 1950's while in the Army stationed in Alaska near Anchorage my wife worked and became good friends with Karen Skelton, her husband was a Marine.  Upon my discharge from the service back in 1961 (summer) we went to visit Richard (Corky) and Karen in California and stayed with them.  Richard was stationed at El Torro at the time.  My wife, Judy kept in touch with Karen for a time and Karen told us about Richard and his father's tragic airplane crash.  Anyway I still have movies from our visit to California with Karen and Corky if your interested I can have them converted to DVD for you.

Dear Woodlea and Sandra,
I believe the John Gate and Martha Skelton that you mention are members of my family. My great grandmother being Violet Jane Gate. Her father was William Skelton Gate, I think he was John and Martha's child, all from Wigton. Both John Gate and William Skelton Gate were Wine and Spirits Merchants, with William's wife Jane (nee Sheffield) running a pub called The Codrington in Kensington Park Road, London. I'm eager to trace any information on Violet's second husband George Herbert Batley, my great grandfather. They married in Kensington in 1905 and moved to Leicester in 1906 where my grandfather William Pearson Batley was born in 1906. Any help from the link you have with the Skelton side would be greatly appreciated, ie whoever gave you the info about John and Martha.
Many thanks
